Dialogue begins with trade unions as the MoL announces new labour reforms, the economy begins showing signs of growth: concessions are necessary for eternal prosperity

Kamalata, Vascania. In a major development for workers in Vascania, Prime Minister Vikas has announced the official start of negotiations and talks between the Ministry of Labour and Workers' Welfare and the officially registered trade union within the empire. The news came after parliament, or what remains of it, approved a government-sponsored bill that aims at reforming the current 75 labour laws into 3 law texts that will address the different labour issues gripping Vascania ranging from the widespread popularity of unregulated labour, the catastrophic state of wages, and the growing inequalities between the different sectors of the economy due to Vascania's massive population and the previous neglect done by the previous administrations, the issue of labour has became a critical issue after the success of the health and labour reforms that were launched by the government. The labour negotiations will be spearheaded by the government and the biggest trade union in Vascania being the General Union of Vascanian Trade Unions, also known as the Vascanian Workers' Confederation, which will also include individual talks between the major unions of each work field such as teachers, doctors, engineers, farmers, bankers, and so on and so forth. In addition to the negotiations, the Ministry of Labour vowed to dismantle all forms of oppression against workers by legalizing prostitution and sex work, giving them legal protections, and allowing them to form their own workers' union, the news was met with uproar from rural areas of Vascania who decried a collapse of morals but their protests were quickly silenced when the emperor himself publicly approved of the MoL's decision justifying it as "a necessary step for the Empire to take to achieve eternal prosperity where every Vascanian is free to fullfil all their desires such as the way the heavens intended." Furthermore, the Imperial Bank of Vascania released an economic report showcasing the steady growth of the Vascanian economy by an average of 4% due to the population being pushed out of illiteracy and death rates collapsing as cases of deadly diseases continue to decline, which led to the markets granting more trust to Vascania especially since the creation of the Lavati Special Economic Zone that has seen historic level of growth and economic activity in its history.

Multiparty elections on the horizon, but observers call for transparency
18 September 5689

Rights groups and international observers have called on the Vascanian government to take steps to ensure a free and transparent process after multiparty elections were announced in a breakthrough moment for Vascania's redemocratisation movement.

Vascania has been governed autocratically by the military-business elite, known as the 'Yantra' (machine), since the 5660 coup that saw opposition violently suppress opponents of Prime Minister Vikas Vaikar. Despite a propaganda campaign to present Vaikar's regime as developmentalist, international experts have suggested their purported achievements were exaggerated. Research conducted by Vascanian liberal exiles in Luthori found that the extent of illiteracy, poverty and disease-related problems may have been misrepresented as especially severe so that when accurate figures were released the government appeared to have made significant advances. The information war between dissidents and the government has been a crucial aspect of the post-5660 war-of-words.

Following Vaikar's retirement in 5683 due to poor health, Prime Minister Amitabh Chitanis was appointed. Chitanis was expected to continue the autocratic-developmentalist policies of his predecessor but appeared to reconsider his strategy after the student protest movement of 5685. Though six students were killed across over 50 major protests in Vascania's major cities, Chitanis's subsequent public address in which he promised to consider the students' demands may have prevented further violence. Critics suggest Chitanis's actual motive in acknowledging the protestors' demands was to prevent the powerful Alliance of Vascanian Trade Unions (VTYG) from following through with threatened strike action. The VTYG have been the primary public face of opposition to Vaikar's autocracy and reformed in their present composition after their predecessor, the United Unions of Vascanian Workers, was banned by the Imperial Supreme Court. The VTYG are understood to be assessing options to support candidates in the upcoming elections, focusing on Utsal and Bhaporistan.

Hardliners within the Yantra's electoral vehicle, now rebranded as the 'National Vascanian League' (RVL), have responded angrily to Chitanis's announcement and publicly voted against the measure to loosen electoral rules. To prevent a larger rebellion, Chitanis seemed to roll back certain pledges like reducing the very high fee to register a political party, as well as increasing the number of signatures required for a party to get on the ballot from 10,000 to 50,000.

The high thresholds financially and in terms of signatures, combined with the use of the first-past-the-post electoral system and Yantra-machine domination of the media sphere, has led certain opposition parties to consider boycotting the election if their demands for transparency and safety assurances are not met. Observers are cautioning about political intimidation and violence, which has been a feature of post-coup Vascanian politics. Despite this, at least five opposition groups have already registered their intention to compete for seats. The sole opinion poll conducted since the announcement of elections puts the government on 42% of the vote but suggests a risk of deep vote-splitting between opposition groups.

25 years of promises - how Vascania's democratic dreams faded
10 February 5713

25 years since the announcement of a return to multi-party liberal democracy in Vascania, few people would say they retain much optimism about the direction of their nation. Unemployment is high, voter turnout remains low, and increasingly radical visions of the future are being offered as the population prepares to head to the polls for this year's national election.

Vascania was once a powerful nation, the largest and richest of the 'eastern third' nations that were the last to be decolonised. Its wars of unification sparked centuries of rapid growth in living standards and internationally prestige. Its titanic oil supplies were the fuel of the global economy. It could wage war with international superpowers like Deltaria, and many considered it the regional power of the global south-east alongside Yingdala. All of this has faded, and in its place the country is a shadow of its former self.

Industry persists, but poor infrastructure and a lack of internal stability has led to a massive reduction in international investment or interest in trade. Many former industrial areas have lost their trade union networks to suppression during previous authoritarian regimes, while the plants that once empowered the nation to new economic heights are now rusting at best and more likely dilapidated. All industry provides now is pollution and meagre wages to an angry population. Only a small number of cities along the Rajuttistani coast and Kayal Island remain largely safe and prosperous.

Amid the national depression, the current government is deeply unpopular. Called the 'blue coalition', it is a coalition of the liberal All-Vascanian League and the conservative Vascanian National Party. Their respective support has fell to the point they are likely to run a join list to avoid decimation under Vascania's unforgiving first-past-the-post system. Its opponents come in three major coalitions. The current Prime Minister is Srijan Patvardhan, who came to prominence as a hopeful figure but looks increasingly unsteady and out-of-touch as his term continues.

The first is Vascanian Resurgence, ultranationalist force that views the reversion to liberal democracy as a mistake. It seeks to empower the military and the royal court. Its key policies include a massive national service program and the reconstruction of Vascania's navy and air force through cuts to almost everything else in the national budget - besides subsidies to religious institutions. Aakesh Kunder leads the alliance, a northern figure who has provided a professional, younger sheen to some very old and controversial beliefs.

It is diametrically opposed by the far-left Workers' Front, who oppose militarism and royalism and seek to reindustrialise Vascania under a program of radical wealth transference and co-operative control of the economy. Its supporters have clashed with those of Vascanian Resurgence in several extreme ugly incidents. It is led by the most prominent woman of Vascanian contemporary politics, Indira Mahalanabis, who was arrested and convicted under the previous regime for assaulting a police officer during a protest. She lost sight in one eye as a result of a beating by guards that generated international headlines.

The last major pole of Vascania's reshaped politics is the centre-left New Vascania, who criticise the inefficacy of the blue coalition but also consider the more radical parties to be dangerous and counterproductive. They seek to encourage international investment which spending large amounts of borrowed money on infrastructure development as a form of fiscal expansion. While the current government has attacked their plans as reckless, New Vascania argues that there is too little currency circulating in the Vascanian economy to generate a recovery - and that a bolder budget is needed to return to prosperity. It is led by the charismatic and youthful Zalim Navathe from Rajuttistan, who has used social media to rally younger voters to his cause.

Polls are all over the place, as is common in Vascanian elections, but international observers worry that the far-left and far-right will engage in violence regardless of the result and that turnout will be low. If a more radical party enters governance, Vascania's future trajectory could alter massively, but it is unlikely that either Kunder or Mahalanabis would be accepted as a Prime Minister by at least half of their fellow countrymen.

Far-right tops poll amid poll violence
18 December 5713

In one Vascania's most violent election in its history, a far-right nationalist party - Vascanian Resurgence - has come first in both seats and votes. The political right has a majority if united, but the two main centre-right parties (the liberal All-Vascanian League/AVL and the conservative Vascanian National Party/VNP) have differing opinions on their willingness to cooperate with Resurgence.

With the AVL all but wiped out by the moderate-progressive New Vascania, the numbers are there for a Resurgence-VNP coalition with a majority of just 3 seats. Resurgence leader Aakesh Kunder would be the likely choice for Prime Minister. If confirmed by parliament, Kunder will likely seek to implement a modified version of his electoral pledges - which included mass-rearmament, reindustrialisation, an expanded national service program and a diversion of funds from social services to purchasing equipment for the oil industry.

Violence was the central theme of the election, with far-left and far-right activists fighting outside polling stations. At least 18 people were killed during the campaign, with four of these deaths caused by a member of the far-left Red Tigers group who drove his car into a crowd of Resurgence youth activists. The incident was condemned by the parliamentary left, and the Red Tigers have been condemned as a terrorist organisation by the AVL, VNP, Resurgence and New Vascania.

The tight four-way race saw a level of geographic division that harkened back to the decline of the first Vascanian Empire. Bhaporistan and Utsal, long the bastions of the left, went by overwhelming margins to the socialist Workers' Front, while the deprived rural areas of northern Rajuttistan, northern Khond and Hamal Pradesh swung strongly towards the far-right. In certain inner Bhapor constituencies, the only significant challengers to the Workers' Front were even more radical far-left forces such as the separatist Communist Party of Bhaporistan. The idea of a far-right-led government has already led to massive demonstrations in Bhapor and the Utsari city of Ekasha, before all constituencies have even been ratified.

The vote in Rapa Pile was marked by the clean sweep of pro-independence parties, who achieved less that 50% of the vote in each constituency but had agreed to stand one united candidate against the fractured unionist parties. Many independence supporters do not vote in general election in Rapa Pile in protest.

Expansive national service program secures funding
3 January 5715

Prime Minister Aakesh Kunder has secured funding for his flagship national service program from parliament after a tight vote. Parliament passed the bill by just three votes amid the threat of a backbench rebellion by members of the coalition's more moderate wing.

While the senior coalition partner, the hard-right nationalist Vascanian Resurgence, is fully behind the policy, the centre-right junior coalition partner, the Vascanian National Party, was concerned by the plans to cut other services to fund the ambitious program. Healthcare and education are two areas targeted by cuts, which has led to protestors gathering in several major cities. The leader of Vascania's largest nursing union said that the cuts to healthcare could lead to outbreaks of contagious diseases.

Vascania's sluggish economy and low levels of foreign investment mean that the government's borrowing costs remain high, as does inflation. The PM said that only by prioritising the new national service program could Vascania escape 'a multi-generational malaise', whereas additional spending without cuts elsewhere would cause an increase in inflation.

PM Kunder's vision for the national service program is that large numbers of young, unemployed Vascanian men would be given a low wage to rebuild the country's military and infrastructural capacity, and then would later be promised indeterminate payments of a 'security dividend' once the Empire's capacity was 'restored'. Critics say these promises are vague and that the plan is overly simplistic for a giant country with complex social and economic problems, but social media videos promoting national service have already been commissioned by the Vascanian Resurgence party to a mixed response from Vascania's young male population.
