Sarropoulos President, Karaliades First Minister in Coalition Deal

Vidalelis withdraws from runoff after leading first round; Reshuffle sees Xhanari take Interior Ministry

26 May 5739 – The runoff of the much anticipated snap presidential election has become a formality for Phalanx candidate and former Minister of National Defence Panteleimon Sarropoulos after the withdrawal of businessman and Citizens' Movement leader Stavros Vidalelis. Despite Vidalelis leading after the first round of voting, the coalition parties announced an agreement to prevent a 'divisive and chaotic' second round contest between Sarropoulos and Vidalelis.

In exchange for Vidalelis's withdrawal, the position of First Minister has been handed to the Interior Minister, Marios Karaliades, while Phalanx party leader Andromahi Moridi claims the Environment Ministry and the position of Second Minister. Karaliades will be acting President until Sarropoulos's investiture. Previosu Environment Minister Zoi Antoniou moves to Science, Technology and Development - while Dragon Xhanari, Vidalelis's running mate, receives a major promotion to the position of Minister of the Interior. A variety of deputy ministers have also been reshuffled within the Citizens' Movement's controlled departments.

Vidalelis received 30.0% of the vote in the first round, above Sarropolous's 19.1%. Still, a mixture of previous and ad hoc coalition expectations and negotiations made the Citizens' Movement's leader step aside after his second attempt at the presidency. Now he has been announced as the new Principal Advisor to the First Minister.

Former President Markos Kastrinos attempted to return to office after his impeachment, but came third with 15.7% of the vote, becoming locked out of the second round. He retained support among his northern, urban base but fell below the broad support of Phalanx and the Siphinan-fuelled power of the Citizens' Movement. 

With the government and presidency now aligned, it seems that the opposition parties will have to wait four more years before they will have another shot at the presidency. Other opposition candidacies like the KDP's Karassos and the UKP's Nikolaidas received significant votes but struggled to stand out from one another and prevent an all-government runoff scenario. Meanwhile, the scandal-plagued Dýnamis slumped to 2.6% of the vote, and the Kastrinos-aligned Kalopian Winter and Liberty parties took small but crucial shares of the vote away from the Flexibility party's candidate. If opposition parties had united from the start, it is possible they could have forced another Kastrinos-Vidalelis race, which would undoubtedly be as close as the last one.

With Vidalelis opting for a powerful, but lower profile position in the First Minister's office, while Marios Karaliades and Dragon Xhanari appear to be increasing in influence and power, there is growing suggestion that the Citizens' Movement could look at an internal rearrangement and potentially new leadership, but Vidalelis has yet to announce anything publicly. A poll of members suggests that Xhanari would be the party faithful's choice in any contest.
