Baatrynsentii - President Yeke Anarba’s rapid removal of senior officials across the judiciary, military, financial institutions, and provincial governments is drawing growing concern from opposition leaders, legal scholars, and civil society groups, who warn the sweeping changes resemble a political purge rather than a routine transition in government. In just three weeks since being reappointed by the Supreme Congress under the country’s new presidential system, Anarba has dismissed or replaced more than 120 senior officeholders, many of them long-serving technocrats appointed during the People’s Action Party (PAP) era. While presidential allies describe the moves as necessary to “restore policy coherence,” critics say the scale and targets of the dismissals threaten institutional independence. Even some within his own, new, People's Progressive Congress have raised doubts over Anarba's intentions and the speed of the changes. 

“This goes far beyond a reshuffle,” said constitutional law professor Yul Chanar. “We are witnessing the systematic replacement of independent officeholders with political loyalists across nearly every institution.”

Particular concern has focused on the judiciary. Last Friday, Anarba dismissed High Court Justice Cagan Ebugen, one of the court’s most senior members, along with three Provincial Court judges known for anti-corruption rulings involving government contracts during the PAP administration. Ebugen had authored a widely cited decision two years ago limiting emergency powers sought by Anarba. Within hours of the dismissals, the presidency announced replacements, including Elbek Khongtaghar, a former legal adviser to Anarba during his time as representative. 

The Court of Auditors has also been almost entirely reconstituted. Its chair, Elfrun von Trotha, who had overseen multiple investigations into state-owned enterprises and is best known for his oppossition to former President Khasar's dismissal of the institution, was replaced by Baliq Bayarmaa, previously deputy finance minister in Anarba’s first government. 

Equally controversial has been the restructuring of New Verham's security leadership. President Anarba dismissed General Degei Tolon, the General Chief of the Armed Forces, replacing him with Lt. Gen. Philip Kortz, who previously served as Anarba’s military advisor during his first term. The president also replaced the National Police Commissioner, Ajai Ketboge, with Devet Berdi, a former provincial security chief considered politically close to the administration.

Former defense minister Jali Bukha, speaking on public radio, warned that “rapid political turnover inside the command structure risks undermining professional independence within the armed forces.”

Economic leadership shifted as well. Reserve Bank Governor Alex van Oostveen was removed mid-term and replaced by economist Balaq Solen, a supporter of the administration’s fiscal agenda. Eight provincial governors were dismissed in a single day, the largest turnover in provincial leadership in decades. 

The Office of the President of the Republic has defended the changes as a lawful “administrative renewal” following the congressional election. Opposition lawmakers and watchdog organizations, however, warn that the concentration of appointment power, combined with the speed of the dismissals, could weaken institutional independence. Whether the changes ultimately strengthen governance or undermine democratic norms remains an open question. For now, President Anarba continues to consolidate his administration, signaling that the transformation of the state’s leadership is still underway.
