President Kob Will Not Seek Re-Election
The two-term president, first elected with a historic first-ballot victory, will not pursue a third term

Udon Nakhon – President Kob Suchinda has announced that he will not seek a third term ahead of the November 5646 election, in a statement released by the President's Office. In the statement, Kob thanked the Hansanese people for the trust they've placed in him for nearly 16 years, and for granting him "the greatest honour and duty of [his] life," serving as President. Kob will remain in office until the election of his successor next year.

Before entering politics, Kob led the Horizon Trade Group as a chief executive officer. His national profile rose dramatically following the 5628 Queen Daksinajar Girls' Secondary School fire, which claimed the lives of eight students, including Kob’s daughter. Kob subsequently gained a nationwide profile for his role in leading public protests and demonstrations against the NEWP-led government of Prime Minister Chandra Srirai and President Pichai Woraphon.

Kob entered the 5630 presidential election as an independent, running a campaign which consolidated the political centre-right and right-wing, having received endorsements from the United Conservative Front (UCF), the Hanzen Heritage Party (HHP), and several other conservative parties. His campaign emphasized anti-corruption and law-and-order initiatives, drawing emotive connections to the QDGSS fire and the broader neglect of the country, in his view, by the incumbent government. He subsequently won the presidency, becoming the first candidate since Surasak Darawan to secure a first-ballot majority.

Kob's election and first presidency oversaw a re-alignment of South Dovani politics toward the right under Prime Minister Prasert Thanomchai (UCF). Kob’s first presidency largely adhered to the ceremonial nature of the office and he was reticent to make policy proposals or set legislative agendas, characterizing himself more as a “tone setter” than a policy driver. However, following his re-election in 5638, in which he won on a second ballot in contrast to his first-term landslide, Kob became more active in legislative matters. In 5642, he signed landmark anti-crime legislation introducing the death penalty for drug-trafficking offences, personally working with the National Assembly to pass the law. The measure drew mixed reactions, with supporters praising decisive action while NGOs and opposition groups criticized its severity. Nevertheless, while campaigning and serving as the “law-and-order” president, both of his administrations were paradoxically marked by rising crime and insurgent violence.

Kob further broke with Prime Minister Prasert’s UCF-led government over the National Integrity Act, which he signed in February 5644 despite government opposition. Kob had supported the law, as he had long framed anti-corruption as a central pillar of his presidency. Economic growth during his first presidency was fuelled by the NERI privatization program, though the subsequent NERI Files corruption scandal would define his second term. The publication of the NERI Files by OpenLedger unexpectedly brought the new law to the forefront, as it authorized the Supreme Court to dissolve parties and remove assembly members implicated in corruption. Accordingly, the Supreme Court ordered the dissolution of the New Elephant Worker’s Party (NEWP) and the Party of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (PIE), vacating roughly one-sixth of all seats in the National Assembly.

This precipitated a prolonged and ongoing political crisis, exacerbated by Prime Minister Prasert Thanomchai’s death earlier this year. The National Assembly has been unable to appoint a new prime minister and cabinet, while the opposition has consistently demanded early elections. In March, Kob controversially vetoed a narrowly passed motion to dissolve the legislature, arguing that elections without a caretaker government would further destabilize the country. Critics countered that the veto served to block a likely Justice Party (JP) landslide, as has been consistently predicted in polls for nearly two years. Kob’s approval ratings, in the high 20s to low 30s, made re-election unlikely, suggesting his withdrawal reflects a choice to avoid defeat rather than a voluntary retirement.

In April, opposition parties formed the “Democratic Hansan” electoral alliance to unite behind a single candidate pledging to dissolve the National Assembly and call early elections. The Democratic Hansan primary remains a three-way race between former Agriculture Minister and National Development Party (NDP) leader Napat Chansiri, economist and professor Anong Sereevattanakul (CA), and former Udon Nakhon governor Kittisak Phromphat (JP), with results expected next month, exactly one year before the 5646 presidential election. Meanwhile, no clear right-wing successor to Kob has yet emerged, though analysts and observers have frequently mentioned Sports Minister Pira Khadpo (HP), businessman Arthit Tancharoen, and Major General Narisorn “Rit” Thanomchai, the eldest son of the late Prime Minister Prasert Thanomchai, as leading contenders.
