Randworth - To strengthen the economy, the National-led government of Prime Minister Henry Humperdinck has proposed a sweeping package of bills aimed at deregulating multiple sectors and significantly reducing the regulatory burden on industry, with a particular focus on resource extraction and heavy manufacturing. The government argues that the reforms are necessary to boost investment, improve international competitiveness, and unlock economic growth that has been constrained by what it describes as “excessive and outdated regulation.”

In response to the proposed federal changes, several states have already moved to align their policies with the government’s economic agenda. The states of Outback, New Orange, and Trelodge have officially announced that they will issue additional mining licences in the coming months, opening up new areas for mineral and resource exploration. Meanwhile, Voisain, Trelodge, and Rimly have confirmed plans to relax planning and zoning rules, allowing for the construction of more factories, processing plants, and other industrial facilities.

The announcements have been welcomed by business groups and industry representatives, who see the developments as a clear sign that the Humperdinck government is delivering on its promise of economic reform. Mining and manufacturing associations have praised the measures as a “long-overdue correction,” predicting increased employment, higher export revenues, and renewed confidence among domestic and foreign investors. Government figures have pointed to early signals of interest from multinational firms as evidence that the reforms are already having an impact.
However, the deregulation drive has sparked concern among environmental organisations and conservation groups. Several have warned that the rapid expansion of mining and industrial activity could lead to long-term environmental damage, particularly in ecologically sensitive regions. Critics argue that the rollback of safeguards risks undermining biodiversity, water quality, and land rehabilitation efforts that took decades to establish.

While many political moderates agree that the previous regulatory framework placed an unnecessarily heavy burden on companies—a legacy often attributed to the former coalition involving the Wildlife Party—they have expressed unease at the speed and scale of the reforms. These voices stress that economic growth and environmental protection should not be treated as mutually exclusive, cautioning that insufficient oversight could provoke public backlash and future economic costs.

Environmental Minister Amanda Sharpe sought to strike a conciliatory tone, acknowledging both sides of the debate. In a statement to the press, the minister said that while the government remains committed to economic development and job creation, it also recognises its responsibility to protect the environment. “Deregulation does not mean deregulation without limits,” the minister said. “We will continue to enforce core environmental standards and ensure that development is carried out responsibly.”
