Discord RP - Doc - 25-03-2025

Edit:  This proposal has been withdrawn by the author since several of the resposnses went to motivation for what I wrote.

RE: Discord RP - Dredd - 25-03-2025

I agree and believe RP discussions should also be permitted in the discords as well for brevity sake and ease of access

RE: Discord RP - Augustus - 25-03-2025

I understand were both "sides" stand on this. It is reasonable to say that I think as long as the discord RP meeting finds its way to the forum, whether it is through posting the whole conversation like i've done (https://forum.prtcy.com/thread-416-post-6268.html#pid6268), or if actions that come as consequences of what was said during the meeting is revealed/reported on in the newsfeed (or any other forum thread). But I agree that role-play on discord that is not later shown in any form on the forum should be avoided.

RE: Discord RP - Louis - 25-03-2025

First of all,

Let's recognize that the immediate use of RP channels for actual RP purposes was a violation of the current game rules and is not allowed. It should not have happened in the first place and players should accept that it was not right to happen without any sort of approval. Let's not attempt to make this as if it some sort of persecution. It's currently against the rules, end of story.

Now let's go through the pros and cons of this. I'll go through the pros first. The only real pro I see to adding different RPs to the discord is mainly ease of access. Conferences, discussion, and inter-character conversations may be easier from being on discord, mainly because it is easy to access and easy to post. This would of course make ABU's easier to maintain and respond to.

Now for the cons. The first issue comes with recognizing what is on the forums and what is on the discord. Regardless if this new rule is implemented, it still has to be on the forums. This is a forum RP game, not a discord one. The argument is that it is efficient..... Have we even thought about the organization and logistics of such a decision? The discord is eventually going to be overwhelmed by the amount of RPs we add. Even if there is a designated spot for it on the forums, we're just unnecessarily crowing it with RP. It's going to become a mini-forum on the already crowded discord server. We talk about "working around the rules", which I think is perfidious to begin with, yet we fail to identify the past issues we've had before: PT mods are not responsible for what happens in other servers. Of course you could do this in a different server, but if there is power gaming or unfair play--which is not uncommon in this community, there can be no official ruling. You'd be on your own and in your own disagreements--and let's be honest, I don't think this community is capable of reaching agreements concerning RPs (see Kundrati Civil War). Which leads me to my next point, we are going to abandon the forum-based nature of the game (which has worked for decades) and adding a discord element to it. For those who don't know, PT alpha used discord to RP its main world, yet there it is, dead. Besides the incomplete nature of that version, the discord RP is unremarkable and easy to forget. Lost in an abyss of unreadable and unorganized threads.

Pros:
- Ease of Access
- Fun(?)
Cons:
- Accessing previous RPs on Discord
- Logistics (who's uploading to forums and not?)
- Organization of RP on discord
- Recognition of RP (who is going to recognize discord RP?)
- External Discord Server Issues
- Unaligned Community Norms and Previous attempts at similar proposal

Do I think there's a very unique way to get discord involved in RP? Sure, but it is going to be a very regulated and logistically strenuous rule that, quite frankly, we do not have the oversight to make sure it rolls out perfectly. If there is a heavily organized and sophisticated way to make this work, I would love to see it. But for now, the cons severely outweigh the pros in my opinion, and I am not going to support any sort of measure unless there is a guarantee that it will truly improve the game for everyone not just for those who cant handle using a forum.

RE: Discord RP - Kubrick - 25-03-2025

RP on the Discord should be banned and should remain banned. Period.

RE: Discord RP - Drax - 25-03-2025

Think many of us have done it on discord with non military RP and quite successfully too. Where the deal was made.

With military RP think we would need to clearly indicate that is what we are doing and try to suggest tactfully the same thread not also be used simultaneously for someone to tell us how magnificent he or she is and what an abomination someone else is.   Have tried working with designated discord RP planning threads and many get hijacked.

Do think it could be an option but others not directly involved should not be expected to be aware of it til it goes up on the forum which is to say should not really be RP til reaches forum.

My 2c as a player (and one that was once way, way more active in the past compared to the present - so I'm biased in that sense),

Again, strictly as a player:

- I see nothing wrong with allowing bilateral meetings to be simulated on Discord, as long as they are transferred to the forums
- And only bilateral meetings and nothing else
- And as long as it's not expected nor forced upon non-involved players to grasp the entire thing of what happened much less acknowledge it, especially when the transfer to the forums is basically a transcript of non-forum RP

I generally agree with Louis this is a forum-based game but I also agree with the specific inputs from others on directness/efficiency (Doc, Drax, Aud, Augustus). BUT, as long as the latter does not erode the former, the foundation of the game.

As an admin and the guy who's trying to make/maintain us the game these days, I do have to say I really don't appreciate the approach nor attitude about the whole thing.

Especially knowing for more than a year now that both the mod team and me have a hands-off approach with the community.

You guys tried something that you thought didn't hurt anyone and when asked up about it since some of us felt it was skewing the rules, not only did you dance around the topic and debate it, but you've started a feedback thread with an intro saying "either accept it or we'll keep doing it, just not somewhere where you'll be able to do anything about it".

A my way or the highway feedback thread, after the fact.

RE: Discord RP - Zanz - 25-03-2025

I personally prefer if ALL IC is kept off Discord, simply because I think we already struggle as a community to distinguish IC actions from OOC actions and Discord is very susceptible to that problem, specifically.

I also think that allowing IC content to happen on Discord will further contribute to the speeding up of a game that I still think should be slowing down. I am not personally persuaded by the "efficiency" argument. Discord has been and can be used for OOC coordination, and that can be as efficient as you want it to be. Why does the IC part have to happen in real time? When this breaks down today, and players are slower to respond ICly on the forum than others might like them to be, it often quickly goes to what I consider bullying - specific players have often been ridiculed for not posting, and accused of IC motivations for OOC busy-ness. I can only imagine that would get worse if it weren't a once-every-few-days forum post that people want from them, but a once-every-few-minutes Discord RP.

I also don't agree with Luis' statement that it would be easy access. With forum RP (and the lower volume it implies) it's already hard enough to keep up with IC events given the speed of the game clock and just the number of players bouncing around. If I have to also try to keep up with several hundred-post long IC conversations I'm really going to struggle.

Just to clarify, I don't fully think that going to discord would necessarily be more easy to access, I'm more trying to point out the potential pros that are a part of that argument if you will.

I do agree, IC should just stay on forums and that's all.

I want to address something that you've said.

I think that your proposal is a good compromise - that if you want to have a bilateral discussion and have it count as IC that you have the option to have it on the forums (which is more conducive for news updates and diplomacy between multiple parties) or you can do it on Discord via a dedicated forum channel which is only allowed to have those parties in that thread and nobody else (with the explicit exception of Moderation should there be any rules violations for obvious reasons). I also agree that, after these discussions conclude, that the transcript of the meeting should be placed in the appropiate channels on the forums or else it can't be considered for further roleplay opportunities.

I disagree with your third point, and especially about the "...especially when the transfer to the forums is basically a transcript of non-forum RP." What do you mean by this? If you're saying that the roleplay should still not be used for further roleplay between the two parties in that transcript, even when it is moved to the forums, then how should they move from that to an environment where it is considered roleplay? Should they make another ABU post on the particulars of the meeting, for example? I am heavily confused by this statement and would like some clarification.

As for your last point regarding the intentions of some, I do agree that the way the initial post which started this thread off should have been made a bit better. It is in bad faith to ask for feedback but still warn that you're going to move it to another jurisdiction if there isn't any compromise. I'll talk to you privately regarding my other concerns with your statement.

I will say this: this is a forum game, this statement has been repeated many times here. But I will also note that this forum game is an adaptation of a game that was made (possibly) months after I was born. There was no Discord-like software until maybe Skype (which I don't remember having similar features like Discord servers, to my knowledge, though I was too young for Skype) and especially Discord ten years after the foundation of the game. PT Alpha did not die just because of it's Discord-based system, for example. It is ok to start changing things after 20 years, it is the spirit of PT Legacy after all, and it is ok to embrace that change. What I fear is that we may have the habit of old habits dying hard. I'm not saying we should flip everything upside down, and this part of my statement could probably go somewhere else, but it is what I think and I reckon this might be a good place to put it.
