Udon Nakhon – President Anong Sereevattanakul has issued a dissolution order for the National Assembly, setting the stage for an election to be held within two months. This is pursuant to a constitutional provision which allows the president to unilaterally dissolve the legislature if a government commanding the confidence of the National Assembly cannot be formed.
The move fulfills a central campaign promise of President Anong and addresses a long-standing demand from the opposition for early elections. South Dovani has been embroiled in a political crisis for nearly two years as the current legislature has struggled to operate effectively following a Supreme Court’s order which dissolved two parties and vacated one-sixth of the National Assembly's seats, and compounded by the death of Prime Minister Prasert Thanomchai.
Remaining government parties have signaled their intention to contest the dissolution order, arguing it may not be constitutional in light of the ongoing state of emergency declared under Anong's predecessor, Kob Suchinda, and citing the absence of an officially appointed caretaker government to oversee the transition. Embattled Justice Minister Narongrit Gason (UCF) has filed a request with the Supreme Court to review and possible issue a stay on the dissolution order, citing the aforementioned concerns as well as the ongoing appeal before the court by representatives of the dissolved parties.
