KalMilInCo hits developmental snag in new air superiority fighter
"Budget will be astronomical" says Project manager
Sulu AFB, Grand Duchy of Ananto
September 20, 5702
The declassified conceptual design of the new F/A 12 which is expected to over run budget by ₭60 Billion
Tasked with modernizing Kalistan's air defense assets, KalMilInCo is just finishing the first rounds of testing and evaluation with the new KA-11 CAS attack planes. The KA-11 proved to receive a high B rating, with the initial pilots noting difficulty in take-off and landing (especially stopping after taxi, due to weight characteristics of the plane) and the lack of long distance radar systems which would make shifting to new mission priorities difficult mid flight, but excellent handling in the air, excellent attack characteristics and top marks in survivability and sheer destructive combat force of the main cannon and ordinance deployed from the plane's hardpoints.
The other project that KalMilInCo was tasked with was a new modern hypersonic Air Superiority fighter. KMC teamed once more with AeroKal and KalMD to develop a sophisticated new plane with the following specs: Could engage above mach 2, could confuse or avoid enemy radar, and could match the newest planes currently available on the planet. Thought the KA-11's program is moving quickly toward deployment, the Air Superiority program is stalled.
"The plane we are tasked with designing is too expensive, and will likely not meet the required specifications, no matter how much money we throw at it," said project designer Raul Ebersole, of KMC. "Kalistan does not possess a magic wand, regrettably. We cannot handwave a plane out of thin air, especially at the budget we were provided. We understand there are limitations of what the Government is willing to spend on this program, but I can assure you, the budget for this, if we ever are able to design the plane, will be astronomical, just in testing, let alone actually building something like the Defense Ministry would want. That doesn't even include many of the necessary materials to build it, some of which Kalistan does not have easy access to."
Ebersole predicted that the program will easily run over budget by ₭60 Billion before they ever get a testable model. "The technology is just too advanced to do it cheaply. You can't have it both ways, you either spend money and get something that MIGHT work, or you don't put money behind it and nothing ever happens. I think our Government belongs to the second group of not throwing a ton of money at a project that has a low chance of actual success."
Ebersole said that countries who do design these sort of planes have done so by prioritizing military spending, and spending borrowed money. "Kalistan is, however, allergic to deficit spending. We can do it: Its easy to design a plane. We know how to build mach 1.5, and even conceptually how to build mach 2 planes. But they are also asking for some degree of stealth, and the electronics for that alone would put us billions of Imperial Rubles over budget, and to be completely honest, we aren't even sure that sort of technology actually exists in the real world. All we have is claims that it does. But modern radar is really good, and the best way to make your plane invisible to modern radar is to make it look like not an airplane to radars. Problem is, of course, making it look like not an airplane also makes it fly like not an airplane, and that is a tough and expensive nut to crack."
Ebesrole did note that nations to Kalistan's north have officially claimed to have cracked it nonetheless. "Well, what can I say: other nations seem to do this sort of thing every day. So called stealth planes have existed for a very long time in Terra. Kalistan, however has never had to design one from nothing, so, since the Government refuses to increase the budget due to its anti-deficit mentality, and the estimated costs are quickly overrunning budgetary projections, I think this design itself may be headed for the circular file. We will be meeting with the Defense Ministry again to continue discussions about next steps with the F/A-12 program, but if the Defense Ministry's previous statements on the question are any indication of where Her Imperial Majesty's mind is on this plane, they may be revising their ask, rather than going ahead with this design."
Money has plagued the Government's push for modernization quite often recently. The Military Budget is considered very efficient in that it tends to produce only what is absolutely needed, works very hard to keep costs down, and strives to use existing assets rather than go on spending sprees to procure weaponry that Kalistan doesn't specifically need. "We do have an existing multi-role fighter," said Ebersole. "Its design is old, but the Empire is not exactly naked." But Ebersole believes that the desire to modernize reflects a desire to keep up with our neighbors in terms of security. "Many nations around us have unlimited access to new fighters. But many nations around us don't pay too much concern to the amount they spend on defense."
The fate of the F/A-12 up in the air for the time being, Ebersole did praise the modernization efforts nonetheless. "I think Her Imperial Majesty's heart was in the right place. But the bright side, we did get one new system out of the process- The KA-12 is a fantastic plane, for what its mission is. It may not be the prettiest belle at the ball, but we know from our preliminary and subsequent tests that is does its job and then some, a job which will save lives on the ground. It can blow up a tank, or deliver HE bullets into troop concentrations. It will definitely more than serve its mission in conventional regular attacks on our nation. But the missile defense program which was cancelled last year and likely this plane too are just too expensive, and won't do enough damage where we need them to to justify the cost."
If the F/A-12 program is officially abandoned, Ebersole said he may propose modernizing the KA-10 plane to include new radar and new ordinance. "They'll have to toss out the survivability point to do it though," said Ebersole. "Through the whole process, that has been a main shorctoming: you can't make a plane like this highly survivable, because that would literally slow it way down. The CAS-11 plane is basically heavy armor in the sky, so it can afford to be heavier and more lumbering, stalking, and attacking. A supersonic fighter, if its hit, its more or less destroyed, but you could blow off one of the CAS-11's two engines and it could still comfortably fly back to base. So instead of building a brand new plane, it'll probably be more cost effective to tweak the design and modernize the planes we already possess."
Comment from the Defense Ministry said they still are interested in continuing the program, but also noted budget overruns and any sort of spending outside the budget would require Imperial approval.

Christina Ananto-McKinley Named new Director of House Ananto
KRTVN Business Analyst "checks all boxes" said outgoing Ananto chief
Kaliburg, Grand Duchy of Ananto
December 1, 5702
Lady Christina Ananto-McKinley, second cousin to Empress tapped to take House Ananto into the next few decades
28 year old business and finance analyst and second cousin to the Empress Lady Christina Ananto-McKinley has been named to the top spot at House Ananto. Ananto-McKinley works for KRTVN Channel 1, where she analyzes business and finance for the daily business program called "Your Money Today." She also appears infrequently as an expert pundit. Ananto-McKinley has her Masters of Business Administration degree from the University of Suldanor and a Bachelors' degree in public finance and accounting and one in public relations. She has worked for KRTVN for two years.
"KRTVN is a great job," said Lady Ananto-McKinley last month, "but, you know, if Her Imperial Majesty taps you for this sort of work, family comes first." As part of her new post, Lady Ananto-McKinley will essentially be the day to day managers of the entire royal House, including all pensions and benefits for the Royal Family, all business and investments that House Ananto is involved with, as public relations for House Ananto and the Royal Family, and managing the marriages and titles of all members. "I'd essentially be the Empress' business manager," said Lady Ananto-McKinley.
More importantly, the Director of House Ananto serves as CEO of Miramar Holdings, the publicly traded Royal Investment firm. Miramar is a several hundred billion dollar investment corporation that is deeply leveraged with State industry in Kalistan, and has major holdings in Much of the private sector in both Kalistan and Gaduridos. "Miramar represents a significant institutional investor in the Anantonese Empire," said Lady Ananto-McKinley, "and so it predictably operates very conservatively, to ensure a smaller ROI in exchange for a heavily stabilizing effect on markets. Miramar investments tend to encourage others to follow suit, making them a major influence in both the financial markets and individual investment nationwide. As a company that is worth hundreds of billions of Imperial Rubles itself, just in terms of its assets, it is a direct input by the Empress into the economy and most certainly does prefer conservative institutional players with excellent corporate governance and strong protections for workers rights. Through its investments, the Empress can more or less dictate economic policy across the private sector of this nation as she does using National Policy in the public sector."
Lady Ananto-McKinley has been married to Mr. Johnathan Casablancas, a Sulari investor, for four years and has one child so far. At the age of 28, and a year younger than Her Imperial Majesty, she is one of the younger directors of House Ananto named, and is expected to stay with the job for the remainder of her career. "This is an honor to serve the Empire in this capacity," she said as she accepted to nomination. "It's a once in a lifetime chance, the work isn't that difficult, when you consider laying brick in NSP as a comparison, and you do genuinely important work that serves the people of this nation. Who could possibly say no if they had the chance to do this?"
She replaces the outgoing Lady Allison Ananto-Westmoreland who officially retired from public service as of November 30th of this year after serving in her position for fourteen and a half years. "Bringing Christina on was a no brainer: She checks all the boxes. She has a background in business and finance, she has done PR and is not afraid of the press, she has a good brain in her head and most importantly, she's a young Ananto who can make a great career out of managing this House. Both Her Imperial Majesty and I believe she will do wonderfully in this role."

Robert Kaplan speaks at Annual AYIC Dinner
Says "Rosenfeld is Diaspora's Choice" for Consort
Sulari, Duchy of Suldanor
January 1, 5703
Kaplan gives enthusiastic speech at this year's Annual Dinner held at Sun Coast
Mr. Robert Kaplan, Director of the Anantonese Yeudi Interests Committee said "Her Imperial Majesty could not have chosen a better partner than Elliot Rosenfeld." His glowing ode was part of his keynote speech at the Annual New Year's Day Dinner, held this year in Sulari. This major confab and fundraiser raised AYIC more than ₭7 million Imperials, most of which will be dedicated to the operations of the Anantonese Redn Language Learning Institute in the capital, which has been opened for seven years and has graduated 4 classes of 185 Students in this time, many of which have been students of language and scholars of Yeudi religious texts.
Kaplan's statements were reflective of the prevailing attitudes expressed in a new national survey of Yeudis across the Empire who were asked how they viewed Mr. Rosenfeld and his engagement to Her Imperial Majesty, Empress Carolina II Ananto. Yeudis across the nation are reportedly very excited that a Yeudi is engaged to Her Imperial Majesty, and the vast majority of those interviewed about Mr. Rosenfeld said they found him to be interesting and intelligent, and good public representation of Kalistani Yeudis. Interestingly enough most Yeudis in Kalistan said they believed their was no contradiction between Rosenfeld's Yeudi cultural heritage and his Brethrenist faith and fully support his marrying a non-Yeudi, arguing that the cultural prohibition against marrying non-Yeudis that exists in other nations has never really existed in Kalistan. "There aren't enough of us for us to make a big deal about it anyway," said one survey respondent.
Kaplan's effusive words for the fiancé of Her Imperial Majesty, were wrapped in a call for more support and broader usage of Redn in Kalistan. "Elliot Rosenfeld is clearly the preferred choice of the Kalistani Yeudi diaspora," he declared. "He is a man committed to learning and to honesty and integrity. He is a man who learns about his culture, and does not apologize to anyone for being who he is. His commitment to this organization in Razar and now in the Capital is also exemplary: He was always the first to offer his time and his hands on any project the Razar AYIC put him to, whether it was helping our elders, or translating documents, or writing letters to our foreign supporters, he was first in line, and we are so proud to have him in the Capital continuing his work."
Kaplan continued as he pivoted to the Redn Language Learning Institute in Kaliburg. "To our real point this evening, Mr. Rosenfeld himself is furthermore the example of an independent scholar, and since moving to the capital, has actually taken the opportunity to enroll in language classes to improve both his fluency and his literacy. He is the example for every single Yeudi in this nation- It is important that we recapture our own language, the language of diaspora Yeudis for centuries before it faded from our memory. This is what our language sounded like when it travelled from Majatra, into Artania and then to Seleya and then to Kalistan. When we started, there were less than 25,000 actual fully conversational speakers of Redn. But Yeudis like Mr. Rosenfeld took the time and the effort and with the discipline of a man who is starved for the culture of his ancestors, is now learning his language, and his heritage and his own history. He is a credit to his people, and will make a fantastic partner for our Empress."
Kaplan said that all students study for free thanks to donations from AYIC supporters across Kalistan. "We started this program with a building and a dream," said Kaplan. "And through generous donations from our supporters, we reached our endowment goal in just 4 years. Meanwhile, we were able to hire staff and begin conducting our classes in Redn writing and reading, conversational fluency, and literature. Each course takes about 3 years to complete. Our next step is to offer Redn in schools for they goys to elect Redn as a language credit too. We are currently working with the public schools in Kaliburg-Port Davon School System to have a pilot Redn program citywide by 7205."
Kaplan also noted that the new director of House Ananto, Lady Christina Ananto-McKinley said House Ananto has committed to contribute ₭10 Million to AYIC's Redn Language programs over the next ten years. "Lady Ananto said this was the first of the support AYIC can expect from the Royal Family, and it is their hope that AYIC can expand to other Yeudi Diaspora nations to help them either recapture Redn as a spoken language or to to introduce it abroad as a common language among diaspora Yeudis, so even if we are from different nations, we still have the ability to communicate with one another in undzer eygener schprak."
Kaplan believes that with enough work, and with the proper kind of support, including the kind of support the Consort to be and the Empress are showing for the effort, Redn can be reignited across northern Seleya and Artania, recovering what was essentially a lost language for Yeudi populations across Terra. "I mean: its even possible. Can you imagine? What if one day, we opened a Redn Language school in Beiteynu/Amudim? I can only dream. May I live so long that my eyes can see such a day!" He then sighed, and smiled and declared, "Mir iudis lebn aoyf khlumus. But at least we have true friends once more in Kaliburg," by which he meant in the Royal Family.

Chancellor announces broad agreement on regional security with Egelion
"Landmark Conference" lays foundation for future cooperation
Kaliburg, Grand Duchy of Ananto
March 2, 5703
Chancellor of the Empire Sir Reg Hanson reporting on Egelian Conference
The Moderate Chancellor of the Empire announced acceptance of the Final Executive Report on the recent Altean talks in the Egelian capital between Her Imperial Majesty, Empress Carolina II Ananto and His Majesty, Emperor Leon Alexander Montelivet of the Kerisian Empire. The two neighbors have been in an unofficial cold war since the beginning of hostilities in New Verham in February 5699, which almost turned hot following the expulsion of Egelian diplomats from Kalistan and reciprocal military escalation near Luncasi. The Report covers the agreements between the two Imperial Monarchs including commitment to increased communication around military maneuver, a reaffirmation of the Oceanic Accords and a resumption of cultural and diplomatic interaction between the two Anantonese Nations.
"Her Imperial Majesty considers this return to the Status Quo ex ante with increased military communication around deployments abroad is a win for both sides," said the Chancellor as he was announcing the bill's passage. "The victories aren't exactly revolutionary, but I don't think that was the goal of this meeting: Instead, I think both monarchs believe that peace and tranquility in our part of the world is a goal worth working toward, and the discussion around military communication feels like a commitment to consideration of Kalistan's point of view in Altea which is what Her Imperial Majesty wanted. She does not need Altea to get Anantonese Clearance--that has never been the case. She merely would like to hear from the Egelian Government before it hits the papers, so Kalistan may prepare properly. If we are friends, this is a consideration we are also willing to provide, and from a security standpoint on both sides of the Ocean it just makes sense."
In exchange for the concession on military communication, the Empress offered that Kalistan and Egelion would take the first steps toward joint exercises, joint patrols and some limited intelligence sharing in the future. "We are not there yet," said Sir Hanson. "That trust and sense of cooperation still needs time to develop. And we do have standing agreements with Lodamun around intelligence sharing, so any decision on that would necessarily include them. But Her Imperial Majesty offered to begin working with Egelion in that direction, and though it may take a while, barring some exogenous shock, I think both Sovereigns want to do this the right way and inch toward one another, as opposed to away from one another."
This region of the world is special, said and Sir Hanson, who even used the word "exceptional" in his speech. "The Anantonese Region, including Lourenne at one time, Kalistan, Lodamun, Gaduridos, and we also add Egelion, is truly the exception to the rule in Terra. Abroad, you see political instability, followed by long periods of inertia, followed by a civil war or a race war. All of these ruin the security and well being of generation after generation of the people of the territories outside of this region. But there is something special, something important about our part of the world, and I can include much of Northern Seleya in this as well, where that doesn't happen to us. Whether it be enlightened government, or competent and professional bureaucracies, whether it be the attitude of our people with regard to their own liberties, and the willingness of elites to stay in their lane and not trouble the people as much as possible, we are built differently here. And I think this is the basis, should be the basis, excuse me, of any cooperation going forward. We have something special about us that makes us more inclined to stability and less inclined toward chaos. It is an Anantonese Spirit, I might say, which animates the nations that are situated along the coasts of this ocean, and drives us not only to pursue greatness in our respective areas, but I dare say, achieve it. And it is worth protecting above all other things, because otherwise, we become just like those who will never know peace, prosperity or stable government for long, and instead spend a lot of their time killing themselves and each other, and another significant portion of their time rebuilding once more what they just got done destroying."
Hanson called this a "landmark conference" and says it lays the foundation for future cooperation. "As we both look west, we notice that many of the major players on our horizon are being quiet. It almost feels like a calm before the storm. You usually can't trust a Majatra or an Artania not at war somewhere. This might be the best time to begin talking to our regional partners about contingencies before we find ourselves needing them and not having prepared for them. I think Her Imperial Majesty's work with the Egelian Emperor in Altea is a first step toward that sort of cooperation, and it might behoove us to bring in Lodamun and maybe even Valruzia too, so we can start talking about continental and hemispheric security rather than just local security. It is much more in our interests to work together than alone, or worse, against one another, in the face of a potential unified opponent that lurks the edges of the map and haunts our nightmares."
The report received approval by acclamation, and the Chancellor thanked Her Imperial Majesty's Foreign Minister, Sir Thomas Harney, for his preliminary work on this conference to make it an easy and focused use of Her Imperial Majesty's time and attention. He said Her Imperial Majesty looks forward to more opportunities to continue to working with our neighbors on peace and security, as we ourselves continue building Fortress Kalistan.

Opinion: Nationalists Should support Egelian Deal
Empress understands National Interests best served by regional Cooperation
Kaliburg, Grand Duchy of Ananto
March 30, 5703
Her Imperial Majesty brilliantly threads a needle in Egelion
Editorial
Earlier this month, The moderate Chancellor of the Empire Lord Reg Hanson delivered the final report of the diplomatic efforts in Egelion of Her Imperial Majesty, Empress Carolina II Ananto to the National Assembly, for a pro forma vote of ratification. The Chancellor discussed the history of the crisis, and efforts that were taken on both sides of the Anantonese Ocean to resolve the situation in a way that would allow both nations to claim victory and move toward peace and cooperation. During his nauseatingly milquetoast dissertation about the greatness of cooperation with our current chief geopolitical rivals, about 2/3rds of the Nationalist Caucus walked out of the Assembly in protest.
Their point was that the report sounded like a sop to Egelion rather than evidence that Her Imperial Majesty stood on business in the Egelian capital and they weren't about to sit around and listen to stories about the reasonableness of the Egelian Emperor, or the admittedly modest concessions the Empress was able to wring from him. As one of the protest Nationalists said later, "He wouldn't have given any of those concessions if he did not stand to gain more than he lost from them somewhere else. It is handy just to have Kalistan look the other way while he conducts his imperialist war in New Verham. I'm suprised and deeply saddened she did not demand more from him for that alone!"
The Chancellor, when he was finished, asked for and got an acclamation approval of the report from the Deputies who remained in the Chamber, allowing him yet another win for the Moderate position while entirely sidestepping the legitimate Nationalist concerns that the Empress gave away the entire farm for nothing. It is the latest in a example of the moderate Chancellor demonstrating that he does not need Nationalists to conduct Government Policy, and represents a sea change from when this position was the dominant position under the Chancellor.
But: There is another viewpoint among the Nationalists who stayed, and in fact a number of them (about 15) did stay and voted with the Chancellor on this report. They argued that first, the Nationalist position is to support the interests of the Nation, and nobody personifies National interests like the very embodiment of the Kalistani Nation itself, Her Imperial Majesty. If the Empress says it is in National Interests, it is a Nationalist's job to support her, because after all, she is the one who determines what the National Interest is. We can disagree with her if we like, but if you weigh the opinion of 95 million Kalistanis against the opinion of one Lady when the question is "What is the National interest," she wins every single time. To oppose that is to violate our very reason to exist.
Second: Look at how she represented her Nation in Altea! Despite the very personally insulting things that the Egelian Government said about her, calling her puerile, opportunistic, paranoid, self-destructive, vainglorious, power-hungry, out of control, driven by envy and lacking of any status worthy of Egelian acknowledgement, and a child simply throwing a tantrum, among every other horrible name they could sling at her, when the Egelian Government changed its tone and invited Her Imperial Majesty back to talk, she went and she held her head up proudly as she arrived in Altea. She sent an advanced team to negotiate the preliminaries, as a responsible leader would, so that by the time she herself went, the agreement was all but signed. She demonstrated that the slanders and libels leveled against her were less important to Kalistan than the project of peace.
And she got what she wanted out of the meeting: In all accounts, her agenda was very limited. Peace and more communication. She agreed to some of the asks of the Egelian Government as well. She managed the Kalistani side of the matter with grace and dignity, and made Kalistanis proud of their Empress. And that alone is worth supporting and encouraging because it improves out image abroad and makes us stronger as a nation.
Third: Her grace and dignity through the entire thing has allowed her to clearly enunciate the National Interest with regard to Egelion. It was not about personal pique. It was about the insecurity Fortress Kalistan feels when our neighbors go to war, because they do not go to war in a vacuum. Everything our neighbors do affects our National Security. The War in NEKK, though it did not touch Kalistan, nonetheless was a destabilizing energy in the region, which decreases our Nation's sense of security. The same holds for local nations engaging in places like the Migrants Pass or the seas between Majatra and Seleya. Not because war is happening here, but war can be brought back home, and then Kalistan would be affected though we tried to stay out of it, for no more reason than our neighbors decided to go to war.
Military communication, in this point, is a major win for Kalistani security. If we know what will happen, we can prepare ourselves, and we can theoretically ask if we could support our neighbors or just plan to stay out of the way. This guarantee of communication, and the potential for joint patrols and possible intel sharing is a major gain for Kalistani Security. That would not have happened if she would have gone in there as the firebrand the Nationalist protest Deputies insisted she be. She would have, instead, proved every Egelian slur right about her, much to the Nation's detriment.
It is possible to see this meeting two ways, but we'll use the remainder of this editorial making a case for the second way. The first is the Empress bent the knee to the Egelian Emperor, figuratively, if not literally. In giving him a free hand in New Verham, as her predecessor did in Rildanor, and only gaining a promise to communicate, she essentially was the first to formally confirm Egelion as a global power that we all know it aspires to be.
We could hold that view, but we want to suggest an alternative: In going to Egelian and securing her goals, she not only maintains Kalistani independence of action and policy from the expanding Egelian Empire, but also sets us up to work alongside them in the future on matters that concern us both. Fortress Kalistan is one thing: The strategic doctrine of Kalistan's armed forces aims to make any attempt to apply military force against Kalistan and Ananto, by any power on the globe far too costly as to not be worth it should they succeed. Kalistani planners would rather burn the entire nation to ash than surrender an inch of ground uncontested anywhere. That's one thing.
But let's suppose some foreign power or some block comes in and starts messing with our neighbors, who we must rely on to hold the doors shut while Kalistan gets its war footing spun up? What if Lodamun falls? What is Gaduridos is stolen once more by some malevolent Majatran or Artanian power? Will Kalistan be able to respond in time to help our neighbors, who we absolutely rely on with enough force to make a difference, or will be be relegated to just retreating to our Island and our coast and waiting for the onslaught?
It would be far better in this sense to have the military of a global power working with us, rather than siding with our enemies in this instance. Its not band-wagoning exactly: Egelion's power simply cannot be ignored, given their proximity to our capital. In securing peace and setting a foundation for cooperation with Egelion, Her Imperial Majesty strengthens our Northern and Western approaches, by making Kalistani security to their south an Egelian Imperial Interest. We will never be a protectorate, we will never be a colony, but we can be a comrade in arms by making regional security all of our business. This in our belief secures Kalistani interests far better than being opposed to the entire world AND Egelion like our hardliners want us to be.
It is important for the Nationalists to remember, in diplomacy, we don't always get everything we want. If these hardheaded Deputies and the members of the Nationalist Caucus think we should go back to the days when Kalistan could dictate to the world, it is incumbent on us to remind them that this never happened. If they were trying to give the Chancellor a black eye by walking out, or trying to embarrass the Empress for some slight, like sacking the Chancellor before she could retire because she took that strong nationalist stance, just remember, the Chancellor had the votes without a single Nationalist vote being cast in favor of it. The Deputies have been at this game long enough to know that opposition is pointless, because the Chancellor doesn't move anything he can't pass, without a single Nationalist vote if need be, and when he does move it, it can be assumed to have been commanded by Her Imperial Majesty on some level. So there's actually no effective way to protest within the Legislature--if the Chancellor moves something its going to pass, because the Empress ordered it to.
And finally, we have the words of the former Chancellor of the Empire, the nationalist Lady Ericka Donahue, in retirement in Eshar. "Her Imperial Majesty is far more intelligent than every one of those idiots who walked out of the vote," she said last week in an interview on a different topic. "She is far more intelligent than most people in this nation and we are a pretty well educated nation. She knows what she is doing, and always, always, deserves the benefit of the doubt. She may make mistakes, but that will never be because she is mistaken-- more like she is misled by others. She knows what she is doing, and I gotta tell you, I haven't ever been as convinced that a woman can see the future like I am with her. The only people they embarrassed by walking out is themselves, and the Nationalist Caucus should seriously consider replacing them ahead of the next elections, because they are not serving their constituencies well by doing something stupid like that."
There you have it: nobody could ever consider Lady Donahue a moderate, or a sympathizer of some milquetoast sop to the Egelians. She is a Nationalists' Nationalist who went down preaching a hard nationalist position. And she feels much the same way as we do on the matter. The Empress likely sees something that we don't. She can afford to take a 10,000 foot view. She communicates with others at higher levels than most Kalistanis will ever achieve. We as Nationalists need to rally behind our Empress and should support the Egelian Deal because this cooperation on regional interests serves, among others, Kalistani National Interests too.

Plateau Releases "The High Country"
Alt-Folk Quintet Hombres Alternativos represents shift for Country label
Nevaras City, Duchy of Nevaras
May 20, 5703
The High Country, on Plateau Records is a mix of Alternative, Country, and Eclectic Weirdness
Plateau Records is primarily known for country and alt-country. It has served the country and folky markets for a very long time, filling a niche in Kalistan's primarily alternative music scene. But is seems that even Plateau Records is not above recording artists outside of its normal genres. And Hombres Alternativos is proof positive of that theory. The Alt-Folk quintet from Nevaras City said that getting a recording deal with Plateau was the reason they became a band in the first place.
"Yeah, we all grew up loving Plateau Records," said lead singer and primary songwriter Greg McHenry. "I loved their willingness to tint country with other styles, and I really think their lo-fi no nonsense production style was exactly what we were looking for to help our freak flag fly." The band itself is composed of McHenry, who plays acoustic rhythm, Bob Reynolds on electric lead and sings back up, Chris DeMarcus on bass, Stew Velasco on drums and Javier Blanco on brass, primarily trumpet and occasionally keyboards/and Hammond organ. It's a wonderful weird eclectic mix of sounds which doesn't exist anywhere on the radio.
"We were definitely really impressed by some of the kind of mariachi stuff from Athosia and mainland Gaduridos," said Blanco. "But we couldn't find that stuff on LTD all the time, and getting records, especially from Athosia was kind of difficult, as they don't have a very well developed recording industry at all, and we would have to wait for those bands to come up here, which they almost never did. So after a while, we just decided to start making it ourselves." He also declared getting onto Plateau to be a goal of his.
"It's not so much that Plateau is going in a different direction with this band," said Veronica Miller, head of marketting at Plateau. "We are interested in expanding our customer base, as every company is, and so appealing to cross over audiences is a smart businss decisions. There is enough country in this band to appeal to some of our more alternative minded country fans, and enough rock to bring the alternative kids in. And who knows: maybe in that listen they may find something else they like, and decide to check out some of the other music we record. He have had some major artists on this label, including Carrie Hill, and though we're a smaller label, there is a whole market out here that we exclusively serve, so why not try to branch out?"
There is no telling what the record will do. It is unlikely, however to appear to the Kaliburg or Sulari scenes, but there is some evidence of movement within the Art Rock scene in the Capital and the Port Swedes scene, which has always been more eclectic and unique. "Our first shows after the release will be in Port Swedes," said McHenry. "We've been booked into a punk club strangely enough. I can't imagine that punk kids will dig mariachi tinted alt-folk music with a lead singer who sing-talks his lyrics, but who knows? They drink a lot of coffee up there, so maybe we'll catch them on the right day."
To help them gain exposure, they filmed a low budget music video which has been playing on M7 last week. "We got a few requests," said McHenry. "That's always a trip, whenever I turn on M7, and there's our video. And I'm basically like 'We made it. Our band is on M7.' There really is no better feeling. That's such validation. And you know what would be better? If we could sell enough copies of this record to recoup. That would be fantastic!" McHenry said that the band and the label are putting together a tour to promote the album, primarily in Nevaras and Vrassa, though they are hoping to play some nights in Kaliburg. "Oh there's a million clubs over there. We can easily get into them, but we need to build a bit of a name first.
Meanwhile, you can check out Hombres Alternativos' new Video for their first single from The High Country, the band's debut album on Plateau Records. The song is "The Four Letter Word", and it is in medium rotation on KRTVN and M7 currently. And check out The High Country in all your local record stores!

Lady Nicolette Ananto-Collins to represent Empire in Egelion
Empress will remain in Kalistan to continue Government
Luxon, Grand Duchy of Ananto
June 2, 5703
Lady Nicolette Ananto-Collins, Princess of the Empire and Countess of Luxon will represent Kalistan in Egelion, interviewed here at Xanadu Winery in Luxon County
Her Highness, Princess of the Empire Nicolette Ananto-Collins, Countess of Luxon and former Regent, has been asked by Her Imperial Majesty to represent the Empire at the upcoming Conferences in Egelion dealing with regional security and cooperation. "I've been in retirement," said the Princess of the Empire, "but was also continuing to follow regional affairs. I helped Her Imperial Majesty prep for her recent trip to Altea, and when she returned home, she asked me if I could be free to represent the Empire in the event of a longer term conference. I said it would be an honor and a privilege."
The Princess of the Empire served as acting monarch during a decade long regency in the 5680s. She was known for strongly nationalist administration, but there is plenty of evidence that Lady Nicolette herself was more moderate than her government was, and that she saw herself in the care taker role while serving as regent. There is no doubt that she will correctly support the views of the Empress in the Egelian conferences. "I am there as the Empress' proxy," she said, "a role I am quite familiar with and very comfortable in. My niece thought of me because I have experience and the authority to speak on behalf of this Empire, and will represent Her Imperial Majesty's position well."
The Princess of the Empire said she is going to represent the Empire of Ananto and Kalistan to our neighbors. "Kalistan is simply uninterested in collective security agreements that bind our foreign policy to the policy choices made in foreign capitals over which we have no control," said the Princess. "We have never supported anything that restricts our ability to act independently, in our own interests. If anything can be said about Kalistan, it is that our policies are driven exclusively by our consideration of what is good for this nation. So it is unlikely we would ever join a mega alliance that is led by anyone else. In addition, our security agreement with the Kerisian States is tenuous at best. While it is far stronger with Lodamun. And I think Lodamun shares the same attitude about independence of foreign policy that Kalistan does. But, this does not preclude cooperation where it is appropriate. We have optimism that we will find grounds to cooperate in Altea, for the good of this region, but I want to make it clear: Kalistan will maintain its own security doctrine in and around our nation as we have been doing, and we fully fully expect other nations to do the same. Because that is in their own national interests, and not in service of some universalist, internationalist norm that in fact only serves to open us up to the abuses and attacks by foreign states."
Reuniting with the Empress shall be the man who began service during her regency, Sir Thomas Harney, who it is said gets along very well with the Princess of the Empire, as well as the Gaduri Viceroy, Marisol Paz Alvarez-Navarro, who will represent the Kingdom of Gaduridos to the committee, but will confer with, and defer to Kalistan on all international matters. "Her Excellency, Viceroy Alvarez will have the authority to commit Gaduridos to agreements in regard to their domestic activities," said the Princess, "but has deferred to Kalistan on regional and international matters, in accord with the Articles of Empire. I of course will get her read, and follow her lead on all matters where her nation's security is at stake, and will strive for the best deal for the Gaduri people as I do for the Kalistanis as well. She can be expected to fully and honorably represent the interests of her Nation to the conference."
The Kalistani goal is to further enhance regional security while continuing to stress sovereignty and common interest. "Regionalism was long the policy of my mother, Empress Mary and my brother Emperor Fredrick IV and sister Jennifer I. It remains the policy under my niece, Her Imperial Majesty Carolina II Ananto. There is something special about our region, above all others that sets us apart, but it also gives us a rock solid reason to want to work together, especially if foreign powers are themselves becoming a more formal bloc of power. We hear about pan-Dovanism regularly, and it is possible that Majatra is also considering a scheme to formally coordinate. It is therefore that our region should as well. Northern Seleya and Keris will alaways have more in common, whether it be a shared history or an overlapping culture that stretches from northern Keris to southern Gaduridos, and from Valruzia to Lourenne and Sekowo, which sets us apart, and shows us as the example for the world. This is mutual ground to build upon, and a spirit worthy of promotion at this conference."
The Empress will not attend the conference as her job prevents her from being out of the country for any prolonged period of time. The Princess of the Empire, however is free to remain as long as the conference continues. She will also travel with her husband, Sir Andrew Rohrbach, former director of ODEN-K, and will make something of a second honeymoon of the event.

Empress is Married in Eveari
HH Prince Consort Elliot Rosenfeld, named Count of Gran in Kalistan
Eveari, Grand Duchy of Ananto
June 20, 5703
Her Imperial Majesty, Empress Carolina II Ananto and His Highness, the new Prince-Consort Elliot Rosenfeld
On an overcast late spring afternoon at the Eveari Grove just off Ananto Estate, Her Imperial Majesty, Empress Carolina II Ananto married His Highness, the Prince Consort Elliot Rosenfeld in a small private Brethrenist ceremony. In attendance were the Eveari Brethren, as well as His Majesty, King William XVII of Hutori, Her Highness, Princess of the Empire Nicolette Ananto-Collins, her husband Sir Andrew Rohrbach, Lady Allison Antno-Westmoreland, Lady Christina Ananto-McKinley (Head of House Ananto) Chancellor of the Empire Lord Reg Hanson, Lady Rene Houston, Her Imperial Majesty's longstanding personal secretary and spokeswoman, Mr. and Mrs. Irving Rosenfeld, the Prince Consort's parents along with Martin Rosenfeld, brother to the Prince Consort and Best man for the Groom, and Dame Alice Bjorksdattir, who was Maid of Honor for the Bride.
The Wedding was a lowkey affair, held at Ananto Estate just on the edge of the Eveari Grove. This was where the first Royal Wedding and several after have also occurred It was cool and misty, but the wether held off long enough for the Meeting for Worship with concern for Marriage to be held outside, and the rain held off until after the entire party had moved inside.
After the Clerk announced the Meeting and everyone settled into quiet, the betrothed couple sat silent for nearly 20 minutes. They held hands the entire period of silence, and once in a while one or both of them would smile at the other one. Following the silent period, the Clerk rose to say that if anyone had anything to say to this couple, they would be welcomed to do so at this time. Several of the Friends stood and wished the new couple well, and said that it was wonderful to have the opportunity to meet Mr. Rosenfeld after all this time. Ms. Bjorksdattir read a sonnet that she felt was apropos for the event. Mr. Rosenfeld, the Father of the Groom stood and gave a blessing in Redn to both bride and groom, finishing with a hearty Mazel Tov, which was joined by several of the Brethrenists.
Following the comments, the Bride and Groom were invited to stand and say their words to one another. The couple said their words about love and care and trust and faith and fidelity. Both affirmed that they would conduct their home as a Brethrenist home and maintain the testimonies of the Brethrenist Faith of simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality, and stewardship and would raise their children as Brethrenists as well. It was a mutual commitment from both, and was clearly very important to both members. The Empress also affirmed that she intended to learn Redn along with the Prince Consort.
After the words were exchanged, The Clerk invited all in attendance to sign the Brethrenist Marriage Certificate, the document that the couple will hang in the entry way of their home. Traditionally, all guests sign the Marriage certificate attesting that they witnessed the marriage. The Everi Brethrenist Meeting also read aloud a minute that they passed at the last Business Meeting which read
Quote:The Eveari Monthly Brethrenist Meeting, as the home meeting of the Ananto Family, today joyfully affirm that we are working with the Kaliburg-Wilson Hill Monthly Brethrenist Meeting to take this couple into our joint care, to serve their spiritual and temporal needs, and to offer guidance, advice and care as they require. We hold our Friends Carolina Ananto and Elliot Rosenfeld in the Light of the Truth, and welcome Friend Rosenfeld to our Meeting. We willingly and freely accept this responsibility on our community and will continue our service to this Couple as we have for all of her Predecessors.
After the ceremony was completed, photos were taken of the family, and the married couple, and the guests of honor, and then the party moved inside to the Ballroom where a dinner was served. The menu was kosher to honor the family of the Groom and consisted of slow cooked savory roasted Lamb, rice, Valruzian latkas, and a medley of roasted potatoes, cherry tomatoes and carrots. The main entre for vegetarians was a tofu and quinoa salad, well seasoned with dill and garlic, and served warm. For desert, glazed honey cake was served. Many people in Eveari had never eaten a fully Kosher meal before and were surprised at how familiar most of the foods were to the normal Kalistani palate.
Following the meal, the wedding cake was cut. It too was made with kosher restrictions in mind, and it was also vegan to allow everyone to enjoy a piece. The cake cutting itself was mostly symbolic, as most of the guests were still full from dinner. But those who wished to have a piece all said they enjoyed it quite a lot. The Cake Cutting was followed by toasts, and then dancing which went well into the evening. ODEN sponsored an Open bar for all the guests, and the Married Couple retired by 9:30 PM, after saying goodnight to everyone present.
The Rosenfelds, Alice Bjorksdattir and Lady Nicolette and Sir Andrew stayed at the Ananto Estate overnight and spent the next day resting and getting to know one another better outside the excitment of the Wedding Ceremony. The Chancellor returned during the afternoon to witness the Prince Consort receive his titles, including Prince-Consort of the Empire of Ananto and Kalistan, and Count of Gran in the Duchy of Vrassa. However, Her Imperial Majesty needed to relieve the current Count of Gran, Lord Michael Bretton, of his position.
Lord Bretton was offered a new title of Marquis, which is essentially a life sinecure, and more than 1500 acres in rural Gran County, in exchange for his acquiescence to her request. He agreed to accepting the new title, "as a Wedding Gift to Her Imperial Majesty and the new Prince Consort and Count of Gran County." The matter successfully resolved, the Chancellor witnessed the title devolution to the Prince Consort, making him Count of his own home County, and giving he and the Empress an Excuse to visit the Plateau regularly. They will travel to Razar in a week to spend time on the Mainland before travelling to Valruzia where they will honeymoon for a month at Kulka-Kozyra Palace, which was a gift from the Valruzian Government to Her Imperial Majesty.
We join with the Brethren in Eveari and the people across the Empire to say Congratulations to the newly married couple. We wish them well, and have great hopes for the new family!

Editorial: The Curious Case of Amudim BS
How one nation's warped sense of reality causes death and suffering worldwide
Kaliburg, Grand Duchy of Ananto
August 2, 5703
A scene from the Teen Revenge movie "Plastic" (5702, Republican Pictures)
Editorial
Kalistan was named in a new article covering Egelion expansionism. Let's just dispense with this matter first. The Yeudis name Kalistan as a collaborator with Egelian Imperialism. Nothing could be further from the truth, but we'll leave it at that. We can't expect a bunch of illiterate maniacs in a far away desert to know much about other parts of the world, let alone comment intelligently about them. So we won't hold Amudim up to an expectation that is impossible (for them) to meet.
AYIC Director Robert Kaplan said it best in his recent speech to supporters, "The Yeudis who happen to inhabit the homeland are victims of centuries of wars, occupations and bad leadership of their own making, one that is known to have nuked another country just one human lifetime ago. They are worthy of our pity, but nothing more. You can try and try to help someone improve their own lives, you can try to understand where they are coming from, you can try to reach out your hand to the people you see suffering in the gutter of ignorance and near constant gaslighting by their own foreign-dominated government, but if they then still nonetheless choose--And make no mistake about it, it is a choice-- to live in the backward, pathetic, utterly ignorant state that they are currently in, eventually you have to call them 'Bruder', forgive them and cut them adrift. Otherwise, you risk being tainted by that debilitating affliction yourself. We're here trying to improve the lot of Yeudis abroad. We have far more important work to be doing than to worry about those who have chosen to remain slaves in their minds and in their lives."
In fact, we are known for the company we keep--This goes for Amudim as well as Kalistan. The relationship between Kalistan and Egelion, for example, has been problematic, for sure and we are tarred by ignorant foreigners for associating with them now. But, Kalistan did not cast a watchful eye in Rildanor. That's a lie, but of course it is, because it was written by Amudim. And that's all that needs to be said about it.
Now, if you've read this far, let us get to the real point of this editorial: A preview of the upcoming Regional Conference in Egelion. This conference will certainly be an interesting one, but The National is tentatively supporting it. We read of Lodamese hesitation and would like to amplify this. It must be a Northern Seleyan thing indeed to be somewhat suspicious of powerful states building large scale collective security agreements. Nationalists in Kalistan understand why Lodamun would prefer to maintain its own independence in its foreign affairs. That makes complete sense, because it is a standard Kalistan also holds to as well.
That said, based on the information documents the National Assembly has received regarding this conference, we are not sure that is what this conferences' purpose is. Kalistan can, and frequently does speak out against attempts by our neighbors to grow stronger and to build Massive military blocs. We opposed the Northern Alliance arrangement when it existed. We opposed the World Congress which was a collective security agreement run by and for Great Powers, that convinced and/or cowed the rest of the world into going along with Great Power designs for the world. And we are charter members of the Non-Aligned Movement, which is explicitly anti-Collective security.
There is only one instance where Kalistan will allow itself to be pulled into a situation where an "attack on one necessitates a response by all." And that is in the case of the Anantonese Empire: The Articles of Empire stipulate this. Kalistan is bound to defend Gaduridos should they be attacked by an outside power. That is the only exception. But AE is an example of imperialism and world systems, rather than a mutually shared set of beliefs or some sort of ridiculous "rules-based order" that people periodically attempt to assert and force down the throats of every nation. Because we happen to know that rules-based orders are just great power politics by another name. When you ask "Fine, but who makes the rules," its always the same great powers, and never the little guys. And then what difference is there between that and what Egelion does with their armed forces?
We'll leave alone the entirely unearned self righteousness of the liberals who argue that they should be allowed to force others to be "free", often at the point of a gun, whether it be warfare or starvation through sanctions. We will instead say that our Nationalists can sympathize with the position of Lodamun on this. And yet, it is our hope that the contributions of ardent Lodamun, which is capable of managing its own defense, and expansionist Egelion, which has demonstrated capacity and impunity to expand its influence globally will help build an agreement that first and foremost let's foreign nations who seek to project their influence into our region know that we are united in hostility to their projection. If nothing else, outsider governments and their colonialist schemes are not welcomed in Seleya and Keris. Not to say, we cannot associate freely with who we wish, but the influence of foreign governments cannot be allowed to take root in Seleya or Keris, or in fact the entire Anantonese Basin. We are our own people, we have our own visions for the future, and yes, we may disagree with one another, but there is more that we have in common with each other than we have with the power pretenders of the West.
This doesn't suggest our Princess, who is representing Kalistan at the conference, should go in there and sell the farm. Kalistan has its own interests which are quite independent from Lodamun or Egelion, or for that matter, even our close friends in Valruzia. This is natural and to be expected of all participants. We hope that the Princess of the Empire will instead go to the conference, represent our nation credibly, and get the best deal for Kalistan that she can. We likely won't get everything Kalistan wants. It is unimaginable that we would ever get guarantees from this group on Athosia, for instance. It must wait for another day. But if she hears of a proposal that will enhance Kalistani security in the region and Kalistan's position on the map, that happens to benefit others too, why wouldn't she accept this? After all, though she may be short sighted in domestic affairs, she has at least demonstrated a willingness to consider things in terms of absolute power rather than relative power, and though we may not necessarily always agree with this position as Nationalists, we do know that Her Imperial Majesty does.
If we have to make a prediction about the conference, what will be a likely result of it will be a new regional agreement on cooperation in training, some level of intelligence sharing, and coordination in case of moves by foreign states against our region. This will make Valruzia very important as the closest nation to likely combat spaces, which will necessarily involve commitments by all states to Valruzian defense, though not necessarily support if Valruzia should go on offense. In this sense, Valruzia would be a canary in a coal mine, and would act as an early warning system for the rest of the region. Providing Valruzia with significant intel and defense capacities would be the likely outcome. Our region is capable of doing this without much trouble. Knowing our government's very personal affinity for Valruzia (Her Imperial Majesty just honeymooned there for a month, for example) Kalistan wouldn't think twice about helping Valruzia build its capacity out--it would certainly enhance our own security for them to do so. We could say the same thing about Dolgava, but it is unlikely they will make a showing at the event, let alone be much of a major player in the region for the foreseeable future.
This conference will also likely form the basis of several bilateral agreements which the Seleyans seem to prefer, for good reason Nobody is interested in a great power led bandwagon. However, we do have a number of mutually overlapping interests that do not necessarily concern more than two or three states. Kalistan necessarily grandfathers Gaduridos into all international agreements it signs--that may often be enough to get a specific task done. We will never get there however, if we aren't talking with one another on a regular basis. This conference will open the door to a greater sense of trust and willingness to work together on specific things rather than establishing yet another great power bloc that our Empire joins but doesn't lead. That prospect holds no support within Kalistan. What does however interest Kalistan is the potential to enhance our own security and pursue our own interests through pragmatic cooperation. It is easy to foresee an increase in that coming out of this conference.
The gains will necessarily be limited. The purpose here is not to establish a new world order though foreigners may see it that way. We are not Artanian after all. But despite whatever hyperbole or mischaracterization occurs in the Yishelem funny papers, there is an opportunity here to make a strong concerted effort at regional solidarity and comity. And it also gives Kalistan a stake in the well being of our neighbors, something we have not felt in a very long time, again, excepting the Constituent Members of the Anantonese Empire. We have a reason to help them fight if they are attacked, because if they fall, we are next, in every case. This sense of purpose is in and of itself encouraging, which is why The National endorses Kalistan's participation at this conference in Egelion. We are better with our neighbors than against them, though we still have plenty of reason to be concerned. Cost benefit analysis says we go and participate.
And if you read this entire thing, hoping to see a nationalist tirade against Beiteynu, we're sorry. That, and the screencap of actress LaLa MacIntosh, was just the hook to get you to click on the article. Hey, what can we say? We do not pretend we above misrepresentation. The only difference between us and some Westerns who do pretend that is that we are honest about it.

Lady Renee Houston announces that the Royal Couple are expecting
"Her Imperial Majesty is due in March" announces Personal Secretary
Kaliburg, Grand Duchy of Ananto
September 10, 5703
Lady Renee Houston makes announcement to Reporters at House Ananto
Her Imperial Majesty's Spokeswoman, Lady Renee Houston, issued the following statement to the press:
Quote:"It is with great joy and elation that it is my duty to announce that Her Imperial Majesty, Empress Carolina II Ananto and His Highness, the Prince Consort Elliot Rosenfeld are expecting a child. The news was confirmed by Her Imperial Majesty's personal doctors, who examined her in her home, and gave her a due date of March 13, 5704 based on her progress. This is fantastic news for House Ananto, the Ananto Family, the Dynasty and the Monarchy. There will be an heir, if all goes well during the pregnancy.
"Her Imperial Majesty will continue her regular duties until the end of the year, when she will move onto a light duty schedule until she and baby are fully bonded. During this period, she will work from Cliff House and will not travel abroad. The Royal Family report that they do not wish to learn the sex of the baby until birth and wish to have as natural a childbirth experience as possible. Her Imperial Majesty and the Prince Consort are both excited and a little scared for the process, both being new parents, and ask for the people of Kalistan to keep the family in your thoughts and in the Light until the baby arrives. All well wishes may be directed to the office at House Ananto."
Lady Houston confirmed that during the pregnancy, Her Highness, the Princess of the Empire Nicolette Ananto-Collins is expected to relocate to Cliff House and will come and go from Kaliburg to carry on her representation of the Empire in Egelion. "Lady Ananto-Collins has been invited to stay with the Royal Couple during the pregnancy, and agreed to help as much as she is able," said Lady Houston. "While the Princess said her baby sitting days are behind her, she still wants the opportunity to be the 'cool aunt' she was before she needed to step into the role of Regent. So she will stay with Her Imperial Majesty in Kaliburg as long as she is needed." Dame Alice Bjorksdattir has also confirmed her intention to take a little time off work to stay with the Royal Family in Kaliburg as well, especially in times when the Princess of the Empire needs to be in Egelion. Dame Bjorksdattir was inducted into the Ancient Order of the Grey Smoke last year and is a close personal confidante of Her Imperial Majesty.
Lady Houston confirmed that the family believes that the child was conceived before they left Valruzia, where the newlywed couple went for their honeymoon. "Both Her Imperial Majesty and His Highness both believe it to have been then, given the dates provided by the doctors," she said. "The conception was planned and was successful, and both parents to be could not be happier."
The Empire congratulates Her Imperial Majesty, Empress Carolina II Ananto and His Highness Prince Consort Elliot Rosenfeld on their new family. The entire nation now awaits the next generation of the 5th Ananto Dynasty to be born.
