Gawel Sandów, the 36 years-old labor lawyer and former Olympic champion, was elected President of Valruzia with 61% of the votes against Wiara Krysiak, the Ruzian medical doctor. The runoff election, which saw the participation of Valruzians abroad for the first time in a presidential election, concluded with a decisive mandate for Sandów, after a campaign that pitted Krysiak's more idealistic platform against Sandów's charisma and down-to-earth ideas, which in the end proved decisive to bring hime more conservative votes from Chynberg and Gryfit.
With his victory, Sandów makes a first as the first directly-elected male Valruzian head of State – although there were male heads of State of Valruzia during the times of the Presidencies, they were the Marshalls of the Voivodeships rather than directly-elected positions –, becoming the first male in the post since the Valruzian restoration of democracy following the fall of the Morawski dictatorship 88 years ago.
Despite his openly support for the People's Front of Kampania during past years, he focused his campaign on other issues, and while Wiara Krysiak dominated the progressive Ruzian vote, she was unable to overcome the popularity Sandów gained during the first round. His background and popularity as a gold medalist in the past 5710 Terran Olympics and his fluency in five languages proved to be a formidable asset in international messaging, even before taking office. After winning the first round with 30.2% against Krysiak's 22.7%, the result of the second round ended up being more wide than polls previously expected. The endorsement of third-placed Kamil Syrek (17.5%) and the refusal of last-placed Aniela Just (14.6%) played in his favor, whilst the endorsement of Valusian candidate Teodor Flak (15%) did not bring Krysiak enough support to overcome Sandów. Despite hailing from Kampania, Valruzia's most progressive Voivodeship, home of the Communist Party of Valruzia and the People's Front of Kampania, Sandów managed to build and appealing profile for himself that could charm more conservative voters, proving to know how to deliver a successful political campaign opposing some of Urszula Pawlik's former positions.
To prove his point, Sandów proceeded to give his inaugural speech not only in Valruzian but also introducing some parts in his other five spoken languages (Luthorian, Istalian, Dundorfian, Egelian and Yingdalan). After swearing office over the Valruzian Constitution, the newly elected President addresses the crowd congregated around the Presidential Palace and after a solemn start appealing for national unity, he surprised the international delegates present at his inauguration:
Quote:"To our partners across the oceans, Valruzia is not a fortress, but also a bridge. Our sovereignty is our strength, but our cooperation with our friends will be our legacy (Luthorian). (Mutual respect and shared prosperity, that is our goal. Valruzia opens a new diplomatic chapter, willing to establish friendship and collaboration with every nation that wishes for peace, Yingdalan).
Members of the Altéa Accords – Egelion, Kalistan, Trigunia/Nadiya and Lodamun sat in the first row of the inauguration with invitations also extended to other nations such as Dundorf, Bianjie, Xsampa and others that took part in the 5710 Olympics, and the newly elected President held bilateral meetings with all present delegates short after his speech ended.
Who is Gawel Sandów?
The new Valruzian President was born into a lineage of steelworkers in Kampania. He was the first in his family to break the cycle and attended the University of Szary Kamien on a scholarship provided by the Kampanian government. His academic record was nothing short of legendary; he graduated with honors in both Law and Political Science at the age of 22, one year before the usual time. During these years, along with his studies, he mastered five foreign languages, a feat he attributes to a "voracious curiosity about how the rest of the world thinks". This linguistic versatility would later become his most potent diplomatic weapon.
But before he was a statesman, Sandów also became a symbol of national pride as a standout player in the Valruzian national Rugby Team as one of the members that led the national team to a historic gold medal at the 5710 Terran Olympics.
Despite being often linked with the People's Front of Kampania – an issue he has never denied and has been pictured attending various political meetings, as well as being a close friend of current Marshall of Kampania and former athlete Szczepan Kozak – and unlike career politicians, Sandów had already stood on a global stage proudly representing the flag and has a background outside professional politics.
Returning from the Olympics, Sandów did not retreat into a quiet life but instead, he continued in his work as a labor lawyer, specializing in industrial disputes and workers' rights, developing in the courtrooms of Kampania his reputation as a "pragmatic progressive", and his presidential candidacy came as a surprise for many of his work colleagues, who hadn't previously seen any interest in doing so. After securing an unprecedented 54% in the first round in his home voivodeship as the representative of the Szary county and defeating all other candidates in the round, he moved to the national stage with a campaign focused on "Active Neutrality", arguing that Valruzia’s strength lay not (only) in isolation, but in its ability to negotiate as an equal with global powers – a position that he aims to put Valruzia in, according to his own words, as he intends to transform Valruzia from its current "regional power" status into a global titan, positioning himself as a successor to the "stability" that former President Pawlik offered while bringing the "energy" of a new generation to the post.
