KIVONIA: Following the June 5741 snap elections on June 4th, in which the Socialdemokratiska-Ekologiska Partiet scored their worst election to date, backsliding by 5 percent from the previous election, long-time Party Chairman and former Rikspremier Lars Sjöberg announced his resignation as Party Chairman and his retirement from politics the following day. Over the course of his political career, Sjöberg served as Rikspremier (5735 - 5736), Vice Rikspremier (5737 - 5741), Minister of Finance (5737 - 5741), and Minister of Justice (5741). Arne Fältskog, the SDEP's Treasurer and former Minister of Finance (5735 - 5736), as well as Thea Olofsson, the Minister of Foreign Affairs (5735 - 5736, 5737 - 5741) and former Vice Rikspremier (5736), have announced their resignations shortly after Sjöberg's retirement. Though, officially, all resigned due to electoral disappointment (and Olofsson due to her age), these resignations follow a years-long struggle over the direction of the SDEP between Sjöberg and Nyström. It is rumored that the Nyströmites won this struggle after prominent Nyströmites, such as Mattias Johansson, threatened to challenge Sjöberg for leadership.
Subsequent to these resignations, a leadership contest has been held for the now-vacant positions. In another major victory for the Nyströmites, Johansson, the former Vice Rikspresident (5735 - 5736), Minister of Justice (5736), and Minister of Environment and Sustainability (5737 - 5741), won the party chairmanship election unopposed, alongside fellow Nyströmites Alva Eriksson, the new Vice-Party Chairman, and Malte Malmberg as Treasurer. This new leadership team is significantly younger, them being in their late 20s and 30s, and promises to bring a more dynamic SDEP that can overcome future challenges for the party and the nation.
Subsequent to the party convention, the SDEP announced its exit from the National Unity government led by Knudson (HKP) by the beginning of July, citing the national unity government's fulfillment of its duty to pass the constitutional amendments, both democraticizing and stabilizing Davostag. The resignations of the SDEP ministers are widely seen as a protest against Rikspremier Knudson's rumored efforts to form a new government with the BF-FP and to restrict labor protections in that coalition agreement.

REINHARDT PALACE: In the meantime, Rikspräsident Nyström has invited Knudson to form a government, according to his mandate as Rikspräsident, though he is whispered to have voiced frustration about the government-to-be's plans to restrict employee representation and to continue the privatization push surrounding railways and train operating companies.
