A Lodamese Frigate is destroyed by Lourennaise Aggression; Williams agrees to ceasefire

The Kalistani Foreign Minister, Orenthal Williams, stated this afternoon that the sinking of a Lodamese Frigate by the Lourennais Navy was enough bloodshed, and signalled his willingness to come to terms on a permanent ceasefire in the Ananto Straits.

"Lodamun was on patrol to help defend Kalistani ports and shipping during the Straits Crisis.  They were not here to become targets.  This crisis has gone on long enough, and we are interested in resolving matters once and for all.  The Kalistani military is confident that with our soon to be ratified Trilateral Treaty, as well as the complete rebuilding of Kalistan's navy and military, we have once again returned to a key position in the middle of the Anantonese Ocean, and feel confident in our ability to defend ourselves from all comers."

Williams mentioned that he would accept any reasonable offer to talk.  "Our hope is to settle this issue once and for all in a way that acknowledges the grievances of other nations while still prioritizing Kalistani National Security through the straits.  We will be happy to talk and work on resolving these matters."

Williams also noted that the Ministry of Defense has called a unilateral halt on patrols on the northern and southern limits, and return vessels to protection of Kalistani Ports and Assets in the Straits.  "Enough innocent blood has been spilled."

Lodamun asks for convention to settle the situation

President Devis (2nd GDR of Lodamun) has stated today that the 2nd Fleet is returning home after a stay and a struggle in the Anantonese Ocean. She follows the signal of the Kalistani Navy.
Orenthal Williams, Kalistan Minister of Foreign Affairs, has expressed his wish to resolve the matter in the Anantonese Ocean. With the Kalistan fleet extracted from the troubled area, he shows he's serious. Lodamun has followed that same move and has ordered all of Lodamuns warfleet to return to port. The only military vessels left at sea would be those controlling the EEZ.
President Devis wants to see results soon, and has asked all parties to come together and discuss a solution to prevent such issues in the future:
"I would like to meet my colleagues at a convention to outline a treaty to assign several area in the ocean to the influence or under control of one or more nations. I would like to ask the Kalistan government to set a meeting on the island of Ananto, being centralized between the different nations. There should be a discussion on the Ananto Straight for sure."
Lodamun has also contacted the Lourennais authorities to thank their navy for their help with the search-and-rescue operation after the sinking of one of our precious frigates: "Ships can be replaced, but the emptiness in families hearts will never be restored. Yet the warm feeling of hope comforts us, knowing that their still is such a thing as galantry towards those in distress."

President Devis has called for a one-sided unconditional ceasefire, which should give all parties involved the opportunity to settle the situation.

discussion to create a dureable peace started

Minister of Foreign Affairs James McAvoy and Minister of Defence Ahmad Roose have arrived in Lourenne to represent Lodamun at a peace conference.
Minister McAvoy will defend the cause of Lodamun at this conference. It is yet unclear what his orders are, but former statements made by the President indicate that Lodamun is willing to pay a reasonable price to ensure dureable peace in the Ananto Straight and the Anantonese Ocean in general.

Carrier Strike Group Heads To New Base in Kalistan As Part of Tripartite Accord
New overseas home gives Vanukean Fourth Fleet Significant Naval Presence throughout Anantonese Ocean

Elements of the Fourth Fleet carrying out its mission of observation in the Anantonese Ocean.

February 4414 - Vanuku's fourth fleet is set to move to its new overseas base in Kalistan over the next few weeks as part of a groundbreaking diplomatic, economic and security accord.

The powerful strike group, which is headed by the super carrier HVMS Kesprka will be housed at the new Bozo River Training Facility on the north east coast of the island state of Ananto, giving it enhanced projection capability throughout the Anantonese Ocean.

Despite being the smallest of Vanuku's super carrier formations, the Fourth Fleet still consists of a substantial carrier air wing (eight squadrons), cruisers, destroyers, frigates, corvettes, submarines and associated support craft... and would be the envy of most nation's navies. In recent months it has been carrying out observational operations in the Anantonese Ocean, refuelling and resupplying at sea.

All these tasks will now be carried out much more conveniently at the deep water base in Kalistan making the logistics of carrying out all-year round operations thousands of miles from Vanuku much easier. The fleet will also have access to KALNAPECO refueling facilities at Port Sweedes and Kalistani Naval Shipyard facilities at Port Devon for repair and refitting if required.

Rear Admiral Adlé Jezküs, Commander of the Fourth Fleet, has already met with members of the Kalistani Ministry of Defence to inspect the large section of the base allocated to the fleet and to fine tune requirements. As part of the accord, Vanukean personnel, believed to number around 7,500, including a Marine Corps detachment, will be governed by Kalistani national law for the entire duration of their stay on Kalistani soil.

The deal forms part of the Kaliburg Trlateral Accord - which has been agreed between Vanuku, Kalistan and Selucia. It draws the three nations closer in terms of trade, cultural and education exchange and military co-operation, although all three signatories are keen to stress the treaty is not a formal alliance between the nations.

The signing of the treaty brought to an end Foreign Minister Rnúf Ashur successful trip to Kalistan. Before heading back to Wiel he said: "We must congratulate our Kalistani hosts and the Selucian government in working so closely with us in developing this significant treaty. We look forward to the many economic and cultural benefits this will bring and the enhanced diplomatic and security relations that have been forged.

"We also thank the Kalistani government for providing a superb overseas base for our Fourth Fleet. This gives our navy a significant platform from which to carry out all operational missions required many thousands of miles from home."

Barajas to lead Peace delegation to LourenneGovernor of Odufaray moves up in profile
Eshar, Odufaray District
April 4, 4414

Governor Ana Barajas, one of the early (re-) Organizers of the SPoK, prepares to fly to negotiate an end to the Straits Crisis

The Socialist Governor of Odufaray, Ana Barajas, will fly tomorrow to Valois, Lourenne to meet with delegations from Lodamun, Kazulia and Lourenne.  The goal of the meetings:  To end the Ananto Straits crisis which has plagued safety and Security in Kalistan over the last six years.  Though it provided the impetus for Kalistan to return to a traditional orientation with regard to the economy and the security of Kalistan, it came with a fairly heavy toll.  More than 100 Kalistani lives were lost, including more than a dozen prisoners held in Kazulia, two Destroyers, and nearly a dozen militia LAFA craft, in addition to the cuts in trade and threats to supply in the Straits between Mainland and Ananto.

The accidental destruction of a Lodamese Frigate signaled the potential to escalate the war into a regional conflict which would drag regional powers in, and Lodamun, Lourenne and Kalistan called for an immediate ceasefire rather than expansion of the war.  Kalistan has accepted the Lourennaise offer for peace talks in Valois, and Barajas was tapped by the Foreign Ministry to lead the Kalistani Delegation.  This will be her first such mission, but the Government feels that Barajas is ready.  Additionally, word has it that President Johnson-Bennots is planning to retire after this term and a successful negotiation could open the door for Barajas to move up in the Party.

Barajas will leave tomorrow with full authority to negotiate peace in the conflict with Lourenne.  The Government has made it explicit that she is to not trade Kalistani Sovereignty in the Straits for concessions.  "We will do what we can,  And are certainly open to removing all restrictions on commercial traffic,"  Barajas declared.  "But Kalistan will never agree that the Straits shall become highways for the offensive militaries of the world again.  This is far too serious an ask, and it was what this war was about in the first place.  Kalistani Security is imperative in Kalistani Waters, and is far above the convenience of any foreigner on the list of Kalistani Priorities."

Barajas will leave Kaliburg tomorrow morning on the first direct flight to Lourenne since the Crisis began.

Kalistan's Barajas arrives in Lourenne; Immediately peppered by ReportersBarajas prepared for tough negotiations ahead

Governor Barajas steps into the Terminal in Valois and is immediately challenged with pointed questions

Governor Ana Barajas, at the head of Kalistan's peace delegation arrived in Valois for the anticipated peace talks over the Straits Crisis.  She and her team did not make it through the gates before eager reporters from Canrillaise language papers began peppering her with questions as to whether or not Kalistan was going to reopen the straits, if she thought reparations were in order, whether there is any possibility of peace while matters leading to the war remained unresolved and so forth.

Her response, after failing several time to speak over the gaggle of reporters was delivered in perfect Canrillaise:  "Nous ne sommes pas ici pour négocier avec nous-mêmes. Nous verrons plutôt ce que propose Lourenne et nous négocierons de bonne foi. Je n'ai pas d'autres commentaires pour la presse en ce moment."*  The reporters, taken aback by her apparent mastery of the language, fell silent and let the Kalistani proceed to customs.

*Translation:  "We are not here to negotiate with ourselves.  We will, instead see what Lourenne is offering, and we will negotiate in good faith.  I have no further comment for the Press at this time."

Focus: Retro-FuturismA Fashion, but more than that; A Sound whose time has (finally) come
Kaliburg, Ananto District
May 24, 4414

A new trend has caught a segment of Kalistan's Youth.  The trend, which is mostly associated with a particular type of music that has been developing over the last few years dubbed "Retro-Futurist", or RF for short, has also inspired websites, fashion, and clubs.  In Kaliburg alone, there are no less than 10 "retro-futurist clubs" which are associated with the movement, and which are responsible for the spread of retro-futurist culture, art and fashion.

What is Retro-Futurism?  John "Zap" Rogers, 32, of Kaliburg, who has a specialty show at Kalistan National University that features Retro-Futurism, describes it this way:  "Retro-Futurism is like, if you remember the past, and how they thought the present was going to be today, they had all these weird ideas about how we were going to be all robots and having jetpacks and flying cars and all the music was going to be this weird syntho-ambience that had this really thumping bassline, but had all this weird synthesizer stuff playing around it, so you could still dance to it, but it wasn't hard, and...  its basically what the past thought the future would be.  We're basically representing the Present of an alternative timeline.  A Modernity that never happened.  Can you dig it?"

The song "Can't Get you Off of my Mind" by Pop/EDM Artist Kelly Minelli, widely hailed as the first true, and greatest RF tune of all time, turns 17 years old this year.
Both the style and the sound are archetypal for the modern Retro-Futurist Movement.

RF fashion aesthetic features many facets.  "Some people like to dress up as robots," said Rogers.  "I don't know.  You gotta be pretty deep into it to do that.  The women, especially among the fans, but not so much the artists, really over-emphasize their sexuality with a lot of spandex and sheer clothes that you can basically see through in bright lights, and the men try to wear just outlandish, bizarre clothing with over the top shoulder pads, lightning bolts and sequins.  I'm into it for the music, but the culture around RF shows is definitely an acquired taste.  It's definitely all about sex and drugs.  Most of these people are dusted to the eyeballs.  But the musicians tend to be a lot more chill.  They know they are providing the soundtrack for a million Kalistanis to trip and/or f--k to."

RF Bands have already made their mark on Kalistan's music scene.  The country has had some type of retro-futurism in popular music in years past.  Most of the bands who have played "L Night" at the Ganjam could easily be described as proto-retro-futurist.  Using weird costumes, heavy synthesizers, and dance beats these "L Night" bands have contributed heavily to the sound and the aesthetic of their 45th Century descendants.  "Oh yeah, this band, you probably never heard of them, Louisie Sue and Dave," said Rogers, "they played at the Ganjam like three hundred years ago, but they were basically doing this stuff too...  They were on a LOT of drugs though, so I'm not sure how much of it was intentional.  But yeah it was really ahead of its time."

Louisie Sue and Dave, a huge band among acid eaters in the 42nd Century, are revived as "Proto-Retro-Futurist Legends"

True RF music is not directly descended to experimental electronica of bands like Louisie Sue and Dave.  "I suppose you could put RF in the EDM category," said "Tierama" Sue Daniels, a member of the Retro-Futurist band "12 Second Toaster."  "We have played EDM concerts before.  But, you know, we've been doing this for 10 years, and over that time, the sound, well, the whole scene has changed.  People show up now in these weird robot costumes.  They're way far ahead of the music with some of these clothes.  They have these tricked out MOCO cars that are made of stainless steel, and have all these lasers on them when they show up to our concerts nowadays.  It's strange how far some people are taking it:  We're just trying to jam."

A RF car, modified from a MOCO C-3, and made with stainless steel;  The Modifications alone cost more than the original car

Daniels continued:  "You could say our music is now less EDM, and more like ambient-dubhop.  As you can tell, my voice is very smooth.  There can't be any sharp sonic edges.  Even the bass, which is produced on the sequencer there, has to sound like its playing next door.  Our band has a drummer, who does the percussion and the sequencing, a keyboardist who presents something like an uninterrupted modulating tone behind the music, another keyboardist, whose job it is to use the moog modulator to make these crazy zips and zaps and whirls and such that you hear in the background, and a third keyboardist, who is in charge, mostly of synthesizing the melody and the instrumentation.  We have a guitarist, who lays down a nice rhythm, and we have a horn section.  If you listen to our music, not only do we have the elements of EDM, but also emo, reggae, and hiphop all rolled into one.  And I sing both in Luthori and Egelion in all of our songs, and we bring in this cute little girl who whispers Canrilaise on our tracks.  The whole thing is suppose to be real sexy, you know.  Music to get your groove on.  You know, music to really give it to your girlfriend and/or boyfriend and/or wife to..."

"Tierama" Sue Daniels, of the RF band "12-Second Toasters" at last year's Ganjam

RF albums are almost all concept records, meant to be listened from start to finish.  "Yeah, there's not a lot of singles on the records," said Rogers.  "The artists are often opposed to gaps, so a Retro-futurist record doesn't usually lend itself to playing piecemeal on the Radio.  Which is the benefit, I suppose of specialty shows like my own.  I play full records from start to finish.  The good thing is:  These bands are almost all electronic and digital, but they are musical perfectionists and record on analog.  They use a lot of meth and a lot of MDMA.  It's amazing that they make such awesome music."

Former EDM artists Devon and Waterfall made the move to RF two years ago, to great critical and fan acclaim

RF bands have really made their mark on Kalistan's music scene in recent years.  The RF invasion of popular music began in earnest about 5 years ago.  Since then, Ganjam has featured RF bands for 8 of the last 20 nights over the last five years.  A RF band has yet to close out the concert yet as a head-liner, but it is expected that if retro-futurism continues its dominance in Kalistani Pop, that opportunity for any one of the 40 major Retro-Futurist bands currently on the charts will not be long off.

Crucificado Pelo Systema to Headline the 4415 Ganjam, in High Bong Neveras

Ganjam dates for this year have been set by the Show organizing committee.  OrgComm spokesperson Jill Fisher-Bennots made the following announcement

Quote:"As part of our new effort to let all Districts host the Ganjam, this year's festival will return to the ancient festival grounds at High Bong, in Neveras.  The dates of the festival are set for September 16-22.  If you do the math, that is 5 nights, not our standard four.  This year we will include a pop/electronica night specifically for those who like to dance, and do other things, I suppose, but we will expand the lineup to acknowledge the changes in taste in Kalistan's musical connoisseurs."

Wild Egrets, in Concert last year, will headline L Night at this year's Ganjam

The show will include the now standardized International Music night, where bands from around Terra will be invited to take the stage and jam.  The Second night will be the normal Legacy Showcase, which will be headlined by the famous jam band trio "Sulari Express", which have topped the adult contemporary charts for 40 years, including their most recent #1 in 4412 "Gettin Up There."

Day 3 will feature Reggae and Dub, with Roots Reggae supergroup Jah Kyare and Dub artist Mastermind headlining from Sunup to Sundown, and Night 3 will be the new Pop/Electronica showcase night, and the lineup will include teen sensation, Mica Elemental, and will be co-headlined by RF favorites 12-Second Toaster and Devon and Waterfall.  Night 4 will be the classic L Night, with psychedelia on full display as Acid Rock masterminds Wild Egrets headlining.

Finally we will close the Festival on Night 5.  Throughout the day punk and alternative rock acts will be featured, including up and coming Ananto ska-punk band "The Socialistics" and Alternative Rock/Reggae quintet Tourist.  The festival will be closed on Night 5 with the return of Alternative to the Headlining spot.  Progressive Metal band Crucificado Pelo Systema will Headline the show with their unique blend of Math Rock, Sludge and Baroque sensibilities.  It is bound to be a mosh fest for the ages.

Dub artist Mastermind will be featured on Day 3

Tickets are on sale now.  A Ticket for all five days will cost 145 KRB, though the final two days shall be free, as usual.  And as is the case, ODEN will be on hand as a concert cosponsor.  The ODEN tent will premier three new strains of Indica from new fields in Suldanor and Vrassa Districts, that are said to produce a Heady high that's smoother than most commercially available strains.  Additionally, a new tweak to ODEN's LSD this year is said to extend the trip from the standard 12 hours to 16 hours, with added Vitamin C molecules attached to the crystal.  Tickets are expected to sell out in a matter of days.

Foreign Ministry Drafts New ODEN TreatyODEN II is significantly updated to expand Articles for Kalistan
Kaliburg, Ananto District

FM Williams announces a new ODEN Treaty:  "2 is Dead" he declares

The Foreign Minister of Kalistan, Orenthal Williams today announced that his office had finally completed the new ODEN Treaty, which the Government has been seeking for several years.

Quote:"I'm happy to report that, as of this afternoon, ODEN II is dead.  It will be replaced by a new document which keeps many of the liberalized features of II for international Signatories, but adds new provisions sought by both the Party and ODEN-Kalistan which specifically govern the ODEN-Kalistan Branch and its relationship with growers and chemists here in Kalistan.  It also officially acknowledges ODEN's long unspoken supply to international black markets in countries with strong Drug prohibitions.  The language prohibits ODEN's supply of these black markets only in nations where such distribution is explicitly forbidden by International Treaty to which Kalistan is a Party.  All other nations are fair game.

"Finally, and most importantly, the New Treaty explicitly forbids competition between subsidiary branches.  If ODEN in Country X distributes something locally, ODEN in country Y is not allowed to supply that market.  This guarantees that the ODEN subsidiary controls supply and distribution of all drugs within its own scope domestically, and abroad, International ODEN manages distribution at agreed upon levels and prices.  III is a much more comprehensive Treaty, and sets ODEN up for international expansion.

"We hope all drug exporting nations will join ODEN so we can end this cutthroat competition for inexpensive, extremely high quality recreational drugs, therapeutic phamaceuticals, and paraphernalia.  Those interested in joining ODEN should ratify the ODEN III Treaty as soon as possible, and then produce new inventories of their national production under their subsidiary branch of ODEN, so that we may begin to set distribution and pricing for international trade.  These are exciting times for ODEN."

The National Assembly has already moved the new Treaty to a vote, along with a provision which abrogates the old Treaty, first signed in 4056.

Details of Draft Treaty on Ananto Strait leaks to the Press
Kalistan agrees to allow shipping of all nations, Other Nations must keep their ships out of the Strait

Valois, Lourenne
April 7, 4416

A copy of the draft Treaty on the Ananto Strait Conflict was leaked to the Republic yesterday.  Granted, this is merely a draft, but the Kalistani negotiator, Ana Barajas confirmed its authenticity before the Republic went to press with it.

The features of the Treaty bind Kalistan to freely allow all peaceful civilian traffic through the Straits unhindered, and to remove all porting restrictions put in place at the start of the crisis, to including restoring neutral port status to Kalistani commercial ports.

In return, other nations agree to not enter the Strait with their warships, without either express permission from Kalistan, or a Treaty that allows freedom of movement within Kalistani National Territory.  Other states will be bound to recognize the exclusive sovereignty of Kalistan out to 20 nautical miles from Ananto's shore.

The accord will end official hostilities between Kalistan and Lodamun, and the governments of Lourenne and Kazulia, and form the basis of a more solid relationship between the smaller nations.

Barajas said she is hopeful that other nations, especially Kazulia will get on board with the Treaty, but will be satisfied if the smaller nations sign it, so that Kalistan can begin mending its relationship with its immediate neighbors.
