Politics: Stockton aims to draw support for Labour from labour unions in LWU conference.

The National Labour Party has traditionally been the main representative of the Luthorian working class in Darlington Palace. However, faced with a decline in public perception after more than 3 decades of Conservative dominance in government, the Labour Party now stands at a crossroads. Under the leadership of Edward Holian-Keaty, the party aims at reclaiming lost ground among blue collar voters, this is specifically aimed at countering the Tories and the other left-wing political parties (Left, Green parties)' attempts at gaining ground among this category of voters.

Speaking at the 5702 Luthorian Workers' Union national conference, deputy Labour leader, Henry Stockton tried to argue to an unconvinced crowd that the Labour Party was the "best choice" for workers nationally. He argues that Labour's accomplishments while in government are "simply too big to be ignored". Some were receptive to the message, but as an attendee putted it, for many it was "merely another political stunt aimed at receiving our support and do nothing to actually improve the lives of Luthorian workers".

Undettered by this overall negative reception of his speech, Mr. Stockton said to journalists that "Labour will make the working class' lives better, through fairer taxation and increased salaries nationwide".

This move was widely observed as a political strategy by experts, the Labour Party is currently on the backfoot on the leadup to the 5704 general elections, where the Conservatives are expected to be reelected with a higher margin than in 5700. Reasons for this are multiple, foreign policy successes, continued economic growth since the end of the Recession of 5698 are stated as reasons for the Tories' continued popularity among voters.

In the face of these bleak projection, the National Labour Party remains defiant, Labour officials have stated that the party is "currently working on an agenda, for every segment of Luthorian society, not for the few.", an explicit long-time criticism of the Conservative Party's platform, which has been labeled as being "pro-rich".

Inside the Luthorian Workers' Union, the Labour Party is, regardless of the reported reactions of Stockton's speech, viewed in high regard although A LWU executive said about the NLP that "they [the National Labour Party] remains the Luthorian working class' greatest ally, but, there've been grievances from workers that haven't been addressed properly by the former leaderships."

These grievances, have mostly been focused on the state of current-day Luthorian welfare protections. While the welfare state has been maintained by the Conservatives during their successive terms in government, the modern-day Luthorian welfare state isn't comparable to what it has once been, provisions have been tightened, the government exerces more control to avoid potential fraud of the system, besides, numerous critics have argued that the social protection net was becoming "much less effective" as the years pass.

The effectiveness of Mr. Stockton's strategy remains to be seen, while the deputy Labour leader, he isn't an ally of current Labour leader, quite the opposite, having been elected to the position as the flamboyant representative of the Labour Party's hard left-wing current, in opposition to the moderate social democrat leadership currently in place. Nonetheless, the two entertain a tenous peace agreement, focusing instead on combining their efforts in uniting the party and winning back a majority in the Imperial Diet and reclaiming 10 Crown Street, more than 30 years after the last Labour Prime Minister Howe's resignation following electoral defeat.

Following the engagement of a peace process in New Verham, Luthori, which has been one of the paramount powers involved in the regional conflict expressed its "satisfaction" at the "smooth and reasonable" agreement that has been signed under the Egelian government's guidance.

"We (Luthori) are of course rejoiced at observing the final conclusion of the New Verham theater. For two years, the nation has been engulfed into an intense civil conflict in which Luthori played an small, but overall reluctant part in overseeing its end.", said Foreign Secretary Stanley as he was leaving the Foreign Office for Darlington Palace.

When asked about his and the government's opinions on being "snubbed" of the peace negotiations, the foreign minister said that "Luthori wasn't there in a so-called righteous intervention to restore democracy, our intervention was focused solely on the security of Luthorians and foreign nationals abroad and the retaking of our embassy in Chukyo". The foreign secretary moreover added that "Luthori's participation in the peace process might have delayed what was direly needed in New Verham, and that being the swifest restoration of peace in the region".

The Luthorian-led military intervention, codenamed "Operation STERYX" aimed at liberating its embassy in Chukyo in early 5700, which had previously been seized by insurgents was a resounding success for both Luthorian intelligence and military forces, with the embassy being retaken in a swift manner, only taking a few hours for military forces to take complete control over the area.

Luthorian officials welcomed the announcement of the signature of a peace agreement in New Verham, with Luthorian government spokesperson saying that "Luthori now hopes for the quick establishment of rule of law through the enshrinment of constitutional rule" in the wartorn nation. The Department of Foreign Affairs, throughout the Foreign Assistance and Development Organisation released a statement expressing its "openness at exploring ways to ensure that New Verham be supported economically to ensure that the nation be ready to sustain itself economically".

Emperor William will be travelling in four different nations in his first real diplomatic test as the Luthorian monarch. Following his father’s demise four years ago and his mother’s own death at 102 last year, the Emperor of Luthori and his family have been in an extended period of mourning, the Palace having scaled back international engagements for the time being. 

It seems that this period is now over, as the Emperor is undertaking a tour of four Dovani nations, those being New Englia, Bianjie, New Verham and Xsampa. Both of those four nations currently maintain different types of links with the Luthorians, some are more culturally focused, such as New Englia and those more pragmatically driven to commercial ties, such as communist Xsampa. 

Emperor William and Empress Victoria will first begin their tour by visiting New Englia. Currently, in Luthori, there is a large segment of New Englian immigrants forming a non-negligible foreigner group, according to the latest statistics, around 800.000 Luthorians consider themselves to be “New Englian” by descent or birth. This large group unfortunately plays a large role in contributing in low-paying jobs, such as many immigrant communities in Luthori.  

The Luthorian Emperor and Empress will be meeting with state officials at the beginning of the visit, Emperor William will hold a speech focusing around Luthori-New Englia bilateral ties following the infamous “Legion of Dove” intervention in the country’s civil war in the 5630s. This mercenary group, funded by the IFIA, helped the New Englian Federal Gov’t to clear out rebel groups in the country’s civil war in the 5630s.  

While Emperor William’s visit might be well-received by Inglian communities, Kilani communities, still shaped by their opposition to Luthorian colonial rule during this colonial era remain apprehensive of the visit.  

Some argue that the Emperor should “apologise formally” for Luthori’s role in the colonial partition and subjugation of the Dovani continent. The Palace refused to leave an official statement on that matter.  

The Emperor and Empress will then visit the nation of Bianjie, with whom Luthori maintains cordial diplomatic relations, the Emperor’s visit comes following the New Verhamese civil war, during which Bianjie’s agreement to the hosting of Luthorian troops for a limited period proved paramount in the following embassy rescue operation.  

Emperor William and his wife will notoriously meet with Khan Nilhuma, visit military installations that served the Luthorians during their operation and visit numerous parts of Bianjie’s institutions, such as the College of Dovani or other beautiful locations during his stay. 

As a former Luthorian colony, the matter of apologies for colonisation also comes up in mind when considering this visit.  

Emperor William XI will then visit New Verham, where he’ll meet with state officials, visit the rebuilt Luthorian embassy and meet the troops who remained in New Verham to ensure security near the embassy. Around 30 Marines remains stationed in New Verham to this day to secure the perimeter, as the Luthorian government continues to classify New Verham as an “dangerous nation”. 

The Luthorian monarch will conclude his visit in Xsampa – where the Emperor will, as with Bianjie, meet with Xsampan state official, pay his respects to the fallen of the nuclear strike on Metz-Leonid in 5600. The monarch will also visit two monstaries during his visit – aiming at “learning more” about Daenist cultural and religious customs, in opposition to standard Luthorian Hosianism. 

Emperor William XI will be travelling during 17 days in total (3 days in New Englia, 5 days in Bianjie, 4 days in New Verham and 5 days in Xsampa). During which, the continuity of the Luthorian state will be provided by the Privy Council under the Prince of Orange. 

Prime Minister Seddon’s office remarked that Emperor William’s visit was aimed at primairly “building trust” between Luthori and these Dovani states following “years of shared history and collaboration throughout these last few years”. The Prime Minister surprisingly didn’t reject the notion of colonial “apologies” during this visit, saying that “the monarch apologising for Luthorian crimes isn’t something new, at all, besides it’s been 3.000 years since the last Luthorian troops left the continent following the signature of the Treaty of Port Morgan. But it’s up to His Majesty’s discretion to value the usefulness of such apologies to include them in a speech”

Domestic: PM Seddon leads cabinet makeover - as Tories struggle in latest general election poll.

PM Cameron Seddon led today a “cabinet makeover” so to speak. The reason? The Labour Party’s subtle rise in the polls, threatening Conservative chances in the 5704 elections.  

While the relationship between Labour leader Edward Holian-Keaty and deputy leader Henry Stockton hasn’t been the best personally, the pair has been working to change the people’s opinion on the Labour Party following 3 decades in the opposition. Playing on the people’s fatigue after this long period of Conservative dominance, and rebuilding their trust among the left-wing elements of the Labour Party, such as trade unions, the NLP’s poll numbers have soared from 27.2% to 34.8%, in a recent ClearView poll, a rise of 7.6 pp between a March 5702 poll and the 11 January poll from ClearView. 

The polling institute also polled the Conservatives at a disappointing 36.3%, merely 2.5% above Labour. Other polls such as a 13 February poll from the Palmington Institute states that both the Labour Party and the Conservative Party have “a very high chance” of being able to form a government. Polls indicates that the Tories will likely lose their majority but be able to form a minority government or a coalition government alongside either the HPP or the Liberals. 

To avoid such a fate, the Prime Minister seemingly led a “thorough” cabinet reshffule, bring in more “fresh” faces into the administration.  

Foreign Secretary Stanley remained in post – his work in New Verham being highly credited and looked up upon, besides Mr. Stanley, while a member of the House of Peers – remained an influential force within the Tory Party’s backbenches, working alongside the liberal-leaning Constitutionalist Group in both Houses of Parliament. 

Chancellor George Martwick, already under pressure for his public backing of an unpopular Reform Luthori paper calling for the raising of the national retirement age from 67 today to 68 and unpopular within the party due to his links with the recent Oberfell scandal – has been sacked, being replaced with right-wing economist, Dr. Joseph Martwell. 

Other cabinet members have ceased to be as such, being replaced by others, more loyal to the Prime Minister’s agenda. The Prime Minister, while throwing a bone to the different factions of the Conservative Party, seems to be reasserting control over the Cabinet amid struggling poll numbers and increased party disaffection with his leadership. 

Some Tories backbenchers have raised issues with Seddon’s leadership, expressing concern that the administration’s perceived “lack of record” on domestic affairs might impact the party’s electoral chances. 

Influential hard right leader Patrick Simon said that the struggling poll numbers were a “message from the silent majority of Luthorians to focus inward”, as he argues for lessened foreign interventionism in favor of increased domestic investment.

Seddon: “Coal isn’t what the nation needs” as Tories push for stricter regulations on pollution emission on campaign trail.

The 5704 elections are coming – and the Tories and Labour are neck-to-neck in the polls. Prime Minister Seddon, in an unexpected bid to cover the green-leaning voters, has said in an interview to Channel 7’s “Face the Nation” program that, in his view, “coal is now an outdated form of energy production”. This single statement sent shockwaves in the Luthorian political world, as the Tories have usually been the steadfast defender of coal production in the Principality of Orange,  

These statements from the Prime Minister in a context of a general election in late March have surprised many political analysts, who argued that the Tories were focused on countering Labour’s gains in the rich industrial southern regions – but this move might just have derailed that effort. 

Conservative seats in these areas are highly sought after by both the Labour and Hosian People’s Party, the latter having focused their campaigning in these areas with high disaffection with the current government. Voters in these areas have said the same thing, that they feel that the government isn’t doing enough to alleviate their situation.  

With this statement, it’s likely that the Tories will lose more support in these regions, with the Labour Party likely seizing the opportunity to make substantial gains in Orange and Erneshire. While coal no longer represents a high part of Luthori’s energy production – it’s historical and cultural significance in the hearts of many still shape the region to this day. 

Seddon has said that his wish was that a second premiership “extends alternative and renewable energy sources” and pursue an "aggressive policy on pollution reduction measures", a statement that has also drew the ire of the influential pro-petroleum lobby and of Luthori Petroleum. Nevertheless, the statement also drew support from climatologists and scientists who are arguing in favour of an energetic transition process. 

Tories’ chances are, regardless of their performances in industrial constituencies, strengthened in urban centres where this shift has been noted and appreciated by some centrist voters.  

Whether or not this move will lead to the Conservatives scoring a victory is yet unclear.

The 5704 general elections were to be a test on Prime Minister Seddon’s leadership and personal popularity and while the Conservatives maintained a majority in the Imperial Diet, the party nonetheless lost its absolute majority of 3 seats in the lower house, being reduced to a situation of plurality. 

The Conservative Party won 228 seats in the Diet and 31.3% of the popular vote, out of 477 seats, followed by the Labour Party at 217 seats and 29.7% of the national popular vote. Exit polls, later confirmed by official results place the Liberal Party at 10 seats, an light decrease of 1 seat compared to their previous performance in 5700, the Hosian People’s Party seized 3rd spot with 13 seats, a jump of 4 seats compared to 5700 where they won 9 seats. 

Reasons for this are stated to have been the Prime Minister’s campaign, which damaged the Conservatives’ chances in the “Industrial Heartland” of the Empire – where the Tories lost several seats in favour of insurgent HPP and Labour candidates, but, on the other hand, Prime Minister Seddon, through his successful foreign policy in New Verham secured voters from an higher educated background, gaining ground in urban areas, and specifically in high-revenue neighbourhoods. In opposition, the HPP gained grounds among disgruntled former Tory voters in both Erneshire, Northriding and Orange. 

While Labour strengthened its hold in industrial regions, their perceived “weakness” on foreign policy and economic issues – both issues having been raised during both leaders’ debate and where Mr. Holian-Keaty struggled against the experienced Prime Minister, nonetheless, the Leader of the Opposition landed a few hits on the Prime Minister’s record, claiming he was “warmongering” through his foreign policy style and “dangerously breaking the precedent of Luthori not joining multilateral alliances” - he moreover attacked the government’s “failed” industrial policy, claiming that more jobs have been lost during the last 4 years than created and that the government “utterly failed in its duties to the Luthorian people to provide struggling and laid off workers with enough to live until back to work”. 

Mr. Seddon, to deflect from the accusation, promised that his next government would create “thousands of new jobs” during their tenure, with details being vague about how this promise would be implemented. He also argued for “strengthened national security – through the strengthening of border patrols”. Prime Minister Seddon, while not backing down from his earlier coal comments, stated that a Tory government would “massively invest” into the “international oil industry”. A move, that will in the Prime Minister’s mindset, accelerate Luthorian economic growth through its role as a “outside partner” to most oil-producing titans, such as the Vascanian Empire. 

The Prime Minister also promised the launch of a “debate and reflection” upon Luthori’s retirement age – a move that has already drew the ire of unions and opposition parties, with the Labour Party’s platform instead arguing for the decrease of the current retirement age from 67 to 65. The Trade Unions’ Council has already warned that “any move to increase the burden placed upon ordinary Luthorians will be met with a strong popular resistance” 

While the Tories scored an important victory in these election, Prime Minister Seddon’s popularity remains shaky, with an earlier poll from WePoll stating that around 41% of Luthorians had a good opinion on the Prime Minister’s performance and that 52% of Luthorians opposed it. Already, players within his Cabinet and the wider Conservative Party have expressed informal reservations at his extended stay at Number 10 following this disappointing election night, after all, the Tories are forced into a minority government or form a governing coalition with either the Liberals or the HPP, neither option being appealing. 

PM Seddon has indicated his “full commitment” to the Office of the Prime Minister and has called rumours of a potential coup against his premiership “lies and deceptions” from his rivals – he moreover announced “extending a hand to both the Liberal Party and the Hosian People’s Party” in order to negotiate a government agreement with either party.
