Summary: Humanity at Work is an extensively researched history of Seko's economic development, from the first permanent settlements until the arrival of the modern co-operative economy and its origin in the interrelated labour and religious movements of the 4720-30s. Later in the book, Kono argues that the international community needs to shift its focus to look at the underlying assumptions of the free trade system – "the unrestricted pursuit of self-interest and egotism." A co-operative economy, Kono argues, demonstrates an alternative model of economic and social exchange based on solidarity and reciprocity, "in which economics is an extension of a humane society."
