The Dual Republic in the current century

As announced in the “launch-post” of the new “Bannerhafen Nachrichten” now a mainly online news portal we have managed to get Professor Zuckerhans, a renowned scholar working at the university of Merenbürg. In this comment, he will introduce us into the current state of the eco-social and geopolitical landscape of the Dual Republic of Narikaton and Darnussia. A worthy start into a new age of Dual republican journalism.

Political Situation
After a stagnant coalition between the SDP a surprisingly successful splinter group of the Democratic Republican Party (Liberal) and the conservative United People’s Party (UDP/Dundorfian: VVP), the situation has basically returned to what some would consider the ‘norm’ state of party politics in Narikaton & Darnussia. A triumphant VVP holds something close to a supermajority and the presidency with Robert Kommenda, a more hawkish party member, at the current government's helm. The SDP has lost its momentum due to the “sellout” move of working together with anti-Eimer politician Heinrich Karner. Karner himself has also been eliminated from the political lamplight as the VVP does usually not consider this sort of internal factionalism to be ‘productive.’ He has not managed to finish any of his announced projects nor the backlog from previous governments which has cost him dearly. So to answer the question we have asked last time we reported about this, no Karner’s gamble has not succeeded. It only served as a sign of whats potentially to come. The VVP has failed to stand the test of new forces inside the political spectrum, political pundits already started the countdown on the conservative party’s downfall while the liberal side of the Nationalrat is consolidating its power to finally execute the fatal blow against the ‘alledged’ party of corruption.

Economic Situation
An important reason for the developments in the political scene is the state of the economy, while the major projects championed by the VVP have managed to increase the purchase power of a large part of the population and uplift them from poverty into a somewhat livable position from which to consume from, there is still an enormous divide between rich and poor in the Dual Republic. The almost total absence of a social welfare state is costing the conservative forces political capital and the taste the people have gotten from the Social Welfare Compromise act, one of the few legislative projects actually passed by the past coalition, only acts as a catalyst for discontent. While the GDP grows, so does the divide between rich and poor.
Another situation has been developing in recent months, the cost of groceries has shot up in the air due to an underdeveloped domestic agricultural sector. Some argue that the huge trading network the Dual Republic strongly influences would offer these missing goods, but due to wider economic circumstances the selling of these products isn’t as profitable as other avenues, as such this is slowly becoming an issue for the lower classes and even the middle classes which are starting to vent their anger at their local VVP district official (which is usually their mayor). Kommenda has done nothing to decrease the anger against conservative governance, instead he is busy negotiating with Pan-Dundorfian partners.

Foreign Relations
As already mentioned, the Kommenda administration has been focussing on channels with their Pan-Dundorfian partners, especially a recently revitalized Dorvik. Its new government is more focused on continental affairs in comparison to the regime back in the days of signing the Free-trade-treaty. Bannerhafen has welcomed this new attitude and attended a meeting with both Dorvish and Dundorfian officials to consolidate efforts in the Pan-Dundorfian Cause. Minister of foreign affairs Matthijs Sleyster revealed that there are talks about holding the next Dundorfian Cultural Festival in Dorvik as well as trying to increase the trade-volumina and interconnectness in the free-trade zone. Haldor in turn has proposed to work together in the expansion of the Black-Mountain-Chain railways, a infrastructure project which fits the profile of former Dual Republican endeavours as well, as such the Kommenda regime has signaled a positive response toward Dorvik and is ready to invest ressources into the efforts.
On other diplomatic fronts the status quo has been reaffirmed, the Dual Republic and Beiteynu are as close as ever and steadily (as well as silently) work to expand the 3rd Point which has turned into some sort of small security network by natural growth. Mainly amplified by Pontesi closing diplomatic gaps between the three players and working towards ascending to be a close ally within the Yishelhafen dominated region.
As a final note, we want to offer some insights into subtle talk and rumors going around regarding a more anti-socialist rhetoric within the political elite of Bannerhafen.
