Judicial independence bill passed in parliament – Chaos broke out after Fileleftheroi Leader accused government of wasteful spending and deemed judicial independence unnecessary

The government has introduced a new reform following the passage of a bill ensuring the full independence of the judiciary from governmental influence.

With 216 votes in favor from across all parliamentary parties out of a total of 300 MPs, the Ministry of Justice’s bill was approved. This legislation establishes a fully independent judicial system, creating new judicial bodies and services that will operate autonomously, in line with the government’s policy of national reconstruction.

The centerpiece of this reform is the establishment of “Αστραία”, the country’s new Supreme Court. Judges will be appointed by the Supreme Judicial Council, an independent body with full legal authority. The Ministry of Justice’s only involvement will be the allocation of the necessary annual funding and resources. Any further interference in judicial matters by the Ministry will be considered a felony and an act of treason against the people, punishable by imprisonment.

While the governing coalition supported the bill, Laïki Antistasi and the Fileleftheroi  voiced strong opposition, labeling the reform unnecessary and a waste of public funds.

Speech by the Leader of the Fileleftheroi:

Mr. President, esteemed Members of Parliament,

My political conscience does not allow me to support this so-called judicial independence bill, nor the excuses fabricated by the governing parties to push through legislation that not only undermines the existing judicial and prosecutorial institutions but also burdens taxpayers with unnecessary expenses under the pretext of modernizing the country.

No, ladies and gentlemen, we are neither fascists nor anarchists. We are the liberal voice of society, standing against the government’s deception and the left’s political theatrics at the people’s expense. You cannot just announce radical changes to the nation overnight. What is your plan? To base the country’s future on the Oikologoi, who somehow came second in the elections? Or perhaps on the Rizospastiki Neolea, who, from what we’ve seen, have no clear idea of what they are even doing in Parliament? Withdraw this bill immediately!

Following the Fileleftheroi leader’s speech, tensions erupted in Parliament, with the three governing parties fiercely responding, verbally dismantling the right-wing opposition.

Parliamentary Representative of Anipotakti Aristera:

“Mr. Petrovassilis, allow me to remind you that you come from the old establishment Libertarian party, which you now proudly claim to be a successor of. The same party that once dragged this country into war and economic ruin. Let the experienced and the progressive govern this country for once.”

Leader of the Oikologoi:

“Honorable opposition,

You are certainly fulfilling your parliamentary duty, but I must ask you to stop spreading falsehoods. Especially you, whose party has repeatedly violated the Constitution in the past and committed crimes against our nation. And yet, you accuse us of wasting public money simply because we want our country to respect the environment that sustains human life? 
Pathetic…”

Secretary-General of Rizospastiki Neolea:

From what I understand, the far-right opposition does not want to hear the voice of this country’s youth—the very youth that struggles daily to survive because of your policies and those of the Laïki Dexia government. Welcome to the future, gentlemen, where wisdom, knowledge, and justice lead the way.

The heated debate ended only after the President of Parliament intervened. The bill was subsequently passed with 216 votes in favor.

Following the vote, the President of the Republic expressed her satisfaction with Parliament’s contribution to the government’s ongoing efforts for national reconstruction, emphasizing that step-by-step reforms will bring lasting progress to the country.
