Kalopian and Baeguk Military Personnel Kidnapped in Solentia.

March 5594

In a double blow for intervention forces, Ahmadi State have kidnapped a number of Kalopian and Baeguk soldiers. Four Kalopian soldiers, reported to have been intelligence specialists, were kidnapped while on a mission to the north of Oda in the mountains of Saspain Wilayat. Their disguises were rudimentary, including local dress and fake beards, and none of them are believed to have spoken the local Dudmani language, relying on speaking Majatran in a remote rural area where Majatran isn't widely spoken. The Kalopian soldiers have been paraded in an Ahmadi State propaganda video. If true, and some details remain to be corroborated, this seems to be yet another failure of the Kalopian intelligence services.

The reported Kalopian soldiers captured by Ahmadi State

The single Baeguk soldier has been named as Inŋəktəmkūrə̄ Kusin and it is reported had only been inside Solentia for two weeks. The Baeguk are dissimilar from any other ethnic group in Solentia and visibly stand out from the local population. Baeguk has recently committed four hundred soldiers to support the Kalopian invasion of Solentia, which had led to Ahmadi State directly targeting Beaguk in the region.

Jaish-e Ahmadi Seeks Advanced Weapons.

March 5594

The legitimate government of Solentia has raised taxes in areas under its control in order to increase defence spending to purchase more advanced weapons for Jaish-e Ahmadi. It is believed that agents of the Solentian government have travelled to other nations to try and purchase anti-air and anti-ship missile systems. Jaish-e Ahmadi has been hindered in its efforts to resist the Kalopian invasion because of the Air Supremacy enjoyed by the Kalopian Armed Forces. Similarly Jaish-e Ahmadi have been powerless to prevent a Kalopian maritime blockade of the Solentian coast.

International Community Offers Criticism of Kalopian Policies in Solentia

March 5594

Although Kalopia has enjoyed support from some nations for its intervention in Solentia, a humanitarian disaster, increasing talk of a famine and huge number of refugees has led to some nations criticising Kalopia's actions. Both Likatonia and Zardugal have highlighted concerns about the plight of Solentia's civilian population, and even Kalopia's ally Lodamun has focused its recent efforts on increasing humanitarian assistance. Whether the concerns of the international community will prevent further Kalopian violence, who can tell.

Famine in Solentia - Potentially Hundreds of Thousands have Died - Is this what Genocide looks like?

August 5594

It has been the worst winter in Solentia in generations. Along with severe cold weather which has isolated many rural areas, the country has had to deal with  a disastrous famine triggered by a Kalopian maritime blockade of all major Solentian ports. Kalopian control of central Solentia has crippled domestic trade, preventing the movement of foodstuffs internally, but the blockade has massively reduced food imports. The international community, with the exception of Lodamun, has done almost nothing to prevent the famine despite months of warnings from humanitarian agencies.

Rural areas in Solentia are just about surviving the harsh winter, it is the cities that are suffering the most due to the inability to import food because of the blockade. One aid workers stated;

Quote:Lifting the sea blockade would almost immediately solve this crisis. What Kalopia is doing is deliberately starving a civilian population.

As always it is the most vulnerable who are suffering the most with children and the elderly particularly vulnerable to malnutrition.

Donated supplies just aren't enough

Solentian Government Attempts to Alleviate Crisis

The government of Solentia has attempted to alleviate the crisis with increased spending on Health and Social Services, Food and Agriculture and Infrastructure and Transport. However, the Solentian government does not have access to its capital Oda which remains under Kalopian occupation, which also means the government does not have access to gold and foreign currency reserves which could've been used to purchase essential food supplies. Additionally, Kalopian airstrikes have destroyed much critical infrastructure including roads and bridges which means in many parts of Solentia the only way to move is on foot on with horses and donkeys, which further restricts the ability of much needed supplies to be moved around the country.

Kalopia to be investigated for war crimes and genocide?

A prominent international human rights lawyer has said the Kalopian government should be investigated for war crimes. In a released statement she detailed her ambition to have the Kalopian government and military leadership prosecuted for war crimes;

Quote:The definition of genocide is the "destruction of a nation or of an ethnic group by means such as the disintegration of its political and social institutions, of its culture, language, national feelings, religion, and its economic existence". What Kalopia is doing in Solentia amounts to genocide. They continue to prevent the government of Solentia from performing its duties, they have deliberately targeted the Solentian people and its infrastructure through indiscriminate airstrikes and for over a year they have waged direct economic terrorism against the people of Solentia through a deliberate strategy of starvation of sixty million people by disrupting Solentian imports of food. The entire Kalopian government and military leadership are war criminals who should be prosecuted for the crime of genocide.

Mass Protests in Kalopian Occupation Zone - Kalopians exploiting female Solentian refugees

August 5594

Kalopian occupied cities in Solentia have seen large scale anti-Kalopian protests continue. The Kalopian occupation forces are said to be rattled by the continued opposition from Solentian citizens. Despite the Kalopians now occupying areas in Solentia since January 5593 they have yet to build any public support for their actions inside Solentia. The Kalopian occupation government has not put a single Solentia in office in any of the occupied territories, and continues to rely on Kalopian military forces to provide security in the occupied territories.

One leadership figure within the local Solentian opposition to Kalopian occupation added the following;

Quote:They treat us as an occupied people. They shut us of from our families in the rest of the country. They still apply a curfew. Not one Solentian is involved in government of the occupied territories. They have not told us when they are going to leave, and I swear upon the Prophet Ahmad they are humiliating our women, stealing artefacts from our museums and taking gold from our banks. They are desecrating us with their continued occupations.

Mass protests against Kalopian occupation forces have continued in Kalopian occupied areas.

Kalopian military accused of running prostitution networks using refugees

Disturbingly the latest protests have been triggered in part by wild rumours that Kalopian soldiers are running prostitution rings inside the zone of occupation. The rumours detail that women from refugee camps are being taken to Kalopian military barracks in return for cash and food.

One Kalopian officer offered the following insight

Quote:I don't get these people. Without being asked or invited into Solentia we liberated them from Ahmadi fanatics by killing their brothers and sisters. We haven't even made them get involved in government, we're doing all the governing for them. We've protected them from the starvation policies we've enforced upon the rest of Solentia. We've shared some of their museum pieces with private collections back in Kalopia, keeping them nice and safe. We've even provided some of their women with jobs to provide us with comfort. What more could they ask for?

Before the Kalopian officer could continue he was yanked away from the interview by a more senior officer.

Impact of the Kalopian invasion of Solentia on refugees and cultural minorities

August 5594

Refugees

While as much as 20% of the population of Solentia (perhaps as many as 12 million people) remain internally displaced, it is thought that up to one million Solentians have taken refuge outside of Solentia. This includes 400,000 people who have been offered official refugee status in neighbouring Kalopia, the principal architect of violence in Solentia since their illegal invasion in 5593, although the real figure of refugees in Kalopia may be even higher. Separately hundreds of thousands of refugees have made their way to neighbouring Kafuristan and Istalia, with tens of thousands seeking shelter even further away. Notably Lodamun, which wishes to avoid an influx of refugees into Lodamun, has proposed paying Deltaria to take Solentia refugees.

Ethnic Minorities

Solentia is a nation with many ethnic minorities. As would be expected some of these have been badly affected by the conflict. Of note many ethnic Kalopians (forming ~1% of the Solentian population) have been at the forefront of those refugees clamouring for relocation to Kalopia. Similarly ethnic Istalians have also sort refuge in neighbouring Istalia, which has been made easier by the end of the conflict between Kafuristan and Istalia in late 5591, but also somewhat more complicated by the division of Istalia into three separate sovereign nations. The Kansari, who are the remnant of the former Artanian colonial powers in Solentia are also thought to have taken advantage of dual nationality rules to leave Solentia in large numbers.

Other minority groups have been less likely to leave Solentia. Most Majatrans live in the northern Wilayat of Solentia which have been largely unaffected by violence, and the Ashkar in the western Wilayat have also been notably resilient through the conflict with Human Rights Watch observer noting their villages and tribal groups have lagely remained intact.

Hosian Churches left untouched by Ahmadists

Despite the activity of hardline Ahmadist groups such as Jaish-e Ahmadi and Ahmadi State, Hosian Churches have remained largely untouched by violence. Hosian minorities have largely been protected inside Solentia, particularly as Ahmadists recognise Hosians as fellow "people of the book". Religious leaders from the three primary Hosian Churches (Aurorian Patriarchal, Terran Patriarchal, Apostolic Church of the East) have all publically declared their opposition to the Kalopian invasion of Solentia and their desire for peace to be restored. The Churches are all believed to have contibuted funds towards buying food to alleviate the Kalopian starvation tactics.

Kalopian soldiers desecrate Solentian Mosques

On the other hand Kalopian destruction and desecration of Mosques has been widely reported. Many airstrikes seem to have deliberately targeted Mosques, whilst within the occupied zone there have been numerous reports of the widespread desecration of Mosques by Kalopian soldiers. This is all the stranger as officially almost half of the population of Kalopia are Ahmadists. However, in the view of one academic;

Quote:This is an example of "othering". The Kalopians have looked down upon Solentians for centuries. Although many Kalopians are notionally Ahmadist, it is known that Kalopians typically take a more relaxed view towards religion than their Solentian neighbours, hence why Kalopia has more relaxed social policies on drugs, alochol and prostitution. Given the Kalopian targeting of civilians in airstrikes, Kalopians effort to starve the entire Solentian population, the Kalopian looting of Solentian museums and the use of Solentian women as prostitutes, the vandalism of Mosques is all in line with the Kalopian genocide being perpetuated against the Solentian people.

Government of Solentia calls elections

August 5594

The government of Solentia has called for elections in September 5594. Despite the ongoing famine and conflict with Kalopian invaders, a spokesman for the government detailed that "in light of attempts at peace negotiations, the Solentian people must be clear in their resolve to withstand the Kalopian genocide being enacted upon Solentia".

The logistics of elections will be significant in light of the many issues afflicting Solentia, not least the fact that roughly one quarter of the Solentian population live under Kalopian occupation and will not be able to participate in any election. The head of the Solentian Electoral Commission (SEC) has detailed the SEC has major issues with funding an election and distributing ballots but "Akim willing elections will proceed".

Ballots being prepared in Solentia.

The election is gearing up to be contested by two political parties, the Ahmadi Union which was formed in 5593 by all armed groups opposed to the Kalopian invasion and the moderate Ahmadi Peoples Party, which has taken no stance on keys issues of the day such as the Kalopian genocide in Solentia. Mullah Yummah will be standing once again, although this time for the newly renamed Head of State title, Emir of the Faithful.
