Her Imperial Majesty, Empress in Waiting Carolina-Katherine Michelle Ananto-Connor has officially debuted in formal Kalistani Society this week. A gala was held for the young Monarch at Kaliburg's National Theater, and was attended by the who's who of Kaliburg Society, arts, letter and music. The event featured a presentation ceremony, a large and lengthy reception and several formal announcements of large donations to various philanthropic and charitable organizations across Ananto and Kalistan. It also featured a formal dinner, toasts, and live music from the Kaliburg Chamber orchestra.

Her Imperial Majesty was obviously the center of attention at the Debut. She was escorted by the young son of the Count of Senvias, Martin Tinley, 18. Mr. Tinley is a friend of one of the Empress' school mates, and requested to escort the Empress at her Debut via his father, the Count. He will be joining Regular Armed Forces in October, and will begin training as an artillery officer. The two youngsters reportedly had a good time together during the evening, where the Royal House Protocol had to be suspended by the Princess Regent, for Mr. Tinley so he and the Empress could dance together.

The dinner for the ball consisted of a fresh garden salad, followed by breaded and pan fried cod with a side of lemon, rice pilaf and broccoli, with tofu for the vegetarians. Desert was a fresh fruit sorbet. Drinks were consumed freely throughout the evening. The Debut also featured the Empress in Waiting's first informal audience, where she listened to the Kalistani Dukes present her with a large financial gift of more than 15 Million Imperial Rubles, on behalf of the Ducal Council. She thanked the Kalistanis for their gift, and stated that it was her wish to donate the money to the National Aquarium in Dulnerstaad, on behalf of the her people in Kalistan. The Aquarium will use the money as an endowment to continue its work to restore aquatic habitats and species in and around Ananto. Other gifts received were donated to the Princess of the Empire's Million Trees reforestation program, which is still ongoing, and a very sizeable donation to the Kalistani Council for the Fine Arts, which helps fund both the National Theater in Kaliburg and the Imperial Opera in Sulari.

The party marks the moment in the Empress in Waiting's life when she officially becomes a public figure in Kalistan, may be photographed and is eligible to sit for interviews. It also has traditionally marked her formal arrival into Kalistani Society, where she has immediately moved to the head of the Social order in the Capital. "It's pretty exciting when a new monarch to be makes her debut," said society columnist Tony Brighton. "in a lot of ways, when someone Her Imperial Majesty's age moves up and into society, we see a generational shift. It's prestige based, but Empress Caroline's friends just automatically move to the front of all lines. Everyone suddenly wants to know those who know her, who can get close to her, who can tell her things.

"It's about influence peddling really," continued Brighton, "and those of us who cover events like this get a front row seat to all the intrigue and gossip and schemes of all these movers and shakers in society all of a sudden trying to befriend some 18 year old so they can pass a message to the Empress. It's thrilling, and maybe a little scary, especially if you are in the middle of the feeding frenzy of influence that usually accompanies generational changes like this, where those who were important yesterday for like 30 years, suddenly become not important or relevant at all, while those who, yesterday nobody ever heard of, or much worse, talked about, is now suddenly the center of the entire universe: That creates chaos, and those of us on the outside get to watch a lot of old slights and scores get settled while these upper class people work it out. They ignore the press, which is just as well, because we get access to all of it when we aren't a threat to their little world."

Now that the Empress in Waiting is a public figure, her appearance will cause an immediate stir wherever she goes. But she will also be constantly sought after, and, to a largely unfair degree scrutinized. "Her Imperial Majesty, the Empress in Waiting is in a unique position that we haven't seen for a very long time," said Brighton. "She is very much an Empress, but until her majority, she is an Empress in name only. The real power still lies, for the moment, with the Regent, who has more or less made it her life's goal to shield her young niece from the public eye. She has a lot of power to do so, for sure, but at the end of the day, she had to issue a statement ahead of the Debut that for the next two years, the Empress is still a minor, and harassment or attempts to humiliate her in the press will fall under lese-majestie. Most of the papers have agreed informally to embargo any news or images of unflattering conduct by the Empress in Waiting, but something may happen within the next two years which could be very embarrassing for any monarch or damaging for the Government, and it is more likely due to the Empress in Waiting's age. So that will be a bridge to cross when or if we get there."

For now, the transition into adulthood doesn't change much for the Empress in Waiting, politically speaking. She is now allowed to attend informal audiences with the Regent, and will be permitted to travel in an official capacity outside of the Empire. She still not not formally possess any fiat authority, nor can she formally participate in most decision making of the Government, though it is widely believed that her profile within the National Government is expected to dramatically increase over the next two years until she reaches her Majority, acquires her full style, and can dictate Imperial and National Policy by fiat. At that time she still will not be vested with absolute power: She will still need to complete her National Service, and then has expressed interest in going to school, either for linguistics or philosophy, or both.

For now, Her Imperial Majesty is a 16 year old girl. She still has homework, and teen drama. She still strives to carve her own path in a world controlled by the adults around her, and she still wants to find a place with her peers. Like any kid. But this one is also now the acknowledged head of a large pyramid of influence and authority called formal Kaliburg Society, among which dwells the wealthiest, most powerful, most connected individuals in Northern Seleya. The Debut ball was very successful, Her Imperial Majesty presented herself very well, and she made her Aunt and Grandmother very proud.
