Museum of the People’s Republic opens in Kiego
26 April 5584

After two years of preparation, the Museum of the People’s Republic opened its doors to the public today in Kiego. With support from several private and international donors, the museum aims to provide a comprehensive account of the People's Republic of Ntoto, the socialist state that governed the country from the late 49th century. The opening of the museum has attracted significant attention among the public and from several politicians. Despite being an important period of the country’s history, the People’s Republic has a highly contested legacy domestically and internationally.

Ntoto’s socialist government came to power following a period of intense violence and disorder. Following a series of violent clashes between the government of Nzinga Ogoo and pro-democracy protesters, the country descended into disarray. Kiego was the scene of widespread rioting that led to hundreds of deaths. In this context, socialist militia groups activated to attempt to bring an end to the authority of then-President Ogoo.

After several years of conflict, a collection of socialist armed groups led by Birom Ouattara established complete control of Ntoto in 4888. In the following decade, the socialist government undertook a programme of nationalisation and collectivisation that had a lasting impact. According to contemporary reporting, these policies were enforced using brutal means in many parts of the country. At the same time, they supported a rapid increase in Ntoto’s living standards by numerous measures.

Across three floors, the museum presents an account of all aspects of life under the People’s Republic. The economic and social impacts of the socialist government’s policies are central to the museum. Daily life during the period is examined too. The socialist government exerted control over almost all aspects of society, including the arts, business, leisure, and sport. Through a combination of first hand testimony and historical sources, the museum attempts to present a balanced account the experience of the Ntotoan population at this time.

Notorious militia leader Namiri Jackson arrested in Nkada
5 March 5585

In an official statement issued this afternoon, the government of Ntoto has announced the arrest of militia leader Namiri Jackson in the northeastern town of Nkada. Jackson was reportedly apprehended as part of complex military operation conducted overnight. According to official sources, five people were killed in the operation and a member of the Ntoto Defence Force sustained minor injuries.

Jackson is the leader of the infamous Bonde-Okda Liberation and Defence Council (BOLDC). Formed over three decades ago, the group originated as a community militia with the stated purpose of defending residents of the region from intercommunal violence. Since then it has seized control of a large area in the northern portion of Bonde-Okda. Though information on the group is difficult to verify, Jackson is reported to have taken de facto control in 5572 following the killing of his brother Kokolo.

In the international press, Jackson has become notorious for the brutal nature of his rule. Prior to his arrest overnight, he had been wanted for war crimes, including the use of child soldiers. Jackson would order extreme retaliation against civilians deemed to be disloyal. According to unconfirmed accounts, he would order the massacre of the entire adult population of a village and the child population conscripted into his militia.

Jackson’s arrest is part of a series of targeted military operations by the government of Ntoto. Since acceding to the presidency last year, Kembo Umoja has directed a significant increase in funding to the armed forces in an effort to re-establish control of the northeastern region of the country. For the past fifty years, the area has been devastated by a series of protracted armed conflicts involving dozens of diverse militia groups.

Umoja’s efforts to restore central government control over the region have been mostly successful. After years of stalemate, the Ntoto Defence Force has achieved a series of important victories in the past six months. Despite the success, the recent campaign has attracted controversy domestically and internationally. Increased expenditure on the military has meant a reduction in public spending in other areas such as healthcare, which critics say has contributed to an increase in malaria deaths.

Hundreds escape following successful jailbreak at Okandja prison
10 August 5587

Hundreds of prisoners are believed to have escaped from Okandja prison in western Ntoto after an armed group attacked the complex overnight. Conflicting reports from police sources and government officials place the number of escaped inmates anywhere between 80 and 600. A police spokesperson confirmed that eight officers had been killed in the attack, which began at around 3:00 am local time.

Okandja prison is the largest high-security prison in Ntoto. It is located in a remote area in the southern portion of the Bonde-Okda region. For many years, it has been used to house high-profile prisoners, including anti-government rebels. Human rights organisations have consistently raised concerns about the treatment of prisoners in the facility. Former detainees have reported the widespread use of torture and sexual violence by prison officers.

Though there has been no official confirmation at present, the jailbreak is believed to have been orchestrated by the Hounwe National Army, an ethno-nationalist rebel group primarily operating in northern Ntoto. If this proves to be correct, it is a major blow to the government of Kembo Umoja. Okandja is located deep in government-controlled territory and it would alarming if a rebel group was able to perpetrate an attack of this kind.

Government declares complete military victory in civil war
14 October 5604

President Kembo Umoja has issued a statement declaring “complete military victory” over the Ntoto National Progress Coalition (NNPC). For almost seventy years, the country has been devastated by a related series of conflicts between government forces and a collection of rebel groups. According to the president’s statement this afternoon, this long period of conflict is over after the government captured the northern city of Dekoto.

Civil war has ravaged Ntoto for generations. Since he was originally elected to the presidency in 5584, Umoja has made eliminating rebel forces the primary objective of the national government. In spite of setbacks over the past two decades, he has achieved this principal aim. Whether this provides a period of relative stability remains to be seen but the significance of the achievement should not be understated.

Domestic and international analysts are divided on the future prospects for the country. The conclusion of the civil war does not mean an end to violence. Even as the government has closed in on the last remaining areas of NNPC control, there have been isolated attacks by rebel groups across the country. Last month, at least 13 people were killed in a car bombing in the capital. The ethno-nationalist Hounwe Protection Group claimed responsibility for the attack.

Umoja pledged that the defeat of rebel forces is the “beginning of a new future for the people of Ntoto”. Beginning in his first presidential term, domestic and international observers have criticised the targeting political opposition figures by the police. Umoja has retained a stable level of popularity with the public primarily due to his success in restoring government control though. Now that the conflict appears to be over, Umoja will have to reckon with a fresh set of political challenges.

President Kembo Umoja hospitalised with kidney failure
29 November 5609

Ntoto’s president Kembo Umoja has been admitted to hospital in Kiego. According to government sources, the president is experiencing kidney failure and his condition is “serious”. In recent weeks, the president has rarely been seen in public amid ongoing concerns about his health. Umoja’s daughter Mary issued a statement on behalf of the president’s family requesting that their privacy was respected at this difficult time.

Umoja has served as president of Ntoto for a quarter of century, winning five election victories across that period. In recent years, he has faced limited political opposition from within the country, and he won over 85 per cent of the popular vote in his most recent election victory earlier this year. Human rights defenders have raised repeated concerns about the treatment of journalists and opposition figures though.

As recently as February, it had been speculated that Umoja would step down from the presidency at the end of his previous term. In the past eighteen months, his son Ariel and his vice-president Henry Kasa have taken on many of the president’s everyday duties, including delivering policy speeches and attending local events.

If the president’s health worsens, it is likely to lead to political instability in Ntoto. The end of the country’s civil war in 5604 has been followed by five years of relative peace. Umoja’s unparalleled power and strong personal appeal have prevented any kind of political manoeuvring or upheaval. If this were to change, it might create a power vacuum as various individuals and factions jostle to replace him.

Protests intensify after Ariel Umoja placed under house arrest
6 February 5610

Protestors gathered for a third consecutive night of demonstrations in Kiego last night to oppose the detention of Ariel Umoja by the Ntotoan authorities. Umoja, the eldest son of former president Kembo Umoja, was placed under house arrest alongside his Valruzian-born wife Małgorzata on Wednesday evening, following allegations of corruption. The move has been criticised by his supporters as an attempt by President Henry Kasa to eliminate opposition.

Kasa, who served as the country’s vice-president for over a decade, acceded to the presidency upon the death of Kembo Umoja at the end of last year. Under the constitution, he is entitled to serve the remainder of Umoja’s five year term. Despite his formal status as vice-president, Kasa was not widely perceived as Umoja’s natural successor. Ariel and Małgorzata have a loyal and committed base of support among the general public.

When the demonstrations began on Wednesday evening, the police warned there would be an “unwavering response” to any violent action by Umoja supporters. Despite the stern rhetoric, there have been no reported arrests in relation to the protests. Reports suggest they have been overwhelmingly peaceful.

As the public pressure on Kasa increases, the Ntotoan military leadership is reportedly considering its position. Throughout Kembo Umoja’s presidency, he was fiercely supported by the military due to his heavy investment in defence amid the country’s long civil war. Since his death, military leaders have appeared uninterested in the political contest between his potential successors. In recent days though, the Chief of the Defence Staff was reportedly concerned by the threat of the growing political instability.

President Kasa resigns under pressure from Ntotoan military
11 February 5610

Henry Kasa has announced his resignation as president following discussions with the leadership of the Ntoto Defence Force. In a statement issued this morning, Kasa said he would step down at the end of the week. Ariel Umoja is set to be inaugurated as vice-president before then, to allow him to succeed Kasa as president upon his resignation.

Kasa’s decision follows two weeks of instability prompted by the detention of Umoja by the national authorities. In the following days, there were protests across the country in support of Umoja, whose father Kembo served as president for 25 years. The decision to place him under house arrest alarmed many within the government too.

As public anger continued to grow, it became clear the police and the armed forces would not back the president if the protests became violent. Earlier this week, Kasa’s advisors reportedly started trying to convince him to step down. In the end, the decision was made for him. Last night, the Chief of the Defence Staff informed the president he must resign, or the armed forces would take matters into their own hands.

Ariel Umoja is now likely to serve the majority of his late father’s five year term. Though he has been involved in frontline politics for over a decade, it is not yet clear how Umoja will govern. Like his father, he has a close relationship to the country’s military leadership. Defence spending will continue to be a central concern for the government. Aside from this, the priorities of the new administration might not become clear for some time.

Ntotoan Parliament suspended by President Ariel Umoja
3 January 5615

President Ariel Umoja has suspended parliament in response to “political instability caused by opposition politicians”. In a public address earlier today, President Umoja claimed members of parliament were deliberately obstructing his legislative agenda, and jeopardising the functioning of the Ntotoan government. For an initial period of three months, Umoja has personally assumed all parliamentary powers.

The suspension follows months of tension between Umoja and opposition lawmakers. Last year’s general election delivered a divided government. Umoja won a comfortable re-election in the presidential vote but the opposition New Popular Alternative won a plurality in the Ntotoan Parliament.

Earlier this week, the legislature voted down Umoja’s latest budget proposal. Since his ascension to the presidency, he has been dogged by corruption allegations. New Popular Alternative parliamentary leader Liel George pledged that his party would not approve the spending bill unless the president introduced fresh legislation to tackle the problem. Umoja had earlier threatened “decisive action” if the “unconstitutional obstructionism” did not end.

Following the suspension, human rights groups have reiterated long-standing concerns about democratic backsliding in Ntoto over the 50 years. Despite the opposition’s success in the last parliamentary election, the vote was marked by widespread reports of voter intimidation. In the presidential election, Umoja’s principal rival was disqualified by the Supreme Court.

In the short time since the president’s announcement, demonstrators have gathered in the capital to demonstrate their opposition to the decision. Hundreds of people have gathered waving the national flag and chanting anti-corruption slogans. A small contingent of counter-protestors have gathered too. No violence has been reported yet but there is a significant police presence.

President Umoja calls snap parliamentary election
22 February 5315

Seven weeks after his suspension of parliament, President Ariel Umoja has called an early election. In an effort to end almost two months of political crisis, the president announced the election will be held before the end of March. In a televised announcement, he said “the Ntotoan people must have their voices heard”.

Umoja’s announcement follows a prolonged political standoff between the government and the political opposition. After last year’s general election, there has been a period of divided government, owing to the success of the opposition New Popular Alternative in the parliamentary vote. The party’s leader Liel George has demanded decisive action against corruption in the Ntotoan government but Umoja has described this as partisan obstructionism. The deadlock peaked when the opposition refused to approve a new budget proposal at the end of last year.

Since then, the president has faced pressure from across the political spectrum, and there have been protests throughout the country. In a major blow to his authority, the Supreme Court last week ruled Umoja’s suspension of parliament was unconstitutional. Despite the ruling, the legislature has not yet resumed functioning.

Though opposition politicians have welcomed the announcement, there are still concerns about the fairness of the upcoming election. Umoja’s decision appears to be aimed at restoring legitimacy to his presidency, but his supporters have faced persistent accusations of voter intimidation. New Popular Alternative continue to top most opinion polls, but it unclear how this will translate when voters head to the polls next month.
