Election 5693: Cantalamessa set for a third term

A reformist continuity that however no longer seems to persuade the progressive-liberal electorate, which is increasingly looking to the center-right

ROMULA - The 5693 elections have been a new and important test for the Coalition for Change, which has been at the power for thirty years and led for the past ten by the Greens' Movement, led by Minister Secretary of State Marina Cantalamessa. Despite a very limited physiological decrease, the coalition emerged victorious once again, confirming a solid majority in the National Congress and restoring internal balance thanks to the growth of the Democratic Socialist Party and the New Communist Party, which regained support at the expense of the MdV. The Greens, however, remains the alliance's most popular party, maintaining the center of gravity of the progressive front.

Unlike the 5688 elections, which were dominated by cultural, immigration and security concerns, these elections saw a marked return of the economic vote. Pushing the electorate in this direction were, of course, the initiatives of the second Cantalamessa Government and the already announced upcoming projects of the left-wing coalition, which in recent years has focused its agenda on welfare reform, with the introduction of the UBI, the overhaul of the tax system and the national monetary policy. And this renewed debate on the sustainability, fairness and modernization of the Istalian economy has also drawn liberal forces back to the center of the political arena, where they have indeed achieved significant growth.

Coalition for Change (MdV + PSD + PNC): 245 seats

The Coalition for Change (MdV + PSD + PNC) thus retains its parliamentary majority, albeit slightly reduced compared to 5688. The PSD and PNC are making strong progress, benefiting from the return of social and economic issues and the consolidation of a young, progressive electorate. In particular, the left's proposed higher education reform, which focused on the creation of new highly specialized technical institutes, aimed also to the continued formation of workers, won over large segments of the younger generation of technicians and specialized workers, a large and crucial category in Istalia's productive fabric.

The MdV, while remaining the cornerstone of the alliance, lost part of the social-liberal vote that had supported it during the golden years of its expansion. A portion of this electorate shifted toward the National Liberal Party and Democracy & Freedom, both of which experienced significant growth thanks to the centrality of economic and fiscal issues during the campaign. The results demonstrate how the socialist and radical left have regained their centrality in the coalition, and in these elections more than ever have they allowed the coalition to maintain its majority. However, this was not a shift from the left toward conservatism, but rather a repositioning of the reformist-liberal camp, which, in recent years, had seemed squeezed between progressives and traditionalists.

At the opposition, the Hosian Democratic Union remains by far the largest party, and although it too has seen a decrease, it has gained exactly the same number of seats as the MdV. Francesca Pizzi's leadership has confirmed a renewed ability to unite the conservative camp: during the election campaign, Pizzi fostered a structured rapprochement with the PNL and D&L, forming a more compact political front and presenting herself as a credible alternative to the reformist left. Paradoxically, the reemergence of economic issues, historically more favorable to the liberal camp, has allowed the UOD's partners to regain ground, reducing the relative weight of Pizzi's party while strengthening the right's overall competitiveness.

The center-right thus emerges from the vote more cohesive, strengthened, and has demonstrated its ability to appeal to that segment of the electorate disappointed by the MdV. Francesca Pizzi's effective rhetoric on the need for political change and her criticism of the MdV's evident leftward bias have captured the attention of voters who once favored the Greens precisely for their progressive-liberal identity, but who now appear to have "taken too far leftward".

A disappointing result, instead, for the Istalian National Front (FNI), which, after its breakthrough in 5688, drops to just 11 seats, greatly reducing its parliamentary strength. The reasons for the FNI’s decline lie both in the left’s improved ability to counter its rhetoric on immigration and security, and in the broader shift in the political climate, where socio-economic issues have overtaken identity-based concerns. Even within the military, where the FNI had achieved an exceptional result in 5688, its support has partially eroded, likely due to a more stable perception of Istalia’s integration into SOMECO, including among Armed Forces personnel.

And just about the military vote, after decades of unreserved support for progressive governments, in the latest elections the military showed signs of reorienting itself toward the center-right, reflecting a shift in perception of the country and its political leadership. The previous legislature had seen the emergence of a nationalist core that had been squeezed for years between progressives and liberals, allowing to the FNI that first exploit. In this elections, with economic issues returning to the center of debate, the military favored the UOD and PNL in particular, although it remained clear that currently the UOD is perceived as the most organized, coherent and solid opposition force. The governing coalition parties have maintained support among the military, with the PSD and PNC holding steady, while the MdV has seen a slight decline. Could it be that Cantalamessa's reformist agenda is beginning to lose its appeal within the Armed Forces?

But now, consultations by the Empress will begin already this week, a mere formality at this point, and Marina Cantalamessa is simply waiting for the call to Quattroregni Palace to receive from Her Imperial Majesty the mandate to form the new government. The Minister Secretary, already on election night as the results were becoming clear, reiterated that the reformist spirit that has defined her previous terms will remain at the core of her political action throughout this legislature as well. The absolute priority will be completing the vast UBI project and the reform of the tax system, which are set to become welfare and taxation: "a single integrated system in which the two tools will finally be aligned, coordinated, and working in synergy for a fairer, smarter, and more accessible Istalia".
