Baatrynsentii - The Battle of a Century, Clash of the Autocrats, War of the Sexes. The current political situation in New Verham has been described by many names. With the election of Nekhii Anarba, brother to former President Yeke Anarba, a new reality has dawned upon the suprisingly stable political scene in the country.
The Anarba family has been controversial in New Verham. Yeke Anarba is considered one of the most consequential figures in New Verham, being responsible for ending the political dominance of the People's Action Party and being controversial for his attempts at autocracy in the years after his imploding. But despite the controversial nature of his tenure, his own party the People's Progressive Congress, has continued to enjoy a relatively stable and fanatic base of support from the coastal regions in the country.
Following the landslide electoral victory by the Party of the People the PPC even became the largest oppossition party, even if it still fell way behind the ruling AN. The AN itself has been founded and led by the Strauß family, another important political family in the country. Nekhii has had a long political career next to that of his brother, serving as mayor of Altaai for nearly a decade before becoming Governor of the Altaai Province after that. Now, as party president and leader, he will be heading the PPC into the next general elections scheduled to be held in two years time.
Two political dynasties will thus be seen battling one another, with the Anarba family and the PPC in general criticizing the AN government for the selling of state assets and the "lack of state support" for disadvantaged communities. The AN meanwhile continues to warn of the PPC its history, reminding the electorate that under another Anarba the country might suffer from years of instability once more.
Despite the entry of Nekhii onto the national stage, the AN of Prime Minister Strauß still tops the polls, with nearly 58% of the electorate indicating they would vote for her party. A rebouncing economy, effective foreign policy and stable domestic political scene are the main reasons for the party its popularity. The PPC retains its second place in similar polling, although far behind the Strauß led AN.
