Sovereign Valruzia and Forward Valruzia agree on new coalition government

The minority cabinet will rely on Our Homeland's support

A surprising twist following the latest elections. In just a couple of weeks, Sovereign Valruzia and Forward Valruzia have reached a government agreement that will have the external support of the Yeudi Our Homeland party.

Sovereign Valruzia, which until now had provided external support to Roksana Parzych's communist government, will thus return to the chancellery, and Forward Valruzia will hold both the vice-chancellorship and the vice-presidency of parliament, whose presidency will fall precisely to a deputy from Our Homeland.

Forward Valruzia’s leader Fryderik Konik, who will become Vice-Chancellor, described the agreement as “a pragmatic solution to a fragmented Sejm voted by Valruzians, and a necessity for Valruzian society as a whole" adding that his party would ensure the government “remains balanced, reformist, and anchored in democratic values". Our Homeland also offered a public statement, with its leader Celestyn Boruta emphasizing that his party was “not entering government” but would provide external support conditional on “the new government's commitments to protect religious freedoms, combat discrimination and maintain institutional respect for all minorities", while they acknowledged that presiding over the Sejm was a "huge step for the party and what it represented".  

Political analysts view this agreement as one unusual governing formula that not many saw coming after the results of the 5690 Valruzian elections were announced. While Sovereign Valruzia and Forward Valruzia had already ruled together, the experience – under the leadership of then-Dignity and Progress leader Faustyna Sabala, who became Chancellor of Valruzia, in 5665 – brought afterwards a huge parliamentary majority for the KPW in the next elections. This time, Dignity and Progress has been left behind, replaced by Our Homeland, whose main ideological points are outside the traditional left-right spectrum, and sends a political message at the same time. And now, it looks that the nightmare for the KPW is being repeated again, as they've been caught off-guard by the agreement once again. Its leader and current acting Chancellor, Roksana Parzych, described the agreement as “a disappointing betrayal of the working-class coalition that SW had pretended to support” accusing Barela of “turning his back on progressive reforms in exchange for power”. She also warned that her party would “vigorously oppose any rollback of social protections” and expressed her disappointment at "yet again another SW betrayal" under its new leadership.

Meanwhile, the far-right nationalist Valruzian Alliance reacted with sharp criticism as its spokesperson and acting leader following the resignation of Bianka Turczyn after the bad election results, Florian Czarnik, accused the new coalition of being “held hostage by minority interests” and denounced the role granted to Our Homeland as “a gross imbalance in representation”. Czarnik went further, warning that the arrangement would “erode Valruzian cultural identity” and promising “relentless parliamentary resistance". In the same sense expressed itself Workers’ Vanguard, calling Our Homeland's kingmaker role “deeply troubling". More surprising was a rare reaction from Sovereign Valruzia's founder and former Chancellor Szymon Nowik, who did not openly criticized the agreement but made clear that Forward Valruzia already proved to him not to be "a suitable candidate in national matters".

With 328 votes in favor, Barela's candidacy was passed by the Sejm after a really heated debate, as he heads now to the Presidential Palace to inform President Urszula Pawlik of his election. It is expected that the full composition of the new government will be announced in the following days.
