Luthorian government officials have communicated their intent on restoring a Luthorian naval presence on the Migrants’ Pass, following decades of inactivity of Luthorian naval forces in this perimeter. The decision was made by Defence Secretary Peterson who earlier this day announced that Luthori was conducting negotiations over the restart of the 5642 agreement over basing rights in Sholemberg. 

Calling it a “necessary endeavour” for national security, the Defence Secretary argues that the Migrants’ Pass “constitutes a vital lifeline" for Luthorian commerce and economy and as such, should have at least a limited Luthorian naval presence to protect its interests.  

The Defence Secretary also stressed Luthorian involvement into MATO operations in the Migrants’ Pass as part of his reasoning in favour of increased involvement in the area, he stated that “currently MATO does a lot to ensure security and stability in numerous areas, we can’t let our allies do most of the heavy-lifting while we are merely standing on our own – although we do have the capabilities to help.” He moreover added “we are in a collective security alliance, that means we ought to do our part too.” 

Military officials have announced on 5-point policy on the return of Luthorian naval forces in the area – the first point involved the arrival of the HMS Excalibur and the HMS Stephenson at Sholemberg. The plan involves the constitution of the new “Southern Fleet” centred around Sholemberg. The new fleet shall complement the two current fleets currently in operations. For the Chief of the Naval Staff, this new effort in national defence constitutes a “great national endeavour”, but one that in his mind, will “bear fruits” in the long-term. 

“It’ll strengthen our capacity to respond to outside threats alongside our allies,” he argued. Foreign Dep’t officials have also argued in favour of the negotiation process, one staffer telling LBC: “It’s simple, Sholemberg and the restoration of Luthorian naval presence in the Migrants’ Pass, are an important part of the administration’s defence agenda. The Migrants’ Pass constitutes one of Luthori’s main trading routes and one of the necessary entries into other continents – hence our interest at lending a hand to our allies in that matter.” 

Defence Department officials have stated that the Luthorian government’s move was also due to a shift in the larger Luthorian defence strategy concerning the Eastern Dovani Seaboard. One that aims to assert “multilateral regional cooperation” on security matters in the medium term.  

“It is still an unrealistic prospect as of now,” a Defence Office spokesperson recognised. “But we remain optimistic, that in ten, or twenty or even thirty years – we'll be able to enter more thorough collaboration endeavours with other Dovanian states in the medium-term.” he concluded. 

Luthori’s renewed focus on the Migrants’ Pass does represent a shift in the balance of power in the region, although it is one that is agreed to beneficiate MATO more than anything, as the Luthorians enter the Migrants’ Pass in a “collaborative effort” to “alleviate the security burden on its allies,” a statement from the Department of Defence concluded.
