Late last night, after a second round of voting that kept party headquarters buzzing well past midnight, former aid worker turned politician Yeke Anarba defeated President Bor Khasar, capturing 52 percent of the party vote and securing the PAP nomination for next year’s presidential election. For a party with millions of members (and a near-monopoly on executive power) the result lands with the force of a political earthquake.
At the start of the primary season late last year, Khasar’s renomination appeared almost inevitable. A civil war hero whose leadership helped rebuild the republic, he entered the race with unmatched name recognition and deep reservoirs of institutional loyalty. Even as the economy stagnated, reconstruction was slow and public frustration mounted over what critics described as a reactive, crisis-driven presidency, few believed the party would truly turn on one of its founding figures. The early challenge came from familiar ideological camps. Husun Mutugen, the conservative Minister for State Security, promised order, continuity, and a firmer hand at home and abroad. On the left, Teguder Ahmad Tuva, the self-described socialist, or “Mönkhdevshilist,” as his supporters prefer, energized activists with calls for redistribution and a sharper break from regional economic pressure. Tuva especially saw momentum, being the only candidate to reject both the RASA and ASM. But in the end neither managed to decisively crack Khasar’s hold on the party machine. Until Anarba happened.
Until a few weeks ago, Anarba was widely considered a respectable but marginal contender: a former humanitarian aid coordinator that had helped Nadiyan efforts in providing aid during the civil war but with limited time in formal politics, known more for policy roundtables than rally speeches. His campaign coffers were thin. His national profile was modest. His chances, according to most analysts, were minimal. But he was unorthodox and thought provoking. Anarba’s message, progressive political reform paired with conservative fiscal discipline, began to resonate with younger party members exhausted by economic hardship but wary of abandoning stability altogether. His explicit commitment to maintaining RASA, the reform-linked economic support framework with regional allies, reassured donors and technocrats. At the same time, his pledge to uphold the ASM, the absolute support mission, blunted accusations that he was naïve on security.
Crucially, a small but influential group of party donors broke ranks in the final stretch, injecting resources that allowed Anarba to blanket social platforms, student branches, and local party assemblies. The momentum fed on itself. By the time first-round votes were tallied, it was clear the race had transformed into a genuine three-way fight. With minor candidates eliminated and Tuva’s supporters split, some reluctantly backing Khasar, others defecting to Anarba, the incumbent found himself facing a challenger who now embodied renewal without rupture.
