BLACK MONTH DECLARED: UKP CALLS NATIONWIDE RALLIES AFTER 'CONSTITUTIONAL BETRAYAL'
30 April 5739 | HeliosThe United Kalopia Party (UKP) has today escalated its campaign against what its leadership has labelled as the "greatest assault on Kalopian democracy in history." Party President, Alexandros Nikolaidis, announced a month-long programme of nationwide demonstrations labelling the month of May 5739 as a "Black Month" for the Republic.
Alexandros published a statement on Social Media condemning the January impeachment of the directly elected President Markos Kastrinos and the successive impeachment of his running-mate Vasos Mavridis that is scheduled to happen in May 5739. Alexandros has accused what he termed a "communist-socialist cabal" of overturning the will of millions of Kalopians through parliamentary intrigue instead of democratic competition.
Quote:"These are dark times for the Kalopian democracy. A sitting President, duly elected by the people, has been ousted by a communist-socialist cabal that has been running this country for a long time. The month of May shall be a Black Month for the UKP. The UKP shall hold black rallies across the country. Phalanx and their elite-socialist-maximalist agenda have brought death to our country's democracy."
The statement has rapidly become one of the most widely shared political messages of the year, drawing millions of views and sparking an unprecedented national debate.
Background: A PRESIDENT REMOVED JUST MONTHS AFTER THE PEOPLE'S VERDICT
President Markos Kastrinos and Vice President Vasos Mavridis secured the Presidency in the direct national election of June 5738, campaigning on promises of change, compromise and a more flexible agenda. Yet barely seven months after assuming office, the Parliament voted to impeach him in January 5739 and his successor, ending a few of the shortest presidential terms in Kalopian history. The impeachment was supported by four parliamentary parties Φάλαγγα (Phalanx), Κίνημα Πολιτών (Citizens' Movement), Δημοκρατικό Κόμμα Καλοπίας (Kalopian Democratic Party) and Καλοπική Άνοιξη (Kalopian Spring). Furthermore, outside Parliament, the Kalopian Renewal Movement, despite of not holding any parliamentary representation, also publicly endorsed the removal of the President.
For the UKP leadership, the sequence of events represents not merely a political disagreement but a dangerous constitutional precedent, an opportunism of the largest scale. The UKP's spokesperson has argued that millions of citizens who participated in the direct presidential election effectively saw their votes overridden by political elites inside Parliament.
Bakr Erbaken speaks: "WHEN THEY CANNOT WIN THE PEOPLE, THEY REMOVE THE PEOPLE'S CHOICE"
Speaking to The Conservative Voice, UKP Parliamentary Leader Bakr Erbaken condemned what he labelled as an "institutional and constitutional coup."
Quote:"The presidency belongs to the citizens of Kalopia and not to coalition negotiations inside Parliament. If every directly elected President can simply be removed because governing parties dislike his or her independence, then what shall remain of the people's sovereignty, people's choice?"
Erbaken also accused the governing coalition of prioritising partisan advantages over national political stability. General Secretary Maria Pappas similarly stated yesterday:
Quote:"Every constitution derives its strength and credibility from public trust. The government may possess the votes inside Parliament, but history will ask whether it possessed the consent of the nation to impeach the President."
A MONTH OF BLACK
The UKP has announced that throughout May, its party workers and supporters are encouraged to wear black clothing, display black ribbons and attend peaceful public demonstrations under the slogan: "Black Month for Democracy."
According to party organisers, rallies have been planned across all five provinces. Local UKP branches have been instructed to hold candlelight vigils, constitutional lectures, silent marches and public discussions on democratic accountability. Party officials have explicitly stated that the demonstrations shall remain peaceful and lawful.
Highly placed sources within the UKP explained that black has been chosen not as a symbol of anger, but of mourning.
Party insiders have hinted that the UKP will make way for constitutional reform, stronger protections for directly elected offices, and limitations on the impeachment process.
The future direction of Kalopian politics shall rest on the fate of the Black Month campaign. Whether it becomes merely a protest campaign or the beginning of a broader constitutional movement would be crucial to watch out for.

The Conservative Voice believes that history will judge whether the spirit of democratic legitimacy was preserved in two successive impeachments. A republic cannot endure if the confidence of its citizens in their institutions is allowed to erode.

HELIOS — A blast at a seed oil factory in eastern Helios injured one man early yesterday and caused limited damage.
The device went off shortly before dawn at the refinery, which produces industrial vegetable and seed oils. A night watchman was treated for minor injuries and released the same day; no one else was on site. The damage was confined to a storage tank and the room around it, and the plant expects to be running again within days.
Investigators called the device crude, an improvised charge built from the sort of commercial explosive used in quarrying and demolition, rigged to a simple timer. One official said it pointed to "some technical competence but limited resources," and noted the charge had been set against a tank that was nearly empty, which blunted the blast.
Hours later, a communiqué appeared, sent to reporters and posted on encrypted forums by a previously unknown group calling itself the Delta Brigade (Ταξιαρχία Δέλτα). It named the factory as a deliberate target and called industrial seed oil a tool "by which the parasite economy reproduces biological passivity."
"The regime manufactures compliant bodies before it manufactures compliant opinions, for the softened body is the material substrate of the softened soul. Every litre of industrial oil is a further increment in the manufacture of passivity. We have struck one node of that apparatus."
Much of the statement attacked parliamentary politics as "a mechanism for indefinitely postponing the Dynamic Revolution," insisting history had to be forced rather than awaited.
"The Dynamic Revolution is not a future event awaiting favourable conditions. Those who postpone it until some awaited hour merely reproduce the logic of bourgeois parliamentarianism. The will must be applied to present conditions, as they are, now."
It read the recent turmoil around the Presidency as proof the old order was already dying.
"Observe the parasite in its senescence. It elects a head and devours him, then turns and devours his successor. Two heads of state cast down in a single year, not by the people but by flabby men trading offices among themselves in the dark. This is the convulsion of a body that has begun to consume itself."
The communiqué closed on the body itself.
"Let the idle men of accumulation grow fat upon the oil they sell. We will not eat it, and we will not permit it fed to the nation unopposed. The formed body is the first act of revolution; everything proceeds from it. The barrier does not fall of its own weight. It is thrown down. Faster toward progress. Upward to ascent, or downward into the drift."
It named no individuals and made no demands.
Officials would not estimate the group's size.
Dýnamis, through its Central Directorate issued a statement stating the party "recognises no armed body and no group operating outside its structures and discipline."

Vidalelis withdraws from runoff after leading first round; Reshuffle sees Xhanari take Interior Ministry

26 May 5739 – The runoff of the much anticipated snap presidential election has become a formality for Phalanx candidate and former Minister of National Defence Panteleimon Sarropoulos after the withdrawal of businessman and Citizens' Movement leader Stavros Vidalelis. Despite Vidalelis leading after the first round of voting, the coalition parties announced an agreement to prevent a 'divisive and chaotic' second round contest between Sarropoulos and Vidalelis.
In exchange for Vidalelis's withdrawal, the position of First Minister has been handed to the Interior Minister, Marios Karaliades, while Phalanx party leader Andromahi Moridi claims the Environment Ministry and the position of Second Minister. Karaliades will be acting President until Sarropoulos's investiture. Previosu Environment Minister Zoi Antoniou moves to Science, Technology and Development - while Dragon Xhanari, Vidalelis's running mate, receives a major promotion to the position of Minister of the Interior. A variety of deputy ministers have also been reshuffled within the Citizens' Movement's controlled departments.
Vidalelis received 30.0% of the vote in the first round, above Sarropolous's 19.1%. Still, a mixture of previous and ad hoc coalition expectations and negotiations made the Citizens' Movement's leader step aside after his second attempt at the presidency. Now he has been announced as the new Principal Advisor to the First Minister.
Former President Markos Kastrinos attempted to return to office after his impeachment, but came third with 15.7% of the vote, becoming locked out of the second round. He retained support among his northern, urban base but fell below the broad support of Phalanx and the Siphinan-fuelled power of the Citizens' Movement.
With the government and presidency now aligned, it seems that the opposition parties will have to wait four more years before they will have another shot at the presidency. Other opposition candidacies like the KDP's Karassos and the UKP's Nikolaidas received significant votes but struggled to stand out from one another and prevent an all-government runoff scenario. Meanwhile, the scandal-plagued Dýnamis slumped to 2.6% of the vote, and the Kastrinos-aligned Kalopian Winter and Liberty parties took small but crucial shares of the vote away from the Flexibility party's candidate. If opposition parties had united from the start, it is possible they could have forced another Kastrinos-Vidalelis race, which would undoubtedly be as close as the last one.
With Vidalelis opting for a powerful, but lower profile position in the First Minister's office, while Marios Karaliades and Dragon Xhanari appear to be increasing in influence and power, there is growing suggestion that the Citizens' Movement could look at an internal rearrangement and potentially new leadership, but Vidalelis has yet to announce anything publicly. A poll of members suggests that Xhanari would be the party faithful's choice in any contest.

17 October 5739 – Leader of the Citizens' Movement, two-times presidential candidate and Principal Advisor to the First Minister Stavros Vidalelis has died this morning of a suspected stroke suffered during a meeting with First Minister Marios Karaliades in the latter's office. He was aged 68.
Stavros Vidalelis was born into a poor ethnic Kalopian family in the Wantuni region of southern Kalopia, but moved to Siphina in his twenties. There, he worked as a rancher before his son one day brought back a tiny diamond after he had been digging a well. Vidalelis quickly took out a large loan and purchased the surrounding properties, before selling the mining rights to a major company in exchange for shares and the covering of his debts. By the end of the decade, the Vidalelis family had bought more and more of the company until he completed a majority purchase in 5720. A popular figure in Siphina, which has a crucial mining sector, supporters say he was well-regarded for treating his workers generously and investing in local infrastructure. Critics have long charged that, by purchasing a dozen of the most circulated Siphinan-language newspapers and online news sites, he essentially had a stranglehold of Siphinan public opinion which he manipulated to support his ever-growing aspirations.
Vidalelis founded the Citizens' Movement in 5737, arguing that people in rural areas had been reduced to a status of second-class citizens, especially poor farmers and miners. He promises expansive investment in rural areas and achieved a surprisingly strong result in that year's election. His party subsequently entered a three-party coalition including Phalanx and Kalopian Spring, but he narrowly lost his presidential bid to former President Markos Kastrinos, who was later impeached. His second attempt at the presidency ended after a deal was struck between the governing parties, despite having once more topped the first round of the poll.
The death of their founder and leader will force the Citizens' Movement into its first ever leadership election. Polls prior to Vidalelis's death suggested that the most popular figure among the party members is Minister of the Interior Dragon Xhanari, who was Vidalelis's running mate in this year's presidential election before they withdrew. However, Xhanari may face competition from older figures in the party who also hold major portfolios, such as Finance Minister Marianna Anthou or First Minister Marios Karaliades. Other ambitious figures in the party include Istochniak deputy minister Bakir Hasanbegovic and Dirina Kalaj, the party's co-deputy leader alongside Xhanari. A wildcard candidate would be Vidalelis's eldest son and business partner, Theseus Vidalelis, or even his socialite-turned-influencer youngest daughter Olympia - one of the most followed women in Kalopia online.

23 November 5739 – Dragon Xhanari has been elected as the new leader of the Citizens' Movement following the death of former leader Stavros Vidalelis last month. Xhanari won 64% of the vote, defeating Technology Minister Zoi Antoniou, who received 13% of the vote, and Istochniak Affairs Deputy Minister Bakir Hasanbegovic, who received 23%. Xhanari has announced that Antoniou and Hasanbegovic will serve as his co-deputy leaders
Xhanari becomes the only ethnic Siphinan leader of a major Kalopian political party. Xhanari was co-deputy leader under Stavros Vidalelis before being appointed as Minister of Science, Technology and Development. Upon the Vidalelis-Sarropoulos pact that prevented a run-off presidential election earlier this year, Xhanari was promoted to Interior Minister to take over from Marios Karaliades, who became First Minister.
Karaliades had been expected to run himself for party leader, but ultimately backed out after poor membership polling suggested Xhanari would win regardless. Finance Minister Marianna Anthou immediately declined to run upon the announcement of Vidalelis's death, while other prominent party figures fell in behind Xhanari. Thus, his competition was limited to Zoi Antoniou, who represents the most institutional wing of the party, and Hasanbegovic, who is known to be highly ambitious and has a strong base of support within the Istochniak community.
Popular within the party and well-rated among the general public, many in the political sphere have rated Dragon Xhanari as a rising star for the party. Shortly before his election, a hypothetical poll showed that the Citizens' Movement would win 32.7% of the vote with him as leader, approaching 100 seats and becoming by far the biggest party. Outstanding questions are whether Xhanari would seek to become First Minister under such an arrangement, or pursue a presidential campaign, and whether those options would cause issues for him with incumbents Marios Karaliades and Panteleimon Sarropoulos respectively.
