Schloss an der Hügel - Birds chirping in the same nests as last year, age old streets untouched by the present and a city booming in business by the likes of it. While the rest of the country lays in ruin, it is the capital of Südland that makes you wonder whether the civil war has actually happened. Not a single bullet in a wall, no monuments under construction to honour fallen heroes and no homeless veterans dotting the streets. The second civil war has left its mark on the entire country, but Ostlanders have clearly managed to keep its destruction from their region.
During the war, the Ostlander National Bloc was reformed for the first time in decades with one goal in mind: protecting Ostlanders. Even before loyalist or restorationist forces could flood the streets of Schloss an der Hügel, Ostlander militia's took over security and established a cohesive entity quickly taking over local services. When the war erupted in full, Südland had already been under the full control of the National bloc. For the entire two years of conflict, Ostlander militia's kept Panmuan forces from entering Südlander territory. ONB leaders set up parallel regional services, kept water and electricity running and managed to smuggle in aid for their population. When the war eventually ended, all of Northern New Verham was spared thanks in large part to the Ostlander majority. After the Baatrynsentii Accord, all Ostlander militia's laid down their weapons and its parallel services were transformed in the newly reastablished Südland. Under the New Verham constitution, Ostlanders were finally granted their autonomous rights again, something they had lost under Gaoist rule.
Last year, following the first Südland General Election, the new Ostlandischer Staatspartei (OSP) won a absolute majority of seats in the Landtag, forming a majority government under former mayor Gottfried von Donnerschlag. The new Südlander government saw the benefits of proactive ONB intervention in the civil war, as Südland is by far the richest and most well preserved region in the new republic. It has allowed the von Donnerschlag government to pass a wide variety of policies without worrying over regional finances. His government has, in just this past year, cut Südlander taxes, passed universial childcare, added funding to the Südlander Police Force and push for the establishment of the Südlander judicial system. All this as the Republic has been struggling to find the funds for reconstruction alone.
Due to its position, the Südlander government has already been in contact with its partners in the central government, seeking to help in funding the provinces under its jurisdiction and allowing these provinces to fully develop in the coming years. Additionally, Südlander minister for national affairs Maximilian der Eisenfaust has been in contact with counterparts in the Vanukean Autonomous Region, which itself has struggled since its inception. By working with the national government and Vanukeans, the von Donnerschlag government hopes to strengthen the entire country and further stimulate the economy, benefitting Südland itself in the long term.
