The 5704 general elections were to be a test on Prime Minister Seddon’s leadership and personal popularity and while the Conservatives maintained a majority in the Imperial Diet, the party nonetheless lost its absolute majority of 3 seats in the lower house, being reduced to a situation of plurality. 

The Conservative Party won 228 seats in the Diet and 31.3% of the popular vote, out of 477 seats, followed by the Labour Party at 217 seats and 29.7% of the national popular vote. Exit polls, later confirmed by official results place the Liberal Party at 10 seats, an light decrease of 1 seat compared to their previous performance in 5700, the Hosian People’s Party seized 3rd spot with 13 seats, a jump of 4 seats compared to 5700 where they won 9 seats. 

Reasons for this are stated to have been the Prime Minister’s campaign, which damaged the Conservatives’ chances in the “Industrial Heartland” of the Empire – where the Tories lost several seats in favour of insurgent HPP and Labour candidates, but, on the other hand, Prime Minister Seddon, through his successful foreign policy in New Verham secured voters from an higher educated background, gaining ground in urban areas, and specifically in high-revenue neighbourhoods. In opposition, the HPP gained grounds among disgruntled former Tory voters in both Erneshire, Northriding and Orange. 

While Labour strengthened its hold in industrial regions, their perceived “weakness” on foreign policy and economic issues – both issues having been raised during both leaders’ debate and where Mr. Holian-Keaty struggled against the experienced Prime Minister, nonetheless, the Leader of the Opposition landed a few hits on the Prime Minister’s record, claiming he was “warmongering” through his foreign policy style and “dangerously breaking the precedent of Luthori not joining multilateral alliances” - he moreover attacked the government’s “failed” industrial policy, claiming that more jobs have been lost during the last 4 years than created and that the government “utterly failed in its duties to the Luthorian people to provide struggling and laid off workers with enough to live until back to work”. 

Mr. Seddon, to deflect from the accusation, promised that his next government would create “thousands of new jobs” during their tenure, with details being vague about how this promise would be implemented. He also argued for “strengthened national security – through the strengthening of border patrols”. Prime Minister Seddon, while not backing down from his earlier coal comments, stated that a Tory government would “massively invest” into the “international oil industry”. A move, that will in the Prime Minister’s mindset, accelerate Luthorian economic growth through its role as a “outside partner” to most oil-producing titans, such as the Vascanian Empire. 

The Prime Minister also promised the launch of a “debate and reflection” upon Luthori’s retirement age – a move that has already drew the ire of unions and opposition parties, with the Labour Party’s platform instead arguing for the decrease of the current retirement age from 67 to 65. The Trade Unions’ Council has already warned that “any move to increase the burden placed upon ordinary Luthorians will be met with a strong popular resistance” 

While the Tories scored an important victory in these election, Prime Minister Seddon’s popularity remains shaky, with an earlier poll from WePoll stating that around 41% of Luthorians had a good opinion on the Prime Minister’s performance and that 52% of Luthorians opposed it. Already, players within his Cabinet and the wider Conservative Party have expressed informal reservations at his extended stay at Number 10 following this disappointing election night, after all, the Tories are forced into a minority government or form a governing coalition with either the Liberals or the HPP, neither option being appealing. 

PM Seddon has indicated his “full commitment” to the Office of the Prime Minister and has called rumours of a potential coup against his premiership “lies and deceptions” from his rivals – he moreover announced “extending a hand to both the Liberal Party and the Hosian People’s Party” in order to negotiate a government agreement with either party.
