Travel is about freedom. The freedom to explore history, culture, geography and the freedom to experience different ways of life. While LGBTQ+ travellers are welcomed in many countries throughout the world, they still face restrictions on their freedoms that other travellers may not experience.

Attitudes towards sexuality and gender expression vary widely across, and even within, borders. This makes it imperative that LGBTQ travellers are informed on local customs, social norms, and legal systems of the countries they intend to visit, as this will undeniably have a significant impact on the travel experience. This guide is intended to help travellers be informed about the safest and least safe countries for LGBTQ people to visit. The guide attempts to strike a balance between the rights of the local LGBTQIA+ community and the demands of queer vacationers. Nevertheless, we encourage prospective travellers to do their own research prior to making any travel plans.

Green destinations are countries in which LGBTQ+ travellers are welcome, and are unlikely to face any significant homophobia, transphobia, or other forms of discrimination. Domestically, LGBTQ+ people in this country face few, if any, legal barriers.

Yellow destinations are countries in which LGBTQ+ people, including travellers, may be subjected to social or legal discrimination not faced by heterosexual, cis-gendered locals. LGBTQ+ travellers should exercise a high degree of discretion and caution when visiting these destinations.

Red destinations should be avoided by LGBTQ+ travellers for non-essential travel, given the social and legal environment towards LGBTQ+ people in that country. LGBTQ+ travellers are likely to face significant homophobia, transphobia, and discrimination.
