President Kembo Umoja hospitalised with kidney failure
29 November 5609

Ntoto’s president Kembo Umoja has been admitted to hospital in Kiego. According to government sources, the president is experiencing kidney failure and his condition is “serious”. In recent weeks, the president has rarely been seen in public amid ongoing concerns about his health. Umoja’s daughter Mary issued a statement on behalf of the president’s family requesting that their privacy was respected at this difficult time.

Umoja has served as president of Ntoto for a quarter of century, winning five election victories across that period. In recent years, he has faced limited political opposition from within the country, and he won over 85 per cent of the popular vote in his most recent election victory earlier this year. Human rights defenders have raised repeated concerns about the treatment of journalists and opposition figures though.

As recently as February, it had been speculated that Umoja would step down from the presidency at the end of his previous term. In the past eighteen months, his son Ariel and his vice-president Henry Kasa have taken on many of the president’s everyday duties, including delivering policy speeches and attending local events.

If the president’s health worsens, it is likely to lead to political instability in Ntoto. The end of the country’s civil war in 5604 has been followed by five years of relative peace. Umoja’s unparalleled power and strong personal appeal have prevented any kind of political manoeuvring or upheaval. If this were to change, it might create a power vacuum as various individuals and factions jostle to replace him.
