Former Premier, now Private Citizen Georgia Van Wyck announces resignation on KRTN-2
In what has been described by analysts as a "house cleaning" Georgia Van Wyck and her entire Shadow Ministry has announced their resignation from Leadership posts in the Socialist Party of Kalistan. Premier Van Wyck issued a brief statement to the effect on KRTN-2 last night.
"The President of the Republic and I simply did not see eye to eye on very important matters. I can no longer, in good conscience continue in my post. I will not pursue the President's agenda for the Republic, and as a consequence, I will not be an effective leader of the Socialist Party. It is therefore decided that I shall step aside, to make room for another individual who is more willing to support the President's agenda for the Republic. My resignation shall be immediate." Her resignation was followed immediately by 12 additional statements from the SP's sitting Shadow Ministers which mirrored the language of the Premier's.
There are rumors from inside the Party that the resignation was not Van Wyck's idea. Inside sources said that the President called a meeting of the Party's Leadership, who visibly offered him no support during the Elections. The President asked the Premier to recall the militia, and insisted that peace was a better way to resolve the country's problems than war. The Speaker reportedly disagreed, and the President informed her that he believed that she lacked the support of the rank and file of the Party. This belief is supported by recent right-way/wrong-way polls among Socialists which demonstrate that Socialist Voters opposed any civil war by 12.3 percent. The source said the Speaker refused to relent, and the President insisted. Upon receiving a third negative response, the President demanded the resignation of the ministers. "It was a tense moment," the anonymous source said on the record, "But the Speaker blinked and consented to resignation over being forced out from office in disgrace, which would have caused an internal split within the Party."
The SP will reportedly hold internal elections for new Shadow Officers this month. With the resignations, the political career of one of Kalistan's most combative Premiers in recent history comes to an end.
