Museum of the People’s Republic opens in Kiego

After two years of preparation, the Museum of the People’s Republic opened its doors to the public today in Kiego. With support from several private and international donors, the museum aims to provide a comprehensive account of the People's Republic of Ntoto, the socialist state that governed the country from the late 49th century. The opening of the museum has attracted significant attention among the public and from several politicians. Despite being an important period of the country’s history, the People’s Republic has a highly contested legacy domestically and internationally.

Ntoto’s socialist government came to power following a period of intense violence and disorder. Following a series of violent clashes between the government of Nzinga Ogoo and pro-democracy protesters, the country descended into disarray. Kiego was the scene of widespread rioting that led to hundreds of deaths. In this context, socialist militia groups activated to attempt to bring an end to the authority of then-President Ogoo.

After several years of conflict, a collection of socialist armed groups led by Birom Ouattara established complete control of Ntoto in 4888. In the following decade, the socialist government undertook a programme of nationalisation and collectivisation that had a lasting impact. According to contemporary reporting, these policies were enforced using brutal means in many parts of the country. At the same time, they supported a rapid increase in Ntoto’s living standards by numerous measures.

Across three floors, the museum presents an account of all aspects of life under the People’s Republic. The economic and social impacts of the socialist government’s policies are central to the museum. Daily life during the period is examined too. The socialist government exerted control over almost all aspects of society, including the arts, business, leisure, and sport. Through a combination of first hand testimony and historical sources, the museum attempts to present a balanced account the experience of the Ntotoan population at this time.
