South Dovani Re-Elects Weakened Governing Coalition

South Dovani’s legislative election, held yesterday, returned the governing United Conservative Front (UCF) as the largest party in the National Assembly, extending its hold on government while leaving it in a weakened position after losing the highest number of seats of any party. Although diminished, the result still marked the second-strongest electoral performance in the party’s history, underscoring the UCF’s continued dominance even as voter support became more diffuse.

The governing coalition campaigned on continuity, highlighting legislative initiatives related to law enforcement and security funding. Prime Minister Prasert Thanomchai’s health, following multiple hospitalizations over the past few years, was not a central campaign issue but remained part of the broader political context as voters weighed the country's leadership candidates. Ultimately, exit polls suggest that voters opted to support the party, rather than the leader, they view as most capable of providing stability as South Dovani continues to navigate economic stagnation, conflict in the eastern provinces, rising organized crime, and persistent urban violence.

Among the opposition parties, the largest winner was the Justice Party (JP) which surged to become the second largest party in the National Assembly, continuing to draw voters from away from traditional left-wing parties, such as the New Elephant Worker's Party (NEWP), the Revolutionary Alliance (RA), and the Progressive People's Union (PPU). The JP campaigned on a number of progressive policy commitments, such as lowering the costs of education and healthcare, particularly for rural communities, as well as passing a comprehensive suite of anti-corruption legislation. On the issues of crime and violence, the JP argued for a softer approach to addressing increased drug crime, as well as working towards a negotiated settlement of hostilities in the east.

Despite the party’s strong showing, the JP's founding leader, Thaksin Luang, announced on election night that he intended to step down as party leader. Addressing supporters, Thaksin said the party’s strong showing made it an appropriate moment for a generational transition.

“At this time of strong momentum for our movement, it is time to step aside and let the next generation carry forward our cause,” he said, adding that he would remain in the National Assembly for the duration of his elected mandate and continue as interim party leader until a leadership election is held to select his successor.
