Consul-elect Artemis Gavros says he will tackle "decades-long" Selucian issues

After a long and difficult campaign, the recently born "Patriotic Revolt" has reaped its fruits, and it has now become the biggest political party in Selucia, sweeping all other political parties and becoming the dominant force in the national Senate as well as the three Commonwealths. Its leader and now  Consul-elect Artemis Gavros is waiting for his running partner Flavinia Mactator to be appointed by the Senate as his co-Consul, although this is just a mere procedure since his party holds now all the Senate seats.

Patriotic Revolt (known in its native language as Sollevatio Patriotarum) has been described by political commentators and the media as populist, socialist, cultural conservative, social progressive, left-wing populist, left-wing nationalist, and left-conservative. The latter label is used in part due to its far-left economic positions and right-wing stances on some social issues, which have been as being popular among anti-establishment and right-leaning voters. In response to these descriptions of the party as far right or socially right-wing, some political scientists say that the party still has a "left-wing profile", sometimes being considered as left-wing authoritarian, due to its conservative stance on some cultural issues such as immigration.

Now, Mr. Gavros says one of the most urgent things to tackle in Selucia is political dissatisfaction, fueled by decades of political inactivity and the impoverishment of the Selucian working class. As such, he has already announced that his new government plans to propose a new law that will establish cuotas for senators according to age gaps, in order to motivate youngsters to get involved into politics. He has cited "the political old elite" as one of the main reasons for Selucia's lost of importance in the modern world, citing the times of In Marea's rule and government as the "most brilliant" of Selucian recent history, and has said he will attempt to put Selucia back to where it belongs, hand in hand with other heavyweights in Terra's multipolar order.

The new government of Selucia, in the hands of Artemis Gavros and his Patriotic Revolt party, has made clear from the very beginning its intention to turn Selucia into a military power, capable of facing the adversities that a continent like Majatra may pose and to be able to face the challenges that may arise.

In an appearance before the media during a visit to the main military barracks in the province of Oleria, Defense Minister Adulescens Vitalis announced the intention of the ministry he heads to immediately start looking for investors and companies willing to help with the reform of Selucia's army, which, according to his own words, was in a “deplorable” state when Patriotic Revolt came to power.

“It is unfortunate the state in which for decades the governments of our once glorious nation have left our armed forces. Rebuilding them stronger must be one of our top priorities, and we want to make it clear that we in this government will work hard to keep it that way. Therefore, the first thing we want to do is to work to have a fleet that is the envy of the entire world, as befits a nation with a long seafaring tradition such as our islands. From this very moment we are working together with national arms companies for the construction of several combat ships and submarines, and for this purpose we also want to call on those who are interested in this project, and we would also like to make an appeal to those countries that would like to collaborate with us in this project. Those who want to do so will know that they can count on the gratitude of our nation, and Selucia is a country of people that do not forget.

We know that this is a very long term project, it is not a matter of a few years but possibly decades, but we believe that the important and the main thing is to lay the foundations and then start building from there, and that is what we want to do”.

Selucia to establish new controls to the Majatran Sea

The Selucian government had called the media this midday for what was described as "an announcement of the utmost importance". The address was announced to be given by Defence Minister Adulescens Vitalis, probably the most popular minister in the current government, who is seeking re-election in the elections to be held next year.

The following is the speech made by the Minister:

"Thank you all for coming. The Selucian government has taken a decision which, in the framework of the upcoming state visit of the Pontesi authorities to Selucia, we consider of utmost importance, as it is an issue that will also be partly discussed in these bilateral meetings at the highest level.

The Selucian government has taken the decision to establish the Selucian Authority for the Majatran Sea (ASMM, Auctoritas Seleuciana Maris Majatrani), which will be under the control of the Ministry of Defence and will deal with all matters related to the passage of transports to and from the Majatran Sea that require passage through Selucian waters.

It is important to remember that Selucia fully controls one of the 6 passages and one of the only two that run entirely through a single nation - with Badara controlling the other; it also partially controls two other passages, together with Pontesi and Cildania, being therefore the nation of Majatra that has sovereignty over the largest number of accesses. Therefore, we consider this matter of utmost importance and one of the great priorities of this government, a government that cares about the national sovereignty of our country. The passes that Selucia controls, furthermore, are the most important for Artania, since they control the shortest routes to many of the nations of the rest of the continent of Majatra.

For all these reasons, we consider that it is time for Selucia to assert its strategic position. In the coming months, the ASMM plans for the new control over these passes will be detailed, and it is within the framework of these plans that Pontesi's visit takes on special relevance, since a fluid relationship with the neighboring nation is one of the keys to the new future of trade through the Majatra Sea."

Special elections of Selucia - New elections announced for January 5623

Following a period of national inactivity and stagnation, several Senators have decided to put an end to this. The dissolution of the Patriotic Revolt has led to the formation of Factiō Populī Seluciānī (Selucian People's Party), and provoked the apparition of new parties. The FPS, led by Nerovius Dillectius Dominius, has presented itself as a continuation of the Patriotic Revolt, albeit more moderate, embracing cultural conservatism, Selucian nationalism, Selucian populism, and left-wing economics. Dominius has stated that his plans are to turn Selucia into a more relevant, diplomatic, democratic and revitalised nation, without abandoning that which makes Selucia different and unique. 

Consequently, the Adflātūs Aureī (Golden Revival) was formed by Oviusta Quitius Cicus with a similar purpose to the FPS, albeit a different perspective on how to achieve it. The AdAu focuses on heavy economic liberalisation, "cultural syncretism", strengthening democratic institutions and values, as well as seeking to improve infrastructure, encouraging tourism, and promoting global free trade. Cicus positions himself and his party as an alternative to parties that promote either traditionalism or modernisation, instead seeking to push for the strengthening of Selucia's politics, economics, culture, and global relevancy. 

Inspired by the perspectives and goals of these two parties, but leaning more towards the FPS, the Factiō Innovātiōnis Populāris (Popular Innovation Party) has been founded by Vivaniana Equilla (Equilla). The FIP is the first party led by a woman. Equilla proposes more radical left-wing economics (but stilll within a capitalist framework), especially the expansion of a welfare state and worker co-ops. The State should have an active role in pushing for Technocratic elements (emphasising modern science, research, and digital innovation). It has also been described as socially progressive (being open to further modernisation of culture, and pushing for more inclusive definitions of who is "Selucian"), although in a gradual, slow, and meticulous way so that mistakes from the past are not repeated (hinting at the Modernī). The stance of the FIP towards the Principate is clear: they find that, the way in which the Principate stood in support of traditions and history, it left Selucia behind technologically, affecting not only the natural and progressive development of the Selucian culture, but also of its economy, politics, and warfare capabilities. They seek to revitalise the economy through radical and modern improvements of city infrastructure and technology. 

Logically, these parties would catch the attention of those more loyal to traditional Selucian elements, spawning the Fideī et Mātriae (Faith and Motherland), formed by Marcus Paturcius Silvianus (Silvianus). The FeM is described as right-wing on social and cultural issues (supporting traditional Selucian family structures, religious morality, and having a deep reverence for Selucian antiquity). They propose a mix of populist economics (favouring protective tariffs and worker protections) with national conservatism. It's strongly militarist and seeks to continue the legionary structure of the Principate's army. While they have been compared to the Regressīvī, Silvianus has claimed that he is "deeply disgusted" by the civil war and its outcome, even if the FeM agrees with some positions from the Regressīvī. They often demand tougher immigration laws, strong defense budgets, and more public celebration of “classical virtues.”, clashing with the previous parties constantly and making them hugely controversial.

Seeing the dangers of this variety of options in the parliament, and how the same mistakes of the past are starting to be recreated, the Factiō Concordiae Cīvium (Civic Harmony Party) has been created by Sertortius Abuccius Nicus (Nicus) out of the desire to avoid repeating the factionalism of the Regressīvī–Modernī era. The FCC has been described as centrist, but with mildly progressive economics. It proposes civic republicanism (citizen participation and civic virtue) with moderate cultural conservatism (wants to preserve certain classical and fundamental Selucian traditions) in order to cater to all the parties. Nicus has stated that the FCC emphasises consensus-building and is open to big coalitions, as well as negotiating and cooperating with all parties.

The elections have been announced for January 5623, when the previous Senate building's reconstruction is planned to be finished. In the meantime, the different parties will try to win their voters, for one of the first elections in centuries of Selucian history that is so tense and uncertain.

January 5623 Elections of Selucia - FPS and FCC emerge as victors

The elections of January 5623 have been finally held, with a participation of 94%. The FPS, led by Dominius was the most voted one with a 26% of votes, resulting in 55 seats. The FCC of Nicus was the second most voted with 20% of votes, resulting in 43 seats. The AdAu of Cicus received 18% of votes, resulting in 38 seats. The FeM of Silvanus got 16% of votes, resulting in 34 seats. And in last position, the FIP of Equilla received 14% of votes, resulting in 30 seats. As can be seen, these elections have been very divided, with little difference between the results of each party - except for the FPS, which got a significant difference of votes. 

The system of the Republic of Selucia establishes that the leaders of the two most voted parties become the two Consuls of Selucia, with the power to veto each other's decisions. Nonetheless, it also establishes that, while a government must be made between the two most voted parties, they are in no obligation to form coalitions in the Senate. Considering that the FPs and FCC do not manage to make up half of the Senate by little, this means they will have to negotiate with other parties bill-by-bill, especially seeing that the ideological differences between each party are wide and only the FCC is willing to negotiate with any of them to an extent. Either way, this means that the new Consuls of Selucia are Dominius of the FPS and Nicus of the FCC.



Their victory has been celebrated throughout the streets, and the voters of FPS seem to be glad that it was FCC the second one most voted - mostly due to their will to negotiate and compromise. It is very likely that the FPS' policies will go ahead, as some will meet the support of FeM and others of FIP, and most of the FCC - being AdAu, the third biggest force, the only one left behind and discontent with the results due to sharing little in common with the FPS, despite having common goals.

New times for Selucia as FeM and FPS emerge as victors

As a consequence of two electoral cycles of insignificant policies and inactivity, unable to pass most bills due to polarisation inside the Senate, the people have effectively voted for FeM with a 30% of votes and the FPS with a 27% of votes.  Silvianus and Dominius, thus, emerge as the new Consuls with a majority in the Senate. While there are some differences between the two parties, both have a fairly similar objective and ideology, which should make it possible to enact reforms more easily than before and, most importantly, as Silvianus has stated, "make Selucia glorious again". The FCC has been, on the other hand, the most negatively affected in these elections, dropping to last place with only 8.6% of votes.

Selucia announces control over the Migrant's Pass

As a direct member of the 3rd Point Federation, it is in Selucia's interest to protect, defend, and strengthen the 3rd Point. In the last few decades, the 3rd Point has seen a huge decline in inactivity and influence, causing the Migrant's Pass to become an "everything's allowed" area, to the detriment of the 3rd Point. As a consequence, after the new government of the FPS and FeM, this government has announced that Selucia will, from now on, assume control of the 3rd Point for as long as the rest of members do nothing about it, and promised a strategic plan of action to improve the situation of the Migrant's Pass as well as to benefit the 3rd Point Federation as a whole. Thus, Silvianus announced:

The Senate, with the approval of the two Consuls, has recently passed a new plan of action to improve our involvement in the 3rd Point Federation and strengthen our control of the Migrant's Pass - not under Selucia, but the 3rd Point Federation. The plan we have divised will consist of different measures taken over a span of 2-3 years, in order to properly stage a transition and ensure further stability. The first measure, which will happen as soon as possible, is increasing the military presence of Selucia in the Migrant's Pass. Under the article A5 of the Migrant Accords, each member nation must send a minimum of one fleet to the Migrant's Pass. Up until now, Selucia had been getting minimally involved in the sea, however, due to the inactivity of the other member nations, Selucia will be sending more than one fleet, effectively creating a maritime barrier on the westernmost point of Selucia.

Over the following months and years, we have planned to impose stricter, although not exaggerated, tariffs over foreign products being traded throughout the Migrant's Pass, as well as imposing taxes for passage through our maritime barrier. Needless to say that this will benefit the 3rd Point Federation greatly, and not just that, but will ensure no other nation becomes richer and powerful at our expense. Then, afterwards, we will enforce further restrictions on military units inside the Migrant's Pass without the permission and approval of the 3rd Point, following the article A6 of the Migrant Accords, especially seeing the current instability and inactivity of not just our region, but Majatra as a whole. Lastly, it must be clarified that direct members of the 3rd Point Federation, as stated in the article A5 of the Migrant Accords, will be exempt from any and all restriction, tax and tariff imposed in the following years in the Migrant's Pass. Additionally, we will reduce these restrictions leniently on signatory nations that aren't direct members, encouraging other nations to sign the Migrant Accords and remain if they want to continue using the Migrant's Pass.

Selucia announces new and stricter tariffs and fees in the Migrant's Pass

Following the announcement in April 5631 of a plan to ensure more control and security over the Migrant's Pass by Selucia, the government has entered the next stage of introducing new and stricter tariffs and fees in the Migrant's Pass, to encourage both revenue for the 3rd Point, and revenue, which will become functional starting from January 5632. The following table shows the proposed tariffs and fees for any vessel travelling through the Migrant's Pass, as well as discounts and exemptions:



In order to discourage the usage of the Migrant's Pass for military fleets of non-allies and members of the 3rd Point, the ones allowed and approved by the 3rd Point to travel through the Migrant's Pass will be taxed the most. Similarly, as the table states, 3rd Point direct members are exempt from any tax and fee. Ratifiers that aren't direct members, however, have a 50% discount on all fees. As to not detriment allies of direct members that aren't ratifiers nor direct members, these will have a 25% discount. This last one, however, doesn't count allied ratifiers, and thus doesn't accumulate with the 50% discount.
