Politics: Stockton aims to draw support for Labour from labour unions in LWU conference.

The National Labour Party has traditionally been the main representative of the Luthorian working class in Darlington Palace. However, faced with a decline in public perception after more than 3 decades of Conservative dominance in government, the Labour Party now stands at a crossroads. Under the leadership of Edward Holian-Keaty, the party aims at reclaiming lost ground among blue collar voters, this is specifically aimed at countering the Tories and the other left-wing political parties (Left, Green parties)' attempts at gaining ground among this category of voters.

Speaking at the 5702 Luthorian Workers' Union national conference, deputy Labour leader, Henry Stockton tried to argue to an unconvinced crowd that the Labour Party was the "best choice" for workers nationally. He argues that Labour's accomplishments while in government are "simply too big to be ignored". Some were receptive to the message, but as an attendee putted it, for many it was "merely another political stunt aimed at receiving our support and do nothing to actually improve the lives of Luthorian workers".

Undettered by this overall negative reception of his speech, Mr. Stockton said to journalists that "Labour will make the working class' lives better, through fairer taxation and increased salaries nationwide".

This move was widely observed as a political strategy by experts, the Labour Party is currently on the backfoot on the leadup to the 5704 general elections, where the Conservatives are expected to be reelected with a higher margin than in 5700. Reasons for this are multiple, foreign policy successes, continued economic growth since the end of the Recession of 5698 are stated as reasons for the Tories' continued popularity among voters.

In the face of these bleak projection, the National Labour Party remains defiant, Labour officials have stated that the party is "currently working on an agenda, for every segment of Luthorian society, not for the few.", an explicit long-time criticism of the Conservative Party's platform, which has been labeled as being "pro-rich".

Inside the Luthorian Workers' Union, the Labour Party is, regardless of the reported reactions of Stockton's speech, viewed in high regard although A LWU executive said about the NLP that "they [the National Labour Party] remains the Luthorian working class' greatest ally, but, there've been grievances from workers that haven't been addressed properly by the former leaderships."

These grievances, have mostly been focused on the state of current-day Luthorian welfare protections. While the welfare state has been maintained by the Conservatives during their successive terms in government, the modern-day Luthorian welfare state isn't comparable to what it has once been, provisions have been tightened, the government exerces more control to avoid potential fraud of the system, besides, numerous critics have argued that the social protection net was becoming "much less effective" as the years pass.

The effectiveness of Mr. Stockton's strategy remains to be seen, while the deputy Labour leader, he isn't an ally of current Labour leader, quite the opposite, having been elected to the position as the flamboyant representative of the Labour Party's hard left-wing current, in opposition to the moderate social democrat leadership currently in place. Nonetheless, the two entertain a tenous peace agreement, focusing instead on combining their efforts in uniting the party and winning back a majority in the Imperial Diet and reclaiming 10 Crown Street, more than 30 years after the last Labour Prime Minister Howe's resignation following electoral defeat.
