McDermott Sworn In After 56 Days of Political Deadlock
Liberal leader forms government following protracted negotiations marked by regional tensions and cabinet disputes

LONMOUTH — Owen McDermott was sworn in as Prime Minister yesterday, bringing to a close 56 days of fractious negotiations that followed December's general election. Beyond policy, the CPP demanded cabinet seats in Justice, Interior, and Commerce—portfolios that would give the party substantial influence over law enforcement, internal security, and economic regulation. CPP leader Cillian Thomson-Haines, a personal friend of McDermott's from their days in provincial politics, privately indicated he considered the demands excessive, but was bound by his parliamentary caucus.

McDermott initially attempted to form a cabinet with the CPP, but after weeks of negotiations, the party's standards proved insurmountable. We didn't end the Years of Lead just to have politicians throw petrol on old wounds whenever it suits their political calculus."

The breakthrough came through intervention by O'Fahy-Hudson, who was elected Lord Chancellor in 5693. An Inglian-Kilani priest from Measmore in the Sliabh Ard mountains, O'Fahy-Hudson served as dean of Bridgemont Cathedral during the Years of Lead and became a prominent face of the nonviolence movement. His unique credibility—his mother was Inglian, his father Kilani—proved crucial in bridging ethnic and regional divisions.

O'Fahy-Hudson convened closed-door meetings at Bridgemont House in late January, bringing together McDermott, Ritchie, and Deirdre Gruagáin, Chief Executive of the Kilani Free Zone. Gruagáin, a member of the Social Democratic Worker's Party, reportedly told negotiators she was "livid" that Ritchie would attempt to hold the process hostage. "A party that refuses to back the Prime Minister in a confidence vote has no moral standing to demand seats at the cabinet table," Gruagáin said.

The Ministry of Energy went to Thomas Blackwell, an Inglian Liberal from Redford's industrial heartlands, whilst the Ministry of Infrastructure was assigned to Maeve Ó Ceallaigh, a Kilani Liberal with deep roots in the Sliabh Ard communities.

O'Carolan, the new SDWP leader who will serve as Leader of the Opposition, expressed disappointment at being excluded from consideration despite the party's campaign emphasis on grand coalition possibilities. "We would have preferred a broader coalition that included the Liberals and us," O'Carolan said in his response to the Prime Minister's first address to the House. "But we recognise that Prime Minister McDermott has put together a government within the constitutional framework, and we will hold them to account on policy, not on ethnicity. The people of New Englia are tired of politicians who reach for the ethnic card every time they face a political setback."

Ritchie released a statement describing the new government as "illegitimate in spirit if not in law," arguing that any administration without Inglian participation in senior roles cannot claim to represent the Confederation's diversity. The CPP has signalled it will oppose the government's legislative agenda at every turn. Thomson-Haines expressed "deep disappointment" at the outcome whilst noting his continued personal regard for McDermott.

McDermott's first major test will come within weeks, when his government presents its federal budget to the House. The Prime Minister has pledged to stabilise New Englia's modest oil and gas sector through measured development rather than rapid extraction, and has promised targeted investment in the Sliabh Ard communities where poverty rates remain high. On the Railway Revitalisation Plan, McDermott has indicated he will commission a revised, more fiscally modest version.
