Barela announces his resignation to allow for a new coalition government

The political deadlock that has gripped the nation since the January elections has come to an end this morning after Chancellor Krystian Barela, in a televised address from the Chancellery, has surprisingly announced his formal resignation as Chancellor, a move that paves the way for a historic tripartite coalition between Sovereign Valruzia, the Communist Party of Valruzia and the Socialdemocratic–Agrarian Party.

Barela's resignation is the direct result of the "red line" drawn by the KPW and the SPR in January following the election results, in which Sovereign Valruzia lost the first position that was awarded to the conservatives of Forward Valruzia for the first time in modern history. Despite Barela's resilience – having survived a failed no-confidence vote and the public scrutiny of his 5698 scandal – his prospective partners made it clear this time: the 5705 electoral results demanded a new face at the helm of the Chancellery.

In his farewell address, Barela, the former labor lawyer and university professor, adopted his tone of a statesman, claiming to prioritize the collective over the individual. "I choose to offer my departure as the last service to the stability of the Republic, ensuring that the progress we have built is not sacrificed on the altar of personal ambition" he declared, a subtle jab at those who accused him of clinging to power.

During his tenures, Barela transformed Valruzia into a bicameral nation and spearheaded the leading AI Sovereignty Law, among other things. Now, he steps down to ensure that Sovereign Valruzia maintains the Chancellery, handing the baton to his until now Deputy Chancellor Marzel Zagórski, who will lead a cabinet where the SPR and KPW will hold a great influence, as it is expected for the KPW to lead the labor and industry ministries and for the SPR to head Agriculture and science, at least. Further disclosure of the ministries has not been announced.

The atmosphere in the Sejm, however, was far from celebratory when after months of negotiations the deal was announced. Konrad Sekula, leader of Forward Valruzia, did not hold back in his criticism. Although NW became the largest party for the first time in history, they have been mathematically sidelined by the new pact.

"What we are witnessing is the ultimate cynicism" Sekula stated. "Barela isn't leaving out of dignity; he is being purged by his own partners. This coalition is not a government of progress, but a "government of losers" united only by their fear of the mandate for change that Valruzians expressed at the ballot box. They have traded the Chancellery for a collection of ministries to be managed by radicals". 

However, behind doors some NW officials believe that this government will benefit them in the long term the same way it benefitted the KPW after the Sabala government, which displaced the election winners – Iwan Nowik's KPW – in favor of a "coalition of losers", bringing an absolute majority for the communists the following elections.
