Baatrynsentii - The young Republic is in deep crisis. Despite aggressive attempts to slash public spending over the past year following the court of auditors recommendations, the national debt remains alarmingly high, while economic recovery falters, sending the country into what analysts warn could become a downward spiral. The person mostly held responsible for the worsening situation is incumbent President Bor Khasar, who has in his term attempted to balance the investments needed for reconstruction and the need to maintain a healthy budget to prevent a debt crisis. What the current situation seems to show, is that the former general has failed to do both.

The government’s austerity measures, including cuts to infrastructure projects, social programs, and veteran compensation, were intended to rein in debt, which currently exceeds 120 % of GDP. Yet the reductions have slowed growth, leaving businesses struggling, unemployment stubbornly high, and public confidence waning. “Debt hasn’t gone away, but the economy is taking the hit,” said Dr. Gaston Meinhard, senior economist at the Baatrynsentii Institute for Economic Research. “By slashing spending to try to manage the debt, the government has inadvertently stalled recovery. That kind of feedback loop is exactly what can push an economy into a downward spiral.”

A downward spiral is exactly what the country is currently facing. Not just the debt crisis and failing economy are hurting the Khasar administration, the continued security threat is also looming over its term. While quick action to form the ASM and reastablish a military force were seen as logical and well executed, the following cuts in spending and lack of coordination with allies has resulted in slow progress within the ASM in the last few months. While the mission remains operational and the NVDF is slowly gaining in experience and capabilities, the looming withdrawal from Egelion and a lack of funding for procurement are seriously hurting its progress.

In the Ostlander territories, clashes between provincial  and Ostlander police and unidentified militant groups have injured multiple officials, sparking fear amongst the people in Südland as this was the first security incident in the territory. In the capital, a bomb exploded near a government building last week believed to house former President Argat awaiting his trial, causing minor injuries. The incident was quickly claimed by the GRCD, which has made it clear that it seeks to free the former president from captivity and welcome him to the breakaway state.

Inside the ruling People’s Action Party, tensions are reaching a boiling point. Both conservatives and progressives, despite sharply different agendas, have increasingly criticized President Khasar, signaling a rare convergence of dissent aimed squarely at the president’s leadership. Conservative factions argue that austerity measures have been poorly implemented and that the president’s cautious approach undermines fiscal discipline. Progressives, meanwhile, argue that the spending cuts have been too severe, stifling growth and failing to address social inequities. The result is a rare bipartisan-style push within the party itself to limit Khasar's authority and reshape policy direction. Party insiders say planning for the upcoming primary elections has already begun. Many within the party are quietly preparing for a potential defeat for Khasar, seeking to install a candidate who can unite the fractured wings. Simultaneously, legislative initiatives are being drafted in Congress to curtail the president’s discretion over budgets, appointments, and emergency powers, a move analysts describe as an effort to “engineer checks from within.”

Khasar himself has directed his cabinet to enter negotiations with regional and international partners for increased support. The President does however seem concerned over such negotiations, fearing that his allies might demand reforms he will be unable to implement. With a weakened domestic position, he also risks alienating his partners in the ASM, who have already invested millions and with some participating states announcing their intend to withdraw due to increasing costs and weakened domestic enthusiasm for the mission.
