Reform-Labor secure outright majority

The first time in a long while a majority government will be formed

Rechtenburg – In what initially appeared to be a political gamble, the Reform–Labor Coalition has won the election with an outright majority of 176 seats, allowing Katt Wells to form a majority Reform–Labor government and become the next Prime Minister of Mordusia. She is expected to visit the Governor-General tomorrow, where she will likely receive His Majesty the King’s approval—through the Governor-General—to form a government in His name.

Mrs Wells has stated that her new government will focus on continuing many of the policies of her predecessor, while placing greater emphasis on social services and ending what she described as “unfair treatment.” As an example, she referred to “the horrible situation the New Englian population here had to go through.” She further stated that “workers deserve to be treated properly for their hard work.” In line with this, the new Labor prime minister announced that her government will work on introducing a federal minimum wage law.

It is relatively uncommon in Mordusian politics for a party to replace a leader—particularly one who is performing reasonably well in the polls and is the sitting prime minister. However, it has long been known that the internal balance within the Reform–Labor Coalition has been gradually shifting in favor of Labor. Labor’s caucus performed strongly and now holds more influence within the coalition than ever before.

At the Coalition’s congress prior to the election, it was announced that the sitting one-term prime minister, John Harrison (Reform), would not lead the coalition into the election. Instead, he was replaced by Katt Wells (Labor) as the coalition’s leader during the campaign.

John Harrison had led the Reform–Labor Coalition through two previous elections. In his first election, in 5703, he managed to increase the coalition’s seat share but finished second behind the National Party, which subsequently formed a minority government supported by several minor parties. In 5708, Harrison again led the coalition in what became a heated contest with the National Party for the largest share of seats. Both parties ultimately won 164 seats each, largely at the expense of the minor parties. After securing the support of the Wildlife Party and the Parti Voisainaise, Harrison was able to form a minority government.
