ROMULA - An unprecedented digital storm has hit Istalia over the past week, when a series of photos and videos, all later confirmedto be highly elaborate deepfakes by top cybersecurity experts, flooded the internet in the past days, sparking outrage, shock and a wave of speculation. The content, produced with extremely sophisticated artificial intelligence techniques, target Minister Secretary of State Marina Cantalamessa, her closest collaborator Federico Panetta, and, even more disturbingly, two young members of the Imperial House: the Grand Prince of the Crown Nicola (20) and his sister Grand Princess Giorgia (17).

Investigators are speaking of a "large-scale destabilization operation", but have already ruled out the involvement of foreign governments, focusing instead on independent hostile actors, whether domestic or originating from non-state transnational networks. A sophisticated operation, meticulously planned and designed to undermine public trust and generate an immediate emotional reaction, amplified by the involvement of a minor and the speed with which the falsified materials circulated on social media, internet channels and foreign media.

The first wave of deepfakes involved Minister Secretary Cantalamessa. In one photo, the Minister Secretary of State appears seated in an elegant restaurant with the warm atmosphere of historic trattorias: dark wood tables, soft lighting and cream-colored striped tablecloths. Behind the scene, two large refrigerators with transparent doors display premium cuts of beef, illuminated by reddish lights. Sitting next to her, toasting, is Attilio " 'U Professore" Laganà, a fixer linked to the Ndragatìa, the Istalian Mafia.

The second deepfake shows Cantalamessa in an elegant room with high ceilings and a modern reinterpretation of Art Deco: dark marble walls punctuated by golden geometric decorations, linear crystal chandeliers casting sharp reflections, and angular minimalist chromed furnishings. Through the two large windows that enclose the room, Magliano is illuminated, as if in a nighttime photograph taken hundreds of meters above ground. It appears to be the Skylounge of the centrally located and luxury Mariani Gran Residence Hotel. Around the table are CEOs, lobbyists and executives of national and international conglomerates, and the mere presence of the Minister-Secretary is enough to raise doubts.

The most sophisticated deepfake is a video simulated as if filmed by an internal camera at the Ministry, with a fixed frame, grainy images, pale tones and a high-angle view. Federico Panetta, Secretary of State at the Ministry of the State Secretariat and chief of staff for Cantalamessa, can be seen entering an office, sitting across from a man identifiable as a financial sector lobbyist, and, after a few minutes, receiving an envelope that passes effortlessly from the lobbyist's hand to his. The audio, even more convincing than the images, reproduces a voice perfectly compatible with Panetta's real one and we hear phrases such as "We can push to include this change in the corrective package, but your political support must grow" or "The Minister Secretary must not be directly involved". It is precisely this voice that the investigators focused their analysis on, which confirmed that it is a nearly perfect synthetic generation, likely obtained by sampling authentic videos of Panetta in press conferences and interviews and reprocessing them using AI.

While the content targeting Cantalamessa was clearly intended to create political disarray and destabilize the government, the content targeting the Imperial House has taken on an even more serious and disturbing character, a veritable media outrage that has opened a much wider wound, touching on profound symbols of national identity but also the extremely sensitive sphere of minors. The involvement of Princess Giorgia made the attack even more shocking and reprehensible, crossing all ethical boundaries and striking public opinion at its most vulnerable point.

The first shot shows the Grand Prince of the Crown Nicola at a crowded rave, with purple, orange and blue lights filtering through a thick cloud of smoke. The Prince appears sweaty and pale, his shirt completely unbuttoned, sunglasses, a necklace swinging across his chest and a large plastic cup filled with beer in his right hand. A girl in a tiny dress is arm in arm with him, posing seductively while smoking.

Another image places him on the back of a luxury superyacht, during the day, amidst fine wood finishes and a sophisticated marine design. A circular pool is visible, crowded with young people frolicking in the water while others are diving into the sea. In the background, an island reminiscent of the Solocasie archipelago stands out against a clear sky. In the small lounge overlooking the stern, the Grand Prince chats and laughs with a group of peers, surrounded by bottles of spirits, some sniffing "white powder", others shamelessly involved in effusion on the upholstered sofas. In the background, her sister, Grand Princess Giorgia, dances flirtatiously between two boys, one of them clinging to her.
The young woman will only turn eighteen in a few months, a detail that makes the fake even more shocking and has amplified public outrage, raising the issue of the vulnerability of minors in an age where the line between truth and fiction can be erased in a matter of seconds.

But the most serious deepfake is a "social media-style" video, reproducing the interface of a popular social network, complete with like icons, comments, a view counter and even animated emoticons flying upward, as well as endless comments of all kinds. In the video, the fake Grand Prince is smoking a joint while having explicit sex with a girl, intended to be a provocative stripper or prostitute. The girl simultaneously interacts in front of her with two other "friends" of the Prince, exchanging the joint eachother.
Experts have clarified that the body doesn't match Nicola's real one, but the rendering of his face, perfectly synchronized with his movements, made the video extremely credible in the first few hours.

Authorities describe content of a technical quality "unseen to date on the Majatran continent". Sources within the General Directorate of Communications and Cybersecurity (DGCC) explain that the deepfakes were released in a coordinated manner, one after another, to create a growing scandal. A digital attack "clearly aimed at undermining the foundations of public trust", stated the Chef of the Imperial State Police.
The DGCC and the National Cybersecurity Center of the State Police worked swiftly to remove the content, but the political and social repercussions were enormous.

The government expressed extreme alarm, so much so that it urgently convened an Emergency meeting of the Imperial State Council and labeled the incident as "an unprecedented threat to democracy".
A comprehensive evaluation of initiatives to respond to these threats has already begun during the week. Measures under consideration include the introduction of mandatory digital watermarks for all AI-generated content, a cryptographic tracking system to verify its origin, extraordinary powers for the immediate removal of harmful deepfakes, the creation of a national registry of authenticated content and strengthening the National Cybersecurity Center with a dedicated department for "hostile" AI. A cooperation protocol with major national and global tech giants is also being considered for the creation of an ethical content regulatory framework. Istalia is aimed also to work on such a framework with its partners into the SOMECO to create a common safe digital area.

At a press conference held late yesterday afternoon, Marina Cantalamessa, flanked by the Minister of Defense and National Security, the Minister of the Interior, the Director of the Intelligence Services and the Chief of the State Police, spoke personally and, in a harsh tone, expressed the government's outrage and concern:

What happened is a cowardly and extremely dangerous attack. And it's not just about falsifications about me or my collaborator and it's not even just an attack against the institutions and the government. What was done to the young members of the Imperial House is much worse, a grave offense to their dignity, to the Crown and to the whole Country. It's a vile and degrading act, which affects two young people who have no political responsibility but represent the future and continuity of our nation, but above all, it affects a young woman who has not yet reached adulthood.

This technology, if exploited maliciously, demonstrates that anyone can be manipulated, that the truth can be corrupted in real time and that democracy itself can be manipulated and put at risk. The very essential and fundamental trust between citizens and government can be destroyed by a mere algorithm.

But this technology, which allows for these highly detailed falsifications, can be extremely harmful not only to the community, but also to individuals, especially young people, who can become victims of destructive and harmful content. This is unacceptable and requires an immediate response, nationally and internationally. Because, I assure you, we will not stand by idly, but will defend citizens, institutions and the truth with all necessary tools.

The investigation continues, but meanwhile, in Istalia, where the Monarch and the Imperial House represent one of the symbolic pillars of collective identity, the attack has opened a much broader debate: how protected are ordinary citizens in a world where an image can erase a reputation? And how prepared are institutions to deal with a technology that could bring the State and its institutions to their knees?
