Notorious militia leader Namiri Jackson arrested in Nkada

In an official statement issued this afternoon, the government of Ntoto has announced the arrest of militia leader Namiri Jackson in the northeastern town of Nkada. Jackson was reportedly apprehended as part of complex military operation conducted overnight. According to official sources, five people were killed in the operation and a member of the Ntoto Defence Force sustained minor injuries.

Jackson is the leader of the infamous Bonde-Okda Liberation and Defence Council (BOLDC). Formed over three decades ago, the group originated as a community militia with the stated purpose of defending residents of the region from intercommunal violence. Since then it has seized control of a large area in the northern portion of Bonde-Okda. Though information on the group is difficult to verify, Jackson is reported to have taken de facto control in 5572 following the killing of his brother Kokolo.

In the international press, Jackson has become notorious for the brutal nature of his rule. Prior to his arrest overnight, he had been wanted for war crimes, including the use of child soldiers. Jackson would order extreme retaliation against civilians deemed to be disloyal. According to unconfirmed accounts, he would order the massacre of the entire adult population of a village and the child population conscripted into his militia.

Jackson’s arrest is part of a series of targeted military operations by the government of Ntoto. Since acceding to the presidency last year, Kembo Umoja has directed a significant increase in funding to the armed forces in an effort to re-establish control of the northeastern region of the country. For the past fifty years, the area has been devastated by a series of protracted armed conflicts involving dozens of diverse militia groups.

Umoja’s efforts to restore central government control over the region have been mostly successful. After years of stalemate, the Ntoto Defence Force has achieved a series of important victories in the past six months. Despite the success, the recent campaign has attracted controversy domestically and internationally. Increased expenditure on the military has meant a reduction in public spending in other areas such as healthcare, which critics say has contributed to an increase in malaria deaths.
