I think decision of the Bundestag was primarily to give the citizens more voice in the government; certainly do not treat it as a referendum on me personally. I was obviously chosen as part of a deal between some political parties.  This will be less likely now; however, historically it was rare for all parties to field a candidate; generally candidates were put forward by coalitions.  But the electorate will have greater influence on the choice.

 
Asked on what he would concentrate for the duration of his term, Prawius indicated
 

My staff and I be reviewing the safety net to insure there are no gaping holes particularly related to health care.  Insurance companies must help the situation; their enrichment can not be the primary goal of health care appropriations.

I spent most of my career working on national security issues but I am confident this area is in good hands so I will concentrate on the safety net.

NDZP Wins the 5686 Federal Election

Dunburg - The Hosian-democratic party NDZP (New Dundorfian Centre Party), led by Federal Chancellor Freda Gimbel, has won the 5686 Federal Election and will be projected to increase its Bundestag representation by at least three seats despite a very small contraction in votes. This result comes as the party ends a four-year term in which they governed with the second largest party, the DSDP (Social-Democrats), in a Grand-Coalition agreement following the deadlock caused by the last election. The Social-democrats lost some some votes and are projected to suffer minor losses in Bundestag but will overall maintain their position as the second largest party, with at least twelwe points of spread compared to the third largest. The conservative ruralist party, KBP (Conservative Federal Party), won the exact same percentage of votes as four years ago and will maintain the position of third largest party, winning this position by just a decimal point over the Liberal-Democrats (TLD), who had a major surge in votes (almost three points) and in their Bundestag representation, two seats less than KBP. Also the Greens (GPP) experienced a growth in votes and seats, and is projected to win 11,5% of the votes. A big disappointment to their left, though: the DRF (Dundorfian Red Front) will lose arond 9-10 seats while the  DSU (Dundorfian Social Union) is the big loser of the night: they lost several supporters, are projected to halve their Bundestag representation and for the first time since they split off the DRF, they obtained less votes than them.

At a first glance the election didn't cause much damage to the governing Grand-Coalition: they maintain roughly the same seats as four years ago and the Chancellor's party is stronger now than when it entered this agreement. Although, when seats estimates are considered it's impossible not to notice that the center-right coalition composed by NDZP, KBP and TLD has gained a majority of the seats in the Bundestag, something that didn't happen since the early 5670s. The question for the Federal Chancellor now is if she prefers to continue this GroKo government, risking to alienate its allies but with the upside of maintaining political stability, or if she is ready to change governing coalition and install a center-right cabinet in this country for the first time since 5670.

The Zeitung's analyst Bernard Engel, who is also a Professor at the University of Dunburg, explained why the center-left parties (DSDP-GPP-DSU) got their lowest vote share in history:

First of all, it's clear that the Green Party has no faults here. It's the only leftist party to increase votes and it likely served as a catalyst for disillusioned DSDP and DSU voters. The DSDP, according to the Zeitung's estimates, has lost 1% of the votes. This is common for parties that enter a Grand Coalition agreement because their voters perceive this move as an excessive moderation of the party's ideas. The NDZP similarly lost some votes, altough their loss was more contained. Then there's the DSU: the party is suffering because of the high Competition it gets from fellow left-wing parties such as GPP, DSDP and DRF too, considered their recent change in leadership. The Social Union failed to distinguish itself from allies and it caused their voters not to turnout or to move to another party. The good news for the Center-left coalition is that the Center-right coalition's success has been entirely propelled by the excellent result of the Team Liberaldemokraten, a centrist party that was able to convince moderate DSDPers and a younger electorate to support it instead of the traditional center-left parties. It's a good news because with some adjustment in leadership and policies, those voters are very winnable and they can be the key for a future Leftist win.

DSDP Leader and Deputy Federal Chancellor Lorena Oberlitz said that her party's result was "mediocre" and that it's entirely up to President Prawius and Chancellor Gimbel to decide what coalition "will serve the Dundorfians' interests better in the next term". The KBP called on its ally, the NDZP, to pursue the "people's will" and to initiate talks for a center-right cabinet in which the KBP will likely reclaim the Deputy Chancellor position, because they would be the second largest party in that coalition. As the parties begin to make their maneuvers for the new Government, it's being rumored that after the passage of the Constitutional Amendment, Ms. Oberlitz is "gearing up" to run for President in February 5690, when Pres. Wolfgang Prawius's second term will expire. According to sources within her inner circle, she believes that by the time of the election, she will have a clear path to win more than 50% of the votes in a runoff despite this year's poor results for the Left, betting that moderate voters who choose TLD and NDZP might return to the DSDP should a Center-Right cabinet be appointed.

Chancellery, December 29, 5686 (backdated): In the wake of the recent elections, President Wolfgang Prawius asked Chancellor Frieda Gimbel of Neue Dundorfische Zentrumspartei (NDZP) to form a governing coalition.
 
Prawius joined Gimbel in praising the work of Deputy Chancellor and Foreign Minister Lorena Oberlitz of Dundorf Sozialdemokratische Partei (DSDP) reestablishing our long time ties with the Kundrati Union as epitomized by the State Visit of Kundrati President Alaiza Kubitchek which Oberlitz arranged.
 
Nonetheless, the norm when the Center Right and Right have a majority is a Center Right  governing coalition just as a Center Left and Left majority normally leads to a Center Left governing coalition.
 
Accordingly, Gimbel has invited Konservative Bundespartei (KBP) and Team Liberaldemokraten (TLD) to join NDZP in a governing coalion, and they have accepted.

Unterschloss, Novemberl 21, 5687:  The Leadership of Demokratische Sozialunion (DSU) including former Foreign Minister Ursula Hoepner and former Defense Minister Otto “Putzi” Haefstaengl invited Leadership of Dundorfische Rote Front (DRF) to the DSU Headquarters in Unterscloss. DRF Leadership accepted and attended  including Party Secretary Gerda Kempf and former Interior Minister Karl-Heinrich Muller.
 
DSU Leader Hoepner indicated purpose of gathering was to propose DSU rejoin DRF since the thinking that prompted the split has not worked out very well in the long run.  DSU believes its participation in several Center Left governments was positive but that on balance the influence of both DRF and DSU have suffered and that their differences can be resolved.
 
DRF Leader Kempf indicated willingness for remerging but wanted to know what special arrangements would be necessary.  Hoepner responded that environmental issues had not been at the forefront of the agenda of either party but that DSU members really wanted to be able to vote their conscience on environmental legislation.
 
Hoepner noted that rather than have a laundry list of ideological demands before entering a governing coalition, DRF currently simply wanted no restraints on how its members voted on proposed legislation.  This position was compatible with DSU thinking and was no longer a reason to be separated.
 
The other item Hoepner brought up was treaties; Hoepner proposed none be rejected in advance but each considered on its merits and then a majority vote determine party posture.
 
Perhaps surprisingly, Kempf responded that she had been authorized by the Central Committee to accept those terms should they be offered.  
 
Accordingly, DSU is disbanding and its Bundestag members are now members of DRF.

Altéa, Egelion - Federal Chancellor Freda Gimbel (NDZP), accompanied by Deputy Chancellor Leonie Hagsburg (KBP) and Foreign Minister Gunther Krancke (TLD), completed a two-day long official visit to the Kingdom of Egelion where officials from both countries discussed and finalized a trade deal. The trio met in Egelion's capital with Andrea Mondragon y Astures, the Egelian Royal Councillor for International Affairs, and Teresa Cascabel, the Councillor for Economics and Trade. Sources from both the Dundorfian and Egelian delegations described the meeting as "cordial" and "very productive"; one source close to Chancellor Gimbel said that the Federal Chancellor "highly enjoyed" the professionalism of the Egelian counterparts.

The trade deal finalized by the two countries is about an exchange of natural resources: Dundorf will export Silver extracted by the Nationales Bergbaukonglomerat (NBK) to Egelion, through the port of Ikradun Island and via air cargo, while our country will import from Egelion Rare Earth Metals, a highly needed resource in sectors such as tech, automotive, defense and also clean energy (like solar panels and most importantly wind turbines). The CEO of Mainbaum-Bain, Gunther Andreas Dahl, Dundorf's top car manifacturer, said: 

We strongly endorse the Federal Government's trade deal. It will allow our sector to dive deeper into the market of electrical vehicles: we already produce EVs, but import prices for REMs is so high that it makes our cars less competitive in an international market. Our hope is to lower prices for Dundorfian EVs and make this sector competitive again for Dundorf after decades of decaying.

This trip represents the center-right cabinet's first major involvement in foreign affairs and international trade, after the successful term of Lorena Oberlitz (DSDP) as Foreign Minister. This week's trip was meant as a signal to the political establishment and the world that the NDZP-led center-right coalition is capable of managing Dundorf's international ties as well as the DSDP-led coalition, which is historically more internationalist, can. Oberlitz, who prior to be the Foreign Minister (and Deputy Chancellor) in the previous cabinet served also as the Federal Chancellor, is planning a comeback by running in next year's direct Presidential election, representing the Social-Democratic Party. Analysts and pundits agree that Internationalism and foreign policy is one of her strongest policy areas, and the center-right coalition's objective seems to "steal" some of the spotlight she currently enjoys on this theme, in order to make the Presidential Election more competitive. One way to do that is to appear united as a coalition at a international meeting and cutting a very favorable deal that could revive a sector that defined Dundorf's economy for centuries.

Oberegg, Dunlake - Dundorf's first ever direct Presidential election after 66 years is set to take place in February next year, but we already know the name of one candidate, a name that has been speculated for months: Lorena Oberltz. The former Chancellor just announced through a video shared on social media her candidacy for the office of Federal President, representing the Social-Democratic Party (DSDP), the party she currently leads as the main opposition party to the NDZP-led center-right cabinet. In the video, shot at her family’s long-standing restaurant in Oberegg, Dunlake, she says her candidacy aims to “give a voice to the voiceless.” She presents herself as an “experienced, world-respected leader” who is also “down to earth, as the daughter of two cooks,” and closes with a final appeal to voters: “I’m ready to offer my experience to this country, hoping to lead all of us into the next century.”

It's clear that she already envisions two terms (aka 10 years) in her future and that she is positioning to be a transition President to the next century. It's interesting that as a former Foreign Minister who helped broker the Kundrati normalization, she puts internationalism as a defining trait. Her team clearly thinks it could be a winning issue.

Presidential candidates need to obtain either 32 signatures from elected members of the Bundestag (5% of the members) or get the signatures of at least 5% the registered voters in each State in order to file their candidacy to the Bundeswahlkommission (BWK - Federal Electoral Commission). Mrs. Oberlitz has obtained 156 signatures from Members of the Bundestag to launch her campaign, meaning that she enjoys the backing of the entire Social-Democratic group in the Bundestag, even from the most "radical" wing of the party led by Mr. Matthias Werner. At the moment there are no other candidates, but every party is expected to find a nominee by the end of the summer. Oberlitz, by jumping in so early, and enjoying high rates of popularity, might be already the favorite to win next year's election.

Meet the Candidates for Federal President of Dundorf

Dunburg - Over the course of the summer, several people announced their bids for President, all following suit to the early announcement made by former Chancellor Lorena Oberlitz in May. The filing deadline to run for President is set to expire today, 30th September, at 23:59; and tomorrow will mark the official start to Dundorf's first Presidential Campaign after 66 years. The Nordenhausen Allgemeine Zeitung is presenting all the candidates running for the office of the President in this article, so that our readers are fully informed about the people running, and can begin to think who they're going to vote in February. The candidates are listed by alphabetical order, in order to not assume preferences or unintended endorsement from the Editorial Board.

The first candidate is Dr. Herman Felder, a NDZP member of the Bundestag who was selected as the Presidential nominee in August. Felder, 55, is the former Minister-President of Oderveld and prior to that he worked as a Professor in Luthorian literature at the University of Dunburg. He is currently serving in the Bundestag after having been elected for the first time in 5686 and is viewed as a rising star in the party, a potential successor to Freda Gimbel, when/if she retires. Felder was chosen in a closed primary election held among NDZP members, and was then endorsed by all the Hosian-Democratic members of the Bundestag. He currently resides in Unterschloss with his wife, Wilhelmina, with whom he had 1 child, now adult. In his free time, Dr. Felder practices fencing. 

The KBP decided to back the candidacy of former long-time Julstoch Minister-President Tobias Gutenberg. Gutenberg, who turns 72 tomorrow, has been a member of the KBP since he was 16 (then still the Julstochian Social Union - JSU) and has witnessed the evolution of his party from a regional force to a national force who today holds the Vice-Chancellorship. He said that it's important to run for Federal President because the Head of State should "always protect the rights of the States and our Federal form of government from the excesses of the central government". Gutenberg lives in Raderath-am-Hof in the family's farm with his wife Cornelia and all of his four adult children and grand-children. He owns a horse and is a passionate chess player.

The Dundorfian Red Front will candidate the party leader, Gerda Kempf. Kempf, 61, announced her candidacy shortly after Oberlitz, in June, and vowed to challenge the former Chancellor on her perceived "extreme moderateness" and pledging to bring a "strong left-wing voice in Karlottenberg". Every member of the DRF group immediately signed her candidacy, allowing her to clear the 32 signatures required from members of the Bundestag in order to launch a bid. Mrs. Kempf lives in Dunburg with her husband, Niklas, and they have three adult children. Mrs. Kempf used to have one pet rabbit, but stated that she wouldn't adopt any new pet if elected to Karlottenberg Schloss.

Foreign Minister Gunther Krancke, of the TLD, will be the fourth candidate Dundorfians will find on their ballot. The TLD, the only party who was strongly opposed to bring back the direct election of the President, chose their Leader to represent them in the Presidential race, without any internal opposition. Krancke has been in politics for the past two decades, holding different cabinet posts and holding for a long time a seat in the Bundestag, representing Oderveld. Krancke, 65, has never married and lives alone with several cats in his Dunburg mansion. He said that his cats would be too stressed to move to Karlottenberg Schloss so he stated "I wasn't that sure of running for an office that would require me to live far away from my cats".

Lorena Oberlitz, the former Chancellor, is the DSDP presidential nominee. The Zeitung already covered her announcement video and the selection method. Mrs. Oberlitz has a rich political history: DSDP Leader since 5674, Chancellor, Deputy Chancellor, Foreign Minister and as of now, de-facto Leader of the Opposition. She has also held a Bundestag seat, representing Chontalen, for almost 25 years. She is 54 and lives in Fuchstal, Chontalen with her husband, Luigi (from Istalia), and 2 young adult children, as well as several cats, like Mr. Krancke. She said all of her cats would follow her to Karlottenberg Schloss, if elected.

Gloria Schumacher is the Green nominee for President, chosen directly by Party Leader Ingrid Niedermeyer. Ms. Schumacher, 38, is a two-term Member of the Bundestag from Dunlake and has been the President of the youth wing of the GPP from 5668 to 5676. More of a backbencher than a rising star, pundits speculate that this choice was made because Mrs. Niedermeyer believes the Green Party doesn't have a path for the Presidency, given the strong candidacy of Mrs. Oberlitz. Schumacher lives in Dunburg with her boyfriend and the couple owns a couple of dogs. Ms. Schumacher and her boyfriend are avid football fans and ssupporters of Dunlake FC, historical rivals to Karlottenberg Dunburg FC, the team originating from the neighborhood where the Presidential residence is in.

Surprise, surprise, an Independent! The only person who could get enough signatures outside of the Bundestag is Mr. Rikkert Van Der Plaas, 41, from Grozvic, who is unaffiliated to any party. His candidacy, he says, is meant primarily to "promote Narik minority interests" and then to "fight political corruption".Van Der Plaas stated to the press that if elected, he would refuse to live in Karlottenberg Schloss and instead said the Federal Government should sell the estate and use the money "to pay off the debt". Mr. Van Der Plaas has previously worked as a carpenter and his only experience close to politics has been when he was elected Class President for one term back in high school. He lives in Sudschloss with his wife and three kids.

Oberlitz and Felder Advance to a 2nd Round of Voting, Zeitung Projects

Dunburg - The country voted yesterday in its first direct presidential election in 66 years, for the 5690-5695 term succeeding President Wolfgang Prawius' term-limited tenure as Federal President. In a strong surge of turnout, Lorena Oberlitz (DSDP) and Dr. Herman Felder (NDZP) were the two top voted candidates for President, but none of them came close to 50% +1 of the votes, which means that Mrs. Oberlitz and Dr. Felder will face a runoff election in two weeks. One big surprise of the night was the strong showing of independent candidate Rikkert Van Der Plaas who, without the backing of any party machine, obtained almost 14% of the votes, arriving third overall. His best performing State was Grozvic (20%), a state heavily populated by the Narik minority, which he claimed to represent in this Presidential election as the sole Narik candidate. He also ran on a strong fiscally conservative and a socially progressive platform, drawing votes from both left and right, and hinting on the campaign trail that he might found a new party, in the near future:

I feel really good about our chances in the election! If we perform well, I will think about it [forming a new party]. I really think Dundorfians need a neither left or right alternative that pledges to represent all people no matter their background, sexuality or beliefs and that wants to have a serious conversation about our bloated budget and fiscal responsibility.

Gerda Kempf, the candidate of hard-left DRF, obtained a good result: she won 11% of the votes and is the fourth-most voted candidate, it is a satisfactory result for her and her party because the merger with the DSU has proven successful and it gave to most leftist flank of the center-left coalition new vitality, also ahead of the November legislative election, when the coalition (DSDP-GPP-DRF) hopes to recapture control of the Kanzleramt, currently controlled by NDZP's Freda Gimbel. The other center-left candidate, Gloria Schumacher (GPP), was the least voted candidate with about 7% of the vote. The Green party launched the candidacy of Ms. Schumacher late in the summer and it was clear that they didn't expect her to win, mostly because of the strong profile of Lorena Oberlitz:

We have a very strong candidate in the center-left, former Chancellor Oberlitz. The Green party knows it will be difficult to win this election, and we decided that our best bet is Gloria. A young rising star that can build a national profile, and energize our base. We're working tirelessly to ensure that the next Federal President is a Progressive. Whether it's Gloria, or Chancellor Lorena Oberlitz.

 

In the center-right, the KBP and the TLD candidates underperformed the support of their parties' baseline, part of the reason is, according to our election experts, is the independent candidacy of Mr. Van Der Plaas. Exit polls show that voters who voted TLD and KBP in 5686 have supported Van Der Plaas more than other voters. Another reason Van Der Plaas got an impressive results is the record number of votes that he got among people who did not vote four years ago in the legislative election. Ms. Schumacher and Mrs. Kempf have both endorsed Lorena Oberlitz for the second round, while Mr. Gutenberg and Mr. Krancke have endorsed Dr. Felder. The independent candidate, Mr. Van Der Plaas, has said to his voters to "vote according to your own conscience".

The second round is set to take place on March 12, and whoever between Lorena Oberlitz and Herman Felder will receive one more vote, will be elected Federal President and will become the newest tenant of Karlottenberg Schloss, succeeding the ten year tenure of President Prawius. Dundorf - The successor of President Wolfgang Prawius has been elected, this time by the people, and her name is Lorena Oberlitz. Mrs. Oberlitz, who launched a campaign for President last May, has served as the Leader of the DSDP (Social Democratic Party) since 5674, is a member of the Bundestag since 5666, has served as Chancellor from 5674 to 5682, Deputy Chancellor from 5682 to 5686 and is the Leader of the Opposition since 5686. Upon her installation in Karlottenberg Schloss, she will have to relinquish her seat in the Bundestag and will step down as Secretary of the DSDP, opening up a succession battle for the new Social-Democratic leader who will have to lead the party into the November Federal election. 

Oberlitz is the first President elected directly from the people after 66 years, when in that period Presidents were elected indirectly by members of the Bundestag. According to the near-completed counting of the votes, the Social-Democrat won with seven point of advantage over his opponent, Dr. Herman Felder of the NDZP, translating into an advantage of roughly six million of votes over him. According to our sources, Dr. Felder called Mrs. Oberlitz to congratulate her early in the night, when the counting of the votes in the conservative stronghold of Oderveld showed a weak performance for the Hosian-Democratic candidate, and it became very apparent that Lorena was headed for a clear victory.

As is customary, President outgoing Prawius will invite the President-elect to Karlottenberg Schloss to discuss their transition over lunch and to give her a tour of the entire estate, in which she should move in after the swearing-in before the Bundestag, on March 30. She has already stated that her entire family (including several cats) will move into the Presidential residence.
