Kundrati to consider membership in MATO

Kasaema - President Poloni Jastenev announced today in a meeting with business leaders that, after years of considering their options and working with allies on how to join organizations, the Kundrati Union would seek membership in the Majatran-Artanian Treaty and it's associated MATO organization.

In his announcement President Jastenev cited Artanian brotherhood and unity alongside the protection of liberal democracy as a reason for joining. President Jastenev cited the Kundrati Legion's effects on the Kundrati state and of democracy itself as a catalyst for joining saying that the Legion stripped bare all semblence of democracy and ruined the lives of millions of people throughout Terra and that never again could Kundrati allow itself to be conquered by dictatorship. By joining MATO, the President said, the goal is that Kundrati could be restrained from authoritarianism while contributing to the defense of liberal democracy throughout Terra, something which aligns with the modern Kundrati military doctrine.

The process of joining MATO, according to some experts, requires Kundrati to inform MATO and wait for MATO to approve Kundrati's membership. In the meantime, the Kundrati Legebiltzarra is expected to pass the ratification articles of the Majatran-Artanian Treaty allowing Kundrati to formally join MATO when approval is provided.

Kundrati's contribution to MATO is expected to be small at first given Kundrati is rebuilding their defense industry. Historically the Kundrati Union contributed a large navy for the defense of the Artanian and Lievenian Seas alongside a modern air force. It is more than likely that Kundrati could specialize in naval ships and airplanes though this could be covered by other members. Kundrati would be expected, were a MATO member to be attacked, to come to the defense of the member in question.

President Jastenev noted the possibility that joining MATO would place Kundrati into a certain sphere of influence. The President denied this and said that Kundrati was welcome to economic investment and development from anywhere in Terra that wanted to do business in Kundrati and that joining MATO would not affect that beyond Kundrati helping their Artanian and Majatran brothers in arms. The President said that joining MATO was pragmatic and that though some nations will not be happy with Kundrati's decision ultimately they would come around to understand that their economic interests would not be harmed.

Word now waits on whether Kundrati could join MATO or not. President Jastenev said that he would be content with any kind of membership with the hope that Kundrati could contribute to the common Artanian spirit - even if it were that Kundrati would be an observer or a full member or something in between.
