Conscription Vote Fails after HHP Votes Against Government
17 December 5644 (OOC: Post-dated)

The Strong Nation Party’s (SNP) proposal to reinstate mandatory military service has failed after the Hanzen Heritage Party (HHP) broke ranks with the governing coalition, voting against the bill during its final stage. The defeat marks a significant setback for Prime Minister Prasert Thanomchai in his effort to keep the fragmented coalition government together.

The conscription bill, which would have required all able-bodied men aged 18 to 30 to serve at least two years in the military, had been a concession from the Prime Minister's United Conservative Front (UCF) to SNP leader General Baroma Thannajaro in order to guarantee his party’s support for the coalition. The legislation had also won the support of the Homeland Party (HP) and was initially expected to pass after months of behind-the-scenes negotiations with coalition partners. However, following the withdrawal of the National Development Party (NDP), the governing coalition was left with a much smaller majority in the National Assembly, depending on complete vote discipline among the coalition party members.

During negotiations, the HHP reportedly insisted on amendments giving paramilitary groups such as the Hanzai Rangers and the National Defence Corps a greater role in any future conscription system, including as educators and trainers within the national school system. When these demands were not met, the party opted to oppose the legislation citing the lack of representation for these paramilitary organizations, with which it has open ties.

"Who is it that is protecting our people from street criminals? Who is it that is taking the fight to the UPM and Kohsoomi separatists in the east?" shouted HHP leader Wichai Rattanakosin before declaring his vote. "It is the armed citizen organizations – the very organizations this government has turned against! Thus, our organization is honour bound to stand with our brothers-in-arms in the movement and oppose this illegitimate legislation."

Following the vote, the HHP’s sole cabinet member, Culture Minister Ditt Maleenon, announced her resignation, signalling a likely withdrawal of the party from the coalition government and Patriotic Alliance electoral bloc. This would reduce the coalition to a minority, raising the probability of an early election. Wichai, however, has previously dismissed calls for early polls as equivalent to “handing the country over to the radical Left,” thus leaving his current stance uncertain.

General Baroma expressed disappointment but reaffirmed the SNP’s commitment to national security. “This is a temporary setback,” he stated. “Our nation must remain prepared in the face of growing threats, and we will continue to work with all responsible parties to ensure that our young men are ready to serve when called.”

A statement from the Prime Minister's Office urged continued dialogue among all parties in the National Assembly. “Governance requires compromise,” the statement read. “Our government is committed to engaging with all partners to rebuild trust and find common ground on issues critical to the nation’s defense and unity.”

Opposition leaders, meanwhile, seized on the vote as evidence of the government’s fragility. Justice Party (JP) leader Kawin Kittisakchai criticized the coalition for attempting “authoritarian social engineering,” while Civic Alliance (CA) leader Anantaya Suthammarak stated that the failed vote “demonstrates why an early election is absolutely necessary.” Both leaders announced their intention to put forward legislation calling an early election at the next opportunity.
