Opinion: The Dawn of a New Movement

In the city center of Kasaema, Pavel Šindelář stands atop a makeshift stage, adorned by banners bearing slogans of a new movement. The banners read "Boj za Kundrati" -- The Fight for Kundrati. Šindelář is a man of many talents; he graduated with a doctorate in civil engineering just under twenty years ago, utilizing his expertise as a planning and design consultant for various public works projects focused on transportation within and outside Kundrati. A victim of Kundrati's famous brain drain during the Legionary rule, he achieved his greatest personal successes outside of Kundrati but returned to form his own business there, seeking to contribute, hopefully lucratively, to the country's vast and complex process of rebuilding. From the ashes of a war-torn Kundrati, Šindelář Technologies was formed, rising through a mixture of hard work, technical expertise, and astonishing luck into a fairly reputable civil engineering firm, rising to prominence through a set of particularly lucrative government and private contracts over the last decade.
But Šindelář is more than just an engineer or a businessman. He describes himself as a Kundratijan above all else; he had always had political aspirations, but the chaos of the nation presented him with great barriers. He had a family, he feared retribution, and he wondered, why should he risk everything he has to go into the business of politics, one where no one wins. After all, the worst thing for a man whose livelihood depends on government contracts to do is to get into politics outside of the mainstream. That is, until the announcement of the Kundrati Income Doubling Plan. For Šindelář Technologies, it seemed an amazing opportunity to once again be the beneficiary of a vast network of government investment. For the man himself, it was an opportunity to make his political aspirations come true.
In comes Boj za Kundrati. The name is simple: Šindelář presents himself as the candidate who will truly fight for Kundrati. But it's also more than that. To those who idolize him, he's the only fighter in the ring who can fight for Kundrati. Who better, his supporters argue, to lead the country into its greatest period of economic growth than a man who has spent his whole career creating the infrastructure behind plans like the KIDP. Thus, to the dissatisfaction of his company, he went on leave. The following year, he announced a self-funded campaign for the Legislature, but not under either of the traditional two parties. Pavel Šindelář, he announced, would be creating a new political party, one dedicated to the economic interests of the country. Šindelář himself has an unusual set of ideas; a religious man from birth, he holds fiercely socially conservative beliefs, a sign of his upbringing in an era of deep-rooted institutional conservatism. In contrast to his conservatism in certain aspects of life, he is a strong proponent of government interventionism in the economy, advocating for extensive government spending to revitalize a new, business-friendly but state-led Kundrati market.
Naturally, he campaigns heavily in the sphere of his own expertise–infrastructure development. In a country shredded to pieces by years of war, the government must take control of its own natural resources, create opportunities for refining and export, and develop infrastructure. After all, he argues, economic studies show tremendous returns on government investment in infrastructure, especially in countries facing profound poverty and instability.
Today, however, is one of the most important days yet for Šindelář. Boj za Kundrati entered the parliamentary race with a limited slate of candidates, and an unusual lineup at that, ranging from experienced and disaffected local politicians to businessmen and trade workers, much like Pavel Šindelář himself, with little formal political experience. Šindelář has spent too much time in Kundrati to have the unwavering optimism about politics that seems to run rampant throughout his base of supporters. For that reason, the party entered the election with a profoundly pessimistic attitude about their prospects for gaining significant legislative representation.
Nevertheless, as time went on, things began to look up for Šindelář and his party of upstarts. Appealing to a wide tent of blue collar workers seeking change from the seemingly-inveterate Kundratijan political establishment, educated professionals drawn to Šindelář’s own background in the corporate world and desire for economic growth in a new Kundratijan mixed economy, and hawkish conservatives seeing him as a stabilizing force in the shallow murky waters of post-Legionary Kundrati politics. A small group of grassroots organizers, centered out of basements, garages, dingy offices, and street corners dotted across the country, began to grow little by little into a place of reasonable competency.
Now, by no means was Boj za Kundrati a political powerhouse or an organizational machine, nor was it particularly close, but it seemed that the previously-onerous goal of legislative representation was at last beginning to creep over the horizon. In any case, the light at the end of the tunnel was Šindelář himself. Polling showed him holding a razor-thin margin in a newly-vacated legislative seat, and who’s to say that the new party’s leader wouldn’t be able to make an impact in the legislature, even if he must find himself standing alone.
Now, back to Kasaema. It’s October 5682. The election is just over a year away. Šindelář gets up on stage to a modest crowd. He’s mildly disappointed by the turnout, but he muses to himself that one can only ask for so much. He begins to speak; it’s a spiel that his supporters have heard, worded and re-worded, dozens of times before. Dr. Šindelář is not a particularly good or bad speaker, but at least he’s consistent. After all, he could always find a political surrogate to do the speaking for him. In some ways, he’s an exceptional man–he’s had a great career, a great life, and he has a great future on the horizon, but you wouldn’t necessarily think it if you saw him, or heard him, for that matter. But maybe that’s part of what makes him so great.
As the rally draws to an end, the crowd disperses, walking, biking, and driving back to their homes, their jobs, and their lives. Most of them had seen the destruction their country had faced so violently and so destructively. Maybe, many of them would ponder, Šindelář, this businessman turned political upstart, could be the continuation of a nascent trend of economic, social, cultural, and political growth for their country that had lost so much in so little time. Šindelář leaves the stage, the banners still fluttering gently in the breeze, telling a story of a fight for Kundrati that was just beginning.
For Šindelář, the path to the legislature is anything but certain. He had faced political obstacles before, and some of them had been too hard to overcome. Yet, his supporters were starting to see what they felt was a bit of a shift in the paradigm. Next year, if all went well, a new movement, this time with the legislative representation to make a tangible difference, could take root in Kundrati politics.
Whether or not Pavel Šindelář ultimately secures his seat, Boj za Kundrati, the fight for Kundrati, had begun, formed around an engineer from Lirnak.

President of Kundrati makes deal with Valruzia: agriculture and gold top topics

In retrospect, the Kundrati Union and the Valruzian Republic are not that different from each other. Both have fought off dictatorship and have democratic institutions holding fast and strong. Both countries have long histories and are jewels of their continent. Yet while Valruzia has spent time recovering its economy, Kundrati has not.

President of the Kundrati Union Claudius Hadriana met with Valruzian leadership, and a deal was reached after days of negotiating a trade deal that will help the Kundrati economy while bringing benefits to Valruzia. The deal includes large investments in relation to agricultural technology that Valruzia has, alongside investments in gold that Kundrati has begun to focus on recently.

The AgroSo program in Valruzia provides Valruzia with strong food reserves and protection against threats to food production and distribution that may come from international threats outside of Valruzia's control. This includes various programs on land reclamation, major efforts to improve their supply chain, development of a strategic grain reserve, and more. As part of a deal, a team from the Ministry of the Interior, alongside university graduates and undergraduates dedicated to the agricultural and scientific fields, will visit and stay in Valruzia to work with Valruzian farmers, scientists, and AgroSo-related individuals to learn side by side how it works and how it can be implemented in Kundrati proper.

Gold in Kundrati is a recent thing, as for many centuries it was thought that only uranium was in the Kundrati mines. However, with recent rumors and thoughts popping up about potential gold mines, especially in Jildrath and near Celania, nations like Valruzia are starting to get in on the possible Kundrati gold rush. Thus, a Valruzian gold company has agreed to examine potential sites and set up mines and processing facilities, employing and training Kundrati workers on gold production and implementation. This, alongside access to Dundorfian silicon, will be a great boon to the Kundrati and international technology sectors.

Speaking of the Kundrati and international technology sectors, as solar panels have become very popular in Valruzia (and very popular in Etxea during the period of the split country), it seems solar is an easy way to restore power and maintain a steady power source for Kundrati's underdeveloped power network. Thus, a deal has been reached for Valruzian solar panels to be available to Kundrati customers with various discounts, deals, and the like, allowing as many Kundratis as possible to power their homes and businesses with solar power as possible. In fact, as the first shipments started to arrive at ports in the south with solar panels, there were lines of cars and other vehicles (and regular pedestrians) waiting in line to buy solar panels. Solar panels will become, if not a major scene in Kundrati, a big but important fad.

President of Kundrati Claudius Hadriana to meet with Egelian Royal Councillor Mondragon II and Cascabel, then Dundorfian Chancellor Gimbel, as Hadriana explains his political future for the upcoming November election

Kundrati diplomacy has scored a big score as the President of Kundrati Claudius Hadriana, alongside Egelian leadership, has agreed to a state visit in Kundrati. Egelion is known for its humanitarianism and for its large economy and military status around the world, and they were a key ally of the Kundrati Union during the split period with the Romulo Fund and the signing of the treaties at Altea.

So it is no surprise that a democratic Kundrati shall meet with their brothers from Egelion to discuss investments and work on the Kundrati economy. The meeting, which is expected to include Royal Councillor Mondragon II and Royal Councillor Cascabel, is expected to be very informative yet friendly, as the Royal Councillors from Egelion will be taken on a tour of Kundrati to see the underdeveloped economy and infrastructure situation for themselves and to allow them to make the best judgment with everything in context.

The upcoming conference, called the Concordia Summit, is also expected to take place soon. While this visit is unrelated to the Concordia Summit as per the announcements, rumor is that Egelion may be performing this visit to encourage Kundrati to sign on to the Concordia Accords expected to be signed at this summit. The Kundrati Union has firmly denied these rumors, saying that as a member of the Non-Aligned Movement, they do not take sides in the spirit of international cooperation and in the spirit of brotherhood and unity. However, the Foreign Minister of the Kundrati Union, Michael Kenny Vladimiskovich of Kilani-Delic descent, has clarified that Kundrati will be attending the summit on those principles and that the upcoming administration is more than likely to accept these principles of the Concordia Summit.

Kundrati and Dundorf have been best brothers for a long time before the rise of the Kundrati Legion, and this visit is expected to rekindle that relationship. The Dunburg to Kasaema High Speed Railway is also expected to restart restoration works and service shortly as part of this visit. In addition, the visit is hoped to restore infrastructure across borders and encourage Dundorfians to invest in Kundrati in various ways, like technology, education, and infrastructure development. The Kundrati Union has already announced that they will seek a free trade restoration and that they welcome Dundorfian products passing through or ending up in Kundrati land.

In a national television address this evening, the President of the Kundrati Union announced the election date as 25 November of this year. The election is expected to be a three-way race between the big-tent Kundrati People's Party, the centre-left Social Democratic Labour Party, and a new technocratic Boj za Kundrati (Fight for Kundrati). Hadriana explained that he was very proud to be the President of the Kundrati Union however, he wishes to set a precedent that the President must be graceful at the end of their term and that by not running in the next election for this post, he wishes to ensure that a new generation of leadership can take Kundrati further on to a better and brighter future. He wished luck to everyone running in the election and said that he is confident that whoever wins the election will have the experience and ambition needed for such a position as the Presidency.

SDLP and the Kubitchek Campaign; Can the SDLP pull through or stumble again?

With elections in November, the campaign trail has gotten quite exciting it seems. With the SDLP nominating Alaiza Kubitchek in August as nominee for President of the Kundrati Union, she has focused heavily on her "Fourth Way Social Democracy" theory, campaigning on a strong campaign of anti poverty, developmentalism, economic harmony and of course, welfare expansions. While specific policies are worth noting, and will be noted, a key aspect of the Kubitchek Campaign has been a shift towards more pseudo corporatist rhetoric, at least in emphasizing class harmony. It's no secret that Alaiza Kubitchek has been antagonistic to socialism and laissez-faire capitalism and praises the mixed economy system immensely.
Whatever the case, she's campaigned heavily on continuing KIDP, looking to enact Phase 2, drastically expand the KCJC, small enterprise grants to promote trickle up economics, and vocational training programs to be expanded in every province. Alongside this, particularly with her campaigning on economic harmony, she's proposed specific policies such as the creation of a National Development Council, which would be responsible for bringing labour, business and the government to the negotiating table to ensure coordination on wages, infrastructure, development and prosperity.
Furthermore, of course, anti poverty and welfare measures. Welfare is a tricky topic for the SDLP due to the current economic situation. Because of that, most welfare programs are either limited in scale or not possible outright. But, this hasn't deterred Kubitchek, who has campaigned on expanding the Urban Development and Prosperity Program, looking to get a roof over the head of every Kundratijian, child allowance programs, and modernizing healthcare. To finance this however, she's looked to play up the developmentalism aspects, looking to begin projects of creating new resource mines, infrastructure projects, and ensuring that the state will have the money necessary to pay for these programs.
Whether Fourth Way Social Democracy and Alaiza Kubitchek can convince voters this November to pick the SDLP over the KPP is yet to be seen, but anti-incumbancy bias is likely to play a factor in this election and surely, the SDLP can benefit from that. Whatever the case, this will largely be the real test of Fourth Way Social Democracy and whether it can be electable. If it can, then it will need to prove that it actually works. But that's a problem for whoever wins the election.

SDLP prevail in 5683 elections in landslide majority; Alaiza Kubitchek to become President.

On November 8th, millions of Kundratijians cast their votes once again. However, instead of a KPP victory like the last two elections, the Social Democratic Labour Party prevailed. Not just narrowly or slimly but in an overwhelming majority. The country effectively shifted leftwards towards the SDLP, voting in Alaiza Kubitchek as President with 77% of the vote. An almost 27 point increase from last election. In the Legebiltzarra, the SDLP also secured a major victory, going from a coalition partner to a governing majority with about 263 seats, out of 450. The only regions the SDLP stumbled in, was in Etxea, Cildania, and Jildrath, with the former two going to the KPP strongly and the latter going to the newly formed BzK.
For the opposition, particularly the KPP, this has been a rather disappointing defeat, losing both their majority and the presidency, with the KPP plummeting to 159 seats. Boris Kunetsov, had the following statement to say regarding the election.
Quote:We are not happy with the electoral results and we think we can do better in Pilgon and Kasaema. We're happy with the conduct of the election itself and while we would prefer to be in the seat of the President and having a majority in the Legebiltzarra, we are content with these results and are proud to hand over the power of government to the opposition. We are fully committed to the rule of law, to democracy, and to the peaceful transition of power and while we have fought a hard and strong campaign we recognize that we lost today and they simply did better.
Despite holding a supermajority, the SDLP has chosen to form a coalition with the BzK, arguing that a developmentalist coalition will be vital, irregardless of ideology, with the BzK winning 28 seats. Beyond that, the SDLP can celebrate this victory as Kundrati has taken a left wing turn towards the pink tide. With Alaiza Kubitchek set to become President, Kundratijian democracy is becoming more secure as a major peaceful transfer of power is being carried out. But now the real question will be whether Fourth Way Social Democracy can actually work. It's electable, but whether it can govern or not is yet to be seen. But for now, the SDLP can celebrate this victory, both for Kundratijian democracy, and for the SDLP.

Creation of the National Development Council; Continued preparations for an aggressive KIDP Expansion.

One of the most interesting aspects that Kubitchek campaigned on was the creation of a National Development Council. Arguing that it would be vital for economic harmony and ensuring that a mixed economy is not only possible, but capable of thriving, and that it would prevent the worst excesses of both laissez-faire capitalism and socialist economics. As such, the creation of the National Development Council occured.
For starters, what is it? We can't discuss what it does if we don't know what it is. Simply put, it's a tripartite council looking to bring labour, business and the government together to the negotiating table. The goal would be to coordinate wages, infrastructure investments and long term industrial strategies and plans (which would relate to KIDP). It would be non binding, so while the government doesn't need to listen to it, however, the government could listen to it, if deemed so. So how would it work? Well, representatives from labour unions and business enterprise associations will be given a seat at the table, 12 representatives, with the government providing 6 of their own, from key ministries related to the economy. Furthermore, a rotating chairperson, nominated by the President for a one year term, alternating between business and labour nominees.
Three Advisory Boards will be included. The first is the Industrial Strategy Board, which will focus on industrial growth strategies and plans. Whether it be mining, manufacturing in the future or what not, the ISB will ensure that a plan is always available for industrial growth. Next, the Social Prosperity Board, which will focus on bread and butter economics. Wages, working conditions and welfare. No one wants an impoverished society, but neither does anyone want a society held hostage by wildcat strikes. The SPB will ensure that, in pursuit of the Mixed Economy, everyone in Kundrati can thrive. Finally, the Regional Development Board which will focus exclusively on coordinating with provinces across Kundrati to provide development plans. No region can be underdeveloped.
Each year, the National Development Council will set non binding targets for minimum wage adjusts (with flexibility given for provinces and the current economic reality), public infrastructure priorities, incentive zones for domestic and foreign investment, and labour participation rates in newly established industrial zones to combat unemployment. The goal is not to replace capitalism. The goal is neither to abandon the people for the invisible hand of the market. The goal is to ensure a healthy, mixed economy where all of Kundrati benefits. The National Development Council is simply what the Kubitchek Administration believes to be the first step towards that. The NDC will also play a role in KIDP and ensuring that each phase of KIDP is viable, practical and achievable.

Egelian-Jelbic mixed cuisine hits Kundrati shores as so-called "Egelbic" fusion restaurants pop up in Etxea, Celania and Kasaema regions

Kasaema - As Vanukans and Egelians pour into the Kundrati Union as per their economic obligations on reconstructing the country's infrastructure, a strange and new kind of cuisine situation has appeared in Kundrati. Especially in Celania, Etxea and Kasaema where they are headquartering and massing themselves in, the cuisine of Egelion and Vanuku has seen a growth in popularity alongside the famed chocolate hummus and the pintxos of the southern regions of our country.
The trend has appeared to the point where not just separate Egelian or Jelbic restaurants have appeared throughout our country, so have "Egelbic" fusion restaurants. A portmanteau of Egelian and Jelbic, they serve meals from regular Kundrati pintxos and beer to tacos made of lamb from Vanuku. Kasaema - The capital of Kundrati, Kasaema, has always been under the governance of the state of Pilgon for the existence of the Union. This is nothing new; in fact, it was so before the Union existed, yet Kasaema was always in some ways better and richer than their urban counterparts in the state. Thus it was that for a long time advocates have called for the Legebiltzarra, our national parliament, to make Kasaema a seventh state of the Kundrati Union.

States in the Kundrati Union have always stayed at five for various reasons up until sometime during the divided Kundrati period. Though Etxea had often been given autonomy and acted as a province-like county under the de jure control of Jildrath since at least the 5160s, it was only in the current iteration of the Union that Etxea was officially given its own province to run itself. During the War of the Kundrati Secession in the 4700s, Peghonai was given its own autonomy, which was slowly chipped away to the point where it was an equal member of the Kundrati Union by the 5100s. Thus, there is precedent for states being broken off from one another for one reason or another.

As Kasaema is the capital of our country, and as said earlier, as Kasaema has been its own power in terms of the economy and in various other aspects, Kasaema has always been thought of as the leader of Pilgon or a de facto state. Calls for a seventh state of Kasaema, as said before, have popped up time and time again. Yet now there is a tangible chance of the Kundrati Union having Kasaema as its own state within the Union, with the Kundrati People's Party joining the fray and calling for Kasaema to be its own state with representatives in the Legebiltzarra. The Kundrati People's Party leadership has said that there were many benefits to a Kasaema independent of Pilgon in a quote supplied to us:
Quote:Kasaema, being its own state, has many benefits. For example, they are our capital and have a special say in the affairs of our country that other cities do not necessarily have. Being its own province also allows it to focus on its own issues, and it ensures its tax dollars go to Kasaema affairs and infrastructure instead of having them shared with the rest of Pilgon, which is not as developed as Kasaema. This was historically so as well. In addition to all of this, as a province, they can have representation in the Legebiltzarra, which allows Kasaeman voices to have sway in the affairs of our country without relying on voices from further away in Pilgon.-
The radicals within the SDLP, however, differ. In a quote supplied to us by their de facto leader of the SDLP Radical Caucus, Endika Goenaga, they state:

Prioritising one specific place or city is last thing we should do right now. Our south is poor, its cities and towns are ruined, and industries on the brink of death. Our north is suffering as much. Let's face it. Relations between Kundrati and Kalistan have been in the gutter for a very long time. Thanks to the fascistic legacy of the Legion, Kundrati has a rather poor reputation abroad. One of these nations however, that being Kalistan has had it worse. Being the victim of chemical warfare from the Legion, and committing major investments into fighting the Legion, it's no surprise that after the 2nd Kundrati War, most Kalistani simply threw their hands and gave up on Kundrati, writing it off as a fascist hell. With the SDLP in charge however, the Kubitchek Administration has shown great interest in repairing relationships abroad, especially with nations like Kalistan.
As such, the President of the Kundrati Union, Alaiza Kubitchek has flown towards Kaliburg, the capital of Kalistan, looking to restore positive or at the very least, cordial relations and open up the door for potential economic ties. While so far, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is still negotiating an economic deal, Kubitchek will likely focus on simply reinstating positive relations between Kundrati and Kalistan. Should it be successful, then at the very least, that'll be one nation less than disdains Kundrati for its fascist past.
However, many expect the issue of a proper apology to come up, and while the SDLP is quite dovish and would be in full favour of an apology for the war, the coalition isn't. Even with the majority that the SDLP holds, all it would take is the SDLP Radicals or BzK to break off to put a hold on any domestic agenda. Whatever the case, there will be much work to do to restoring relations between Kundrati and Kalistan to pre Legionnaire levels.

Jelbic famous chef Yarmat Zahr tours Kundrati, prepares for a competitive cooking television show for Etxean Public Radio and Television

Hradna Ves - After Jelbic individuals began to enter Kundrati to provide assistance on infrastructure development, among many other things, it seems the Jelbics have made Kundrati a sort of second home. With new Jelbic-Egelian fusion cuisine becoming popular, it seems that this has caught the attention of a famous chef from Vanuku named Yarmat Zahr. Zahr, who is famous for making unique touches of already popular Jelbic foods, has already landed in Kundrati and has begun to tour the country teaching local chefs how to actually cook Jelbic cuisine, alongside showing off true Jelbic food.

We went with Yarmat Zahr as he did a tour of restaurants in the Celanian city of Venora. Zahr rented a small restaurant with a cleaned-up kitchen and brought his staff. He was there for a week as he showed off such famous Jelbic foodstuffs as manti (dumpling soup) and laghman (pulled noodle dish). In fact, while he was preparing a manti for us to taste, a large crowd of individuals wanting to taste the best Jelb food around started to rush the restaurant. Zahr chuckled and kept cooking, and we enjoyed our meal in our car. It was, however, worth the wait as it tasted so good that you would think this was made by Jelbic hands in Jelbic lands. Perhaps that was why the crowd was so eager to try Zahr's food that day. Zahr, citing prior commitments, declined our request for a further interview; however, on HyrNet, we have published several videos on Zahr's cooking and the restaurant.

We asked several individuals who have left Zahr's restaurants about their opinion of the food they had just eaten. Many of them said that while the lines were long (we saw a line stretching five blocks on our visit), the food was absolutely worth the cost and the wait. The more popular foods they tried were food on dastarkhan, sumalak (wheat porridge), and besh barmak (a lamb dish eaten by hand). Zahr mentioned that he was delighted that so many people wanted to try his cuisine and that his food was being treated so positively by people so far from Vanuku.

Zahr plans to end his tour in Kasaema in a few weeks before preparing for a new television show. Zahr said that he plans to cook for the President of Kundrati herself and her entourage, hoping that they could be bitten by the Jelbic culinary bug that has infected the rest of Kundrati.

It is no surprise, thus, that Zahr has announced, alongside Etxean Public Radio and Television (EITP), a new cooking competitive television show on Fridays at 8:00 PM starting in a couple of months. The show plans to have 48 home chefs compete for a 50,000 Kuno grant and the head chef position of a new restaurant that Zahr toured alongside chef training for a few years. The competition will be tournament style with chefs competing for each round at a studio turned into a restaurant, alongside being sent to places throughout Kundrati to cook for crowds, large or small, and in various professions, to try and ensure that the winner will be a versatile chef that doesn't lose quality no matter their kitchen location. The show will be called Lehen zenbakia (Number One), and applications have already opened to sign up for this competition.
