Green liberals on the rise, as the SPP faces disappointing results across the nation

GEMUN: The nationwide local elections held across the cities, counties and provinces of Bianjie are called "midterms" for a reason, as the government's five-year term is subjugated to a test right in the middle of the governance, and many governments have been a subject to the losses or gains, sweet or sour, shocking or expected. For many, local elections have became a platform to kickstart or softlauch their new political projects, candidacies and more. This local elections cycle continued that tradition, after serving as a test drive for the rising in popularity Tomorrow Alliance for Bianjie, consisiting of the former members of both the pan-socialist and pan-democratic parties across the aisle.

Coming into this election, TAB was serious about winning in a number of urban places, especially focusing on the biggest of them all, the Gemun metropolitan area, including the Gemun proper. As the Tomorrow Alliance is not formally a political party, the bet was to join forces with the existing political parties, to run as a joint list. After days of informal behind-the-stage negotitations, leaders of the Horizon and Tomorrow Alliance have announced an electoral coalition that would be running in a bunch of places nationwide, including Gemun, with the founding member of TAB, and former Gemun deputy mayor, Yumei Zhang, being chosen to lead the list, and thus being the TAB-HOR candidate for mayor's office. "We need to turn the page, and lead a movement that will not be purple or blue, but will be colourless, because this is a city of everyone", said Zhang during the presentation of the list.

SPP, who is a comfortable position nationally, with their impressive majority in the Khanate Yuan, leading the third Tan government, was not so determined to succeed locally, as the party representatives in the administrative units are facing the growing opposition due to corruption charges, conflicts with the traditional allies on the left, and general fatigue from the purple domination of politics. TAB rising in the polling, stealing the youth and disappointed SPP voters, according to the ISUG polling, did not help either. Meiyun Lin, long-time ally of the premier Tan, and chief of staff of her office, has been the mastermind behind the campaigning, and for many observers, the outcome of the local elections would determine her future within Tan surroundings, as the head of the government would be looking for a scapegoat.

And so, the stage is set, and the central day of the local elections has passed, with polls closing, and first results released showing a disappointing finish for SPP nationwide. The ruling party would be keeping the majority of its representatives nationwide, but would be either losing, or coming close to lose many vital locations, including the one that socialists have been worrying the most about, Gemun. According to the preliminary results, SPP was on track to come second in the nation's capital city, while the joint Tomorrow Alliance and Horizon list was projected to become the largest party in Gemun's Metropolitan Assembly (GMA). After most ballots have been counted, the projection was confirmed, as TAB-HOR list came on top with 31% of the vote, while SPP trailed behind, with just 28%, compared to 42% just five years ago. Incumbent mayor, Alin Kongkeri (SPP) have conceeded, commenting on the disappointing loss: "We accept this result as a signal from the people, that we must change. And make this my promise, we will change."

Meanwhile, mayor-elect Zhang (TAB+HOR), celebrating the victory alongside the list's campaign chair, and de facto TAB leader, Heshen Aisin Gioro, Horizon leader, Kenje Migiya, and other members of the list, have thanked the voters for the trust in the "young and green" list. "Today, the real change begins, as we begin a new chapter in our city's history, and not choosing sides, but going forward", she said. According the Aisin Gioro, the list in the GMA "is open to cooperate with everyone".

Nationwide, members affiliated with TAB had a succesful night, as green liberals were elected across the nation, upsetting the members on both the right and the left, paving the way for the stronger 5723 campaign, with the new question rising, whether the TAB would finally transform into a proper party, or rather side with Horizon, and finally become an official political force, that is able to compete politically with both the SPP and DPP. Aisin Gioro have avoided the question, only saying that the group is "discussing its political future extensively".
