 PARTY CHAIRMAN ELECTED FOR KDP

After the resignation of party Founder and chairwoman Stagakes, there was enough speculation about whether Dep. Chairman and former minister Georgios Karassos, was able to lead the party forward as a provisional chairman. After many long sessions of the party's commitee there where 2 possible solutions on the succession of mrs. Stagakes. Either there was a party election from all the members of the party or Deputy Chairman Karassos would be promoted to the Chairman position. The party's executive commitee decided unanimously that it was in the party's best interest for mr. Karassos promotion as an election with tensions rising in the country, could end up causing strife and factioneering inside the KDP itself. Mr. Karassos himself decided to lead the KDP and appeared as a universally accepted figure as both his potential "opponents" in the struggle would have been mrs. Iris Laimou, an extreme Stagakes supporter, and technocrat Alexios Papapas (also former minister of Science). Both of them supported and congratulated publicly the new chairman, and wished that KDP flourishes under his leadership. Karassos, 48, is a former trade and maritime trade lawyer , has served as Minister of Trade, Industry and Tourism and is considered to be a more "traditional conservative" than Stagakes, less popular but more leaning towards state security, secularism and centralized government which is already a core axis for the KDP.
