The long awaited investigation into Prime Minister Toivo Meri, is still in the works, but the opposition parties decided to take matters in their own hands and remove the Prime Minister through a Vote of No Confidence. After much debate the motion was put forward, and the debate in the Reiksaima commenced.
The Leader of the Opposition Bonaventūra Krauze slammed the Prime Minister calling him "demeaning in the office of Prime Minister", and she spoke on the floor of the Reiksaima, calling out the Government for "incredible deception and corruption". She said that "if any of you have a shred of decency, you would send a message to the Prime Minister, that the Reiksaima has no confidence in him!
The next to speak was Jaanus Jogi, who slammed the Prime Minister, saying that if he had done similar actions as Prime Minister, he would he resigned on the spot, in shame. He called the current Government, a "bastion of crookery", and said that "Meri should do the right thing, and start answering for his actions".
There were some in the Conservative ranks that were at first looking to back the motion, but as the night progressed, the Conservative ranks held firm behind the Prime Minister. The party as a whole has been shielded from the attacks, as there are many who have criticized the Prime Minister from that party, however with the party leadership, backing the embattled Prime Minister, and the rank and file doing so as well, the floodgates for attacking the Conservatives have now opened up.
The vote followed Party lines, with 2 Conservatives bucking the Prime Minister and voting no confidence. Bonaventūra Krauze called the actions of the Conservative backbenchers "a national disgrace", and made her exit from the chamber, in a red outfit, which has gone viral.
Toivo Meri has been silent on the topic, having a press conference today, congratulating the Dolgavan Queen on a charity goal she met earlier this week. He has been keeping press appearances to a minimum, and has only been available for media outlets that are friendly to him, and will not bring up his growing scandals.
For now the Prime Minister is holding onto power. The reason is simple, a sitting Prime Minister can be tried and prosecuted, but cannot go on trial while he/she is PM. The Conservative Party has no means to forcefully remove a party leader and Prime Minister from amongst their party, the only option was a Vote of No Confidence in the Reiksaima, and that has failed. Despite his popularity tanking, and his party on the verge of tanking, Meri is clinging to power.
