Secretary of State for Defence, Patrick Peterson has been an old face of the Labour Party’s right-wing flank. While the “Soft Labour” factions within the Labour Party have been content with the Prime Minister’s leadership, his handling of defence matters have left many unsatisfied. Following the National Labour Party’s electoral underperformance in 5712, these groups have begun pressuring Crown Street over changing the “direction and leadership” of the Ministry of Defence.  

The appointment of Patrick Peterson, 64 as Secretary of State for Defence seemed to be a move towards that direction, a self-identified “war hawk”, he pushed the government towards a higher commitment for national defence, often breaking ranks to vote with the Conservative minority on defence question while on the backbenches. The only reason why Mr. Peterson remains on the Labour Party’s benches and now sits on the front benches were through the intervention on his behalf of the Home Secretary, who protected his protégé from sanctions from the party’s apparatus due to his repeated breaks from the party’s whips command. 

As Secretary of State for Defence, Mr. Peterson addressed journalists on his first days at the Malvin Headquarters (Department of Defence’s HQ in Fort William), with him saying that the Department of Defence “would continue the path of professionalism” laid forward by his predecessors. His first statement wasn’t a break from his predecessor’s leadership, but he didn’t praise him either, signalling that “change was coming” to one of the largest departments in the Government. 

Immediately following his appointment, the new Defence Secretary sat down with Elena Clowback for an interview in the “30 Minutes” show on LBC, this short 5-minute-long interview, served its purpose of introducing him to the Luthorian public. During this, he exposed his views on the Ministry of Defence during his tenure as Defence Secretary, stating that, in his mind reducing the defence budget in “such a tough period internationally” might “not be the best move”.  

He moreover argued in favour of continued expansion and buildup of the Luthorian Armed Forces, specifically the Imperial Luthorian Navy, he said: “Now is not the time to be reluctant on our commitment for our national defence, throughout the world, instability takes root in numerous nations and human rights violations are becoming ever-more ordinary throughout the world”.  

“Our defence forces successfully defended our nation in New Verham and I do not see a world in which they wouldn’t continue to do so.” he said and endorsing a view shared mostly by the Conservatives, he lamented the “lack of international institutions” capable of tackling the new task ahead, one determined by the rise of “radicalism and extremism” throughout the world, he added.  

When asked about the compatibility of his doctrine with the Labour government’s PEAK doctrine, he didn’t have much to add. He pointed at the recent creation of the Luthori-Dovani Reconciliation Fund as a “positive development” - and didn’t seem to have viewed any hypocrisy in his view of “increased interventionism” with the “PEAK” doctrine, quite the opposite. 

“My view is that we need to defend both our sovereignty and the rights and privileges that all peoples in this world should have. We cannot sit idly as a regime kills its own population or places a risk to our nation. Both ideals are not mutually exclusive; they are merely an extension of each other on my end.” he stated. 

To conclude his interview, as he has been previous highly critical of the defence cuts, concerned with the status of the projects engaged by the military beforehand, he’s been asked about the current status of said projects, he stated that the defence cuts had “slightly slowed them down”, but were nonetheless continuing smoothly.

Following the end of Mr. Rupert Kensington’s term as the Governor of the Bank of Luthori, it fell upon the Chancellor of the Exchequer to appoint a new governor. Following a long process of vetting numerous candidacies, it has been announced that the government’s nomination to the post was Dr. Patrick Doll, a veteran economist now acting as an economics professor at the University of Northminster.  

Dr. Patrick Doll, 67, has long been considered as a potential chairman for Luthori’s central bank, but his interventionist credentials have drawn the ire of the successive Conservative governments. Doll has been a member of the Bank of Luthori’s Court of Directors between 5689 and 5702, when he resigned from the board of directors to “focus on teaching the new generation”, according to a statement issued by his family. 

Now – having been appointed as the Governor of the Bank of Luthori, the new head of the most important Luthorian financial institution has, for now, not officially announced his intentions as governor, only thanking the Chancellor of the Exchequer and the Prime Minister for their “wholehearted” confidence upon his leadership skills to lead the Bank of Luthori. 

Dr. Doll is a proponent of Kodonomics, seeing the central bank’s role as a vehicle for active intervention into the economy, if necessary. He argued in favor of numerous interventionist policy proposals during recession period, arguing that the Bank of Luthori’s shouldn’t merely be limited at the control over the pound, but be expanded to a more “proactive” role in Luthorian economic policy. 

Dr. Doll’s economic and fiscal philosophy aligns with Chancellor Joseph Alden’s economic policies. In a bid to stimulate the Luthorian economy, the Chancellor is tapping into deficit spending as a mean to both fund different government agencies and fund the Labour Party’s extensive social program. Alden’s criticism towards the government laid on the fact that the Labour Party ran the government “as the Tories did”, in his mind, the government was losing “countless time at trying at striking a balanced budget”, when the “state of our nation need the government to actually involve itself”. 

His plan would need to have some support of goodwill from the Bank of Luthori and Dr. Doll’s appointment does just that. His nomination was criticised by Conservatives who argued against the “politicisation of the Bank” through his nomination as Governor, slamming the Chancellor’s fiscal policies in the process.

Disappointment over failure to secure oil bid in New Englia sparks controversy on LP.

The recent failure from Luthorian Petroleum to convince the New Englian authorities about the Rossafada oil fields sparked controversy and debate among LP investors over this failure. Investors and government officials alike have begun searching for potential reason for the failure of the Luthorian bid to convince the New Englian authorities. Some blamed the “bland” LP plan for exploitation; some blamed the lack of alternative energy development plan for New Englia. 

All and all, all reasons were thrown to the company – as in to blame it for the unfortunate result. LP’s CEO Kim Ann-Myung (Ann being the Luthorian name – for specification) - expressed “solemn disappointment” at the recent bid loss, expressing support for “renewed investments” into the domestic oil industry. She said “We haven’t been competitive on this field, that’s a fact, now I’m personally seeing one pattern, the other corporations had the full support of their governments, ultimately leading to their victories [...] what is needed now is a renewed investment on oil,” she concluded. 

Mrs. Ann-Myung's comments were immediately criticised by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, who argued that the government “had provided its full support to the Luthorian Petroleum’s bid”, he moreover added that “comments such as these are merely trying to deflect from the real reasons for the failure of this bid.” 

Luthorian Petroleum’s stock at the Fort William Stock Exchange saw a dramatic downturn following the announcement of the bid’s result, with Mrs. Ann-Myung stating that this development “didn’t surprise her a bit”, as she and the LP reflects on the loss. Reports from the FWSE addressed that the LP stocks were down to £31.50, from £34.25, a moderate drop of –8.03% in one single day. 

It does reflect the lack of confidence that investors have upon the company, with many choosing to sell their shares out of fear. Investors and traders alike expect that this downward turn of LP shall continue for the rest of the week, although it’s likely to stabilise by Thursday with a return to “normal levels” by two weeks. 

“Oil is a very volatile market,” Patrick Strayman said. “Many investors are still vorried about the oil price due to Luthori’s reliance on the black gold,” he continued, but nevertheless added “the oil market has never been that stable before, no rogue actors have enough power to actually shake the worldwide oil market.” 

The disappointment over the failure of Luthori’s bid even reached the nation’s shipping corporation, which stocks and overall value saw a boost following the announcement of Luthorian interest in the bid, it was hoped that Luthorian corporations would have been used for transportation – if the bid was successful that is. SouthSeas’s CEO, Joe Patrick “acknowledged” reality but also expressed “deep frustration” with the whole ordeal. SouthSeas, ASC and MedShipping’s stocks also saw a decrease in the last day of trading. 

SouthSeas’ stocks declined by 1.03%, passing from £51.27 to £50.72, the Artanian Shipping Company’s stocks declined by 2.44%, from £46.22 to £45.09, just as examples of shipping corporations that were negatively impacted by the New Englian oil bidding process. 

Luthori’s banking sector was also slightly negatively impacted. Although the so-called “Big Five” Luthorian banks only reported “slight” or “insignificant” losses on last week. 

Kim Ann-Myung expressed “openness” at an insider debate within LP to understand the reasons for the bid’s ultimate rejection – a move aimed at “ameliorating our brand and learning from our mistakes in the future,” according to the firm’s chief executive officer. Luthorian government officials have communicated their intent on restoring a Luthorian naval presence on the Migrants’ Pass, following decades of inactivity of Luthorian naval forces in this perimeter. The decision was made by Defence Secretary Peterson who earlier this day announced that Luthori was conducting negotiations over the restart of the 5642 agreement over basing rights in Sholemberg. 

Calling it a “necessary endeavour” for national security, the Defence Secretary argues that the Migrants’ Pass “constitutes a vital lifeline" for Luthorian commerce and economy and as such, should have at least a limited Luthorian naval presence to protect its interests.  

The Defence Secretary also stressed Luthorian involvement into MATO operations in the Migrants’ Pass as part of his reasoning in favour of increased involvement in the area, he stated that “currently MATO does a lot to ensure security and stability in numerous areas, we can’t let our allies do most of the heavy-lifting while we are merely standing on our own – although we do have the capabilities to help.” He moreover added “we are in a collective security alliance, that means we ought to do our part too.” 

Military officials have announced on 5-point policy on the return of Luthorian naval forces in the area – the first point involved the arrival of the HMS Excalibur and the HMS Stephenson at Sholemberg. The plan involves the constitution of the new “Southern Fleet” centred around Sholemberg. The new fleet shall complement the two current fleets currently in operations. For the Chief of the Naval Staff, this new effort in national defence constitutes a “great national endeavour”, but one that in his mind, will “bear fruits” in the long-term. 

“It’ll strengthen our capacity to respond to outside threats alongside our allies,” he argued. Foreign Dep’t officials have also argued in favour of the negotiation process, one staffer telling LBC: “It’s simple, Sholemberg and the restoration of Luthorian naval presence in the Migrants’ Pass, are an important part of the administration’s defence agenda. The Migrants’ Pass constitutes one of Luthori’s main trading routes and one of the necessary entries into other continents – hence our interest at lending a hand to our allies in that matter.” 

Defence Department officials have stated that the Luthorian government’s move was also due to a shift in the larger Luthorian defence strategy concerning the Eastern Dovani Seaboard. One that aims to assert “multilateral regional cooperation” on security matters in the medium term.  

“It is still an unrealistic prospect as of now,” a Defence Office spokesperson recognised. “But we remain optimistic, that in ten, or twenty or even thirty years – we'll be able to enter more thorough collaboration endeavours with other Dovanian states in the medium-term.” he concluded. 

Luthori’s renewed focus on the Migrants’ Pass does represent a shift in the balance of power in the region, although it is one that is agreed to beneficiate MATO more than anything, as the Luthorians enter the Migrants’ Pass in a “collaborative effort” to “alleviate the security burden on its allies,” a statement from the Department of Defence concluded.

Catherine Shelby, CEO of Luthori's N°2 Auto Corp arrested on embezzlement charges.

Shocking news coming out of Fort William tonight. Olyster-Rohan Company CEO, Catherine Shelby has just been arrested at the Lucky Treasure Casino. According to the Fort William Metropolitan Police, Mrs. Shelby was arrested on embezzlement suspicions – according to the official statement from police sources, Mrs. Shelby embezzled around £4.5 millions in company funds for her own personal expenses. 

These serious crimes were revealed following an internal audit which revealed a serious gap in around £4.5 millions, which was widely believed to be due to misappropriated funds – the company’s board of directors immediately launched an internal investigation, which concluded that Mrs. Shelby, alongside some others purposefully misappropriated corporate funds for their own benefit. 

Today, Mrs. Shelby was arrested by the Metropolitan Police and faces embezzlement and fraud charges being pressed against her. 

Mrs. Catherine Shelby’s rise to prominence was fast and impressive, one of the youngest executives in the company’s entire history, coming into office at 43. Immediately hailed as one of the “rising stars of Luthorian business world” - following her appointment as CEO, her arrival as chief executive sparked the reignitatement of the company’s PR – as her appointment was shown as the symbol of a new era, one of success, growth and expansion, according to her own words. 

Unfortunately, ever since Mrs. Shelby was appointed 5 years ago, it seems that the honeymoon period came crashing down on her, with low sales, declining advertisement quality causing low public reviews on new products, unimpressive new products being released, with the quality being mediocre – at best, according to many, Olyster-Rohan Motors was slipping further and further from its main rivals at the Alchester Motor Company. 

This failure in leadership, and her seeming inability to turn things around, as she previously promised placed her at odds with the board of directors and investors. Coupled to this inability was her own personal behaviour, which was worsening day by day. Mrs. Shelby was reported to be more interested in “trivial pleasures” according to one collaborator than about her actual job. 

According to elements from the police, when arrested Mrs. Shelby was found in a private corner of the casino complex – in a VIP section. The casino’s chief stated that she was “granted” that privilege due to her “lengthy and repetitive” visits. It was later revealed by police sources, that according to preliminary inquiries, she had spent over £23 millions in this casino, an astonishingly high number that also drew their attention. 

According to Metropolitan Police chief, Sir Geoffrey Maximal, the charges pressed against Mrs. Shelby are “absolutely damming” - he stated the police continued its investigations as of now. He vowed to “enlightened the public with verified facts only” as the police continues its investigation. 

Mrs. Shelby has rejected journalists’ advance for a reaction following her arrest – with her lawyer, Mr. Joe Bather stating that his clients “denied any wrongdoings in her tenure as CEO of Olyster-Rohan and strongly rejects the charges brought against her.” Even with this defiant tone, it seems that her fate has already been sealed, as Olyster-Rohan's board of directors is expected to assemble to strip her from her powers and responsibilities as CEO of Olyster-Rohan. 

Deputy CEO Ted Chevalier has stated the internal investigation shall be “carried on” to find “potential accomplices” in her misdemeanour. Mr. Chevalier is widely expected to become Olyster-Rohan's acting CEO until a new one gets appointed. 

The company’s stocks at the Fort William Stock Exchanges plummeted. Reports stated the company’s stock value fell by –10.21% in merely a day, revealing increase investor panic in relation to the scandal.

Olsyter-Rohan Motors today announced that Ted Chevalier was to become the next CEO of the company, following the scandal that brought down former CEO Catherine Shelby.   

This scandal involved embezzled funds from company resources towards personal dispenses, Mrs. Shelby was arrested on November 26th, and her removal was officialised on November 27th, following an emergency meeting of the company’s board of directors. In an interim basis, Mr. Chevalier has been appointed as interim CEO on the same day and has been confirmed to his post one week later.  

His appointment comes at a very difficult time for the company. Following declining sales and the corruption scandal, investors' confidence on the company plummeted – with ORM stocks falling by 30%, going from £82.66 to £57.86 - revealing a deep-rooted crisis within the company, whose declining sales and collapsing confidence among investors reached a never-seen level. 

Mr. Chevalier addressed the latest controversies. The new CEO said that he was “sorry” following the revelations of his predecessor’s crimes while in office. He moreover added that under his leadership, there would be “great changes” brought to the company to ensure transparency and accountability for company’s higher-ups. 

“We must be an example. What enfolded here wasn’t an example, it was a total disgrace. A total disappointment to the company’s long history. Under my leadership, it’ll not happen again. It cannot happen again. Today, we are entering a new era, a zero tolerance on corruption will be enacted.” he announced to the shareholders in a speech. 

Mr. Chevalier’s address was well-received by investors, who sees his take over as a “nice break” from Mrs. Shelby’s disappointing performance in that same post, company stocks rose by a small amount, slowly recovering from the very important dip earlier that month. 

“Mr. Chevalier’s appointment brings some much-needed confidence into the company; it’ll be interesting to see how this evolves.” a senior economic advisor said.

Luthorian officials have stated that the Luthorian government had successfully reached an agreement with the Government in Sholemberg over the potential basing of Luthorian naval vessels in the area. 

Defence Secretary Peterson had indicated that Luthori entered negotiations with their government in 5714.  

“We are obviously very happy with how the negotiations were conducted, both parties agreed to the protocols laid forward by both governments in order to ensure a smooth collaboration between Luthorian military forces and civil authorities on the field.” one high-ranking Luthorian diplomat in Yishelem commented. 

Details of the agreement weren’t released to the public as of now, the Luthorian military preferring to remain “cautious” and “silent” in its communication – according to a military expert. 

“The Imperial Luthorian Armed Forces obviously aim at making Sholemberg the baseline of future Luthorian strategy in both Majatra and the Far East.” Brad Cooper said. He added that “Sholemberg represents a new, very important milestone in the Imperial Navy’s power projection capabilities, one deep rooted in MATO’s joint framework rather than independent.” 

“It does represent a very important milestone in our quest for global security, and we thank Sholemberg for their willingness and understanding of Luthorian security interests.” the Chief of the Defence Staff, General Craig Pennyworth stated. “Our base in Sholemberg will act the main base of operations for further Luthorian deployment in the area, alongside our allies – in a respectful and collaborative manner.” 

Luthorian plans related to the new HMNB Sholemberg aren’t yet known, although, one clear ambition of the Luthorians is to center the creation of a “Southern Fleet” centered around Sholemberg and the Migrants’ Pass to alleviate the mission of the current Luthorian Home Fleet. 

“We are currently studying the transfer of Luthorian naval assets from the Home Fleet towards a new command,” a top officer stated, confirming the government’s intentions. These comments were immediately rejected by the Naval Staff, which lamented the lack “of responsibility” of some of its members when it came to media statements. 

A press statement from Defence Secretary Peterson is expected to happen – with the Defence Secretary likely outlining the new development for the Imperial Luthorian Navy for the next ten to fifteen years.  

“Three fleets, each with a carrier battle group and each with their own subdivision of submarine.” according to military analyst, George Mitchell, it’s the likely future look of the Imperial Navy in the next few years. His argument? “It’s been a while since the Navy – and in fact, the entire military, has talked about ‘flexible’ command being a principle, decreasing the role that the Citadel plays in day-to-day running of combat operations worldwide. Now is likely the time to act on this policy platform,” he concluded. 

HMS Excalibur is expected to arrive tomorrow morning, as the first Luthorian vessel to arrive to Sholemberg, according to a statement from the Defence Office. 

Luthorian Ambassador to Amudim, Sir John Rabbin stated having "noticed" the central government in Yishelem of the success of the bilateral negotiations. This move was widely seen as a "goodwill measure" by Fort William towards Yishelem, as current arrangements between the different regional authorities with Yishelem do not force Luthorian officials to do so.

Investors at FWSE “welcomes” new global confidence in pound index – hails “new era” in global finance.

The Tel Bira Journal today reported the worldwide rating agencies had downgraded the Yeudi Shekel (YSK) and the Canrillaise Fleur (CFR) from their previous rankings, while at the same time upgrading the Luthorian Pound (LPD) through its index “Global Luthorian Pound” (GLP), the Vanukean Mark (WRM) and the Egelian Corona (ECA), with markets hailing a “new era” in global finance as the two foremost world powers in terms of finance and banking slowly, but steadily weakens in favour of new actors. 

“Countries rise and fall, that’s how it has been for centuries. Yeudi-Canrillaise dominion over global finance lasted for over 400 years, from its introduction through the breakthrough in bilateral collaboration between the two states in the 5300s, surviving even the weakening of the Canrillaise Empire and the collapse of Beiteynu as a united nation-state.” stated Peter McDornell, an historian specialising in the history of international relations and geopolitics. “What we are seeing through this downgrade isn’t merely just an economic decision, it’s a sign of a changing era, and with it, a changing world order, where neither the Beiteynuese nor the Canrillaise would dominate,” he concluded. 

In Fort William – while the symbolism behind this decision was largely understood, economic reasons prevailed, as the Canrillaise Fleur (CFR) lacked the long-time support of the Canrillaise economy, which has engaged in a continous decline for a long time now and lacked international credibility. To not be understood as “nobody trusts the Canrillaise Fleur”, no, quite the opposite, the Canrillaise Fleur, even as the Empire faded into the background geopolitically remained the main trading currency used within the infamous Yeudi Neset, through its preferred usage by both Yeudi and Canrillaise banks. 

While Yeudi banks remains currently stable in their worldwide dominance, they are facing competition from newcomers in the worldwide financial market. Canrillaise banks, on the other hand, faced a relative decline, caused by the home nations’ gradual collapse of influence worldwide.  

However, the Bank of Luthori while “welcoming” the recent increase in confidence towards the Luthorian Pound, called for restraint, calling credit ratings “very volatile” and, according to Bank of Luthori Governor, Dr. Patrick Doll “there is much to be done to confirm that position.”

Prime Minister Edward Holian-Keaty, following 9 years as prime minister and 16 years as Labour leader has marked the National Labour Party through his long tenure as party leader. Becoming head of the party in 5699, he led the party through a difficult period in its history, where it struggled to compete with the Conservative Party in general elections. Mr. Holian-Keaty suffered two electoral defeats in both 5700 and 5704 before successfully pulling off an unprecedented landslide victory in 5708. Invited by His Majesty the Emperor to form a government, the first Holian-Keaty government was appointed on April 1, 5708 (11. William 7).

The Prime Minister has today announced his intention to step down from his leadership role within the NLP, and as such, from the office of prime minister. Citing “old age” and “the necessity to pass the torch to a new generation”, the elder statesman, aged 71 has also indicated his intention of retiring from politics altogether following the 5616 general election, in which his long-held seat of Balercook will be up for grasps by other political formations. 

Unanimously, the Luthorian left raised in support of the now ex-prime minister, with cabinet ministers (former and current) unanimously celebrating and paying respects to the man who led the National Labour Party to two electoral victories in a row, after a long period of Conservative domination of the government. Former Health Secretary, Joe Kirkpatrick Jr stated that the loss of Prime Minister Holian-Keaty as party leader and head of government would leave a “enormous vacuum, which will be hard to fill”, current Justice Secretary Peter McGill said that “Luthori has lost a tremendous statesman, a remarkable leader and an amazing human being through a speech”.

While Labour closed ranks behind its soon-to-be replaced leader, other political reactions were more mixed, the Green Party leader, Nicole Hamfries commended the Prime Minister’s “heartfelt commitment towards social justice and a more equitable Luthori,” but nevertheless regretted his administration’s apathy at enacting reforms towards that end. Same comments on the side of the Left Party, while applauding his “long and arduous fight for equality and fairness”, reflected on his “failures” as Prime Minister, notably his “inability” to “fight the already bloated-off Luthorian military industrial complex”.

On the right, reactions were more muted, the HPP merely released a statement thanking the Prime Minister for his “long years of service to the nation” and wishing him well on his “future endeavours”, the Conservative Leader of the Opposition, Jake Sullivan (who replaced Patrick Simon as Leader of the Opposition in April 5714) addressed a “wholehearted statement” towards the Prime Minister, thanking him for his “long years of service towards the Luthorian Empire and its people” while stressing on the campaign trail that the failures of the National Labour government “weren’t suddenly removed as the Prime Minister goes into retirement.” He addressed the necessity for a “changing of the guard”, stressing the necessity for political alternance as Luthori slowly enters the campaign trail season. It is reasonable to state that the selection of the new Labour leader will undoubtedly impact the campaign in some way and Mr. Sullivan’s comments were already focused on the task ahead of him and that being the next general election.

In the National Labour Party, the process to select a new leader has already started with the declaration from Prime Minister Holian-Keaty, delegations from all provinces shall convene to elect a new leader after primary elections were held between Labour voters in each province. According to party rules, proportional representation is favoured for the leadership struggle in each regional election, and the threshold to be elected as Labour leader is to secure 1,052 delegates from the 2,104-delegate count nationally. If no candidates secure enough delegates to be elected as Labour leader, then a second round shall be held nationally to elect the leader between the two frontrunners.

Usually, this type of leadership election takes months, so it seems unlikely that the new Prime Minister will be selected in the next few weeks, although, due to the urgency of the situation as the threat of general election looms above the Labour Party, party leadership might be “willing”, at least according to insider statements to “speed up the process” of election.
