The Communist Party of Valruzia demands the approval of same-sex civil unions as an indispensable condition for not letting the government of Szymon Nowik fall.

The Communist Party of Valruzia (KPW) has decided to increase pressure on the current coalition government formed by Sovereign Valruzia and Dignity and Progress by demanding the approval of civil unions for same-sex couples to equal them with opposite-sex couples if they want to continue leading the national government.

From the mouth of its secretary general, current Marshall (head of government) of the Kampania region Tobiasz Bernas, the KPW has stated that this condition is a prerequisite for not dropping the current coalition government, either by filing its own motion of censure, by directly or indirectly supporting one filed by another parliamentary group or by withdrawing its votes for any proposed measure. Currently, the KPW has 130 seats and more than 20% of the votes in the last elections, being the third parliamentary force and holding the presidency of the Sejm, the parliamentary chamber.

In a tough debate in the Sejm, Mr. Bernas said that the government “cannot continue to turn its back on a part of its citizens who, after a harsh dictatorship, still see how they are not fully recognized by a government that claims to be democratic” and appealed to the very status of Chancellor Szymon Nowik, who is openly homosexual.

On the contrary, Nowik, who has already faced several demonstrations called by LGBT associations, already declared that he does not consider it a priority for “the first post-dictatorship government” but that does not mean it will not happen - alluding to a possible approval if he is re-elected after the next elections.

From the KPW they have stated that it makes no sense to wait any longer when it is now when the forces that in principle support LGBT rights - KPW, GiP and in part, Sovereign Valruzia - add up to a comfortable majority in the parliamentary chamber.

“We don't know what will happen in the next elections,”

Bernas said,

”what we do know is that we currently have more than enough votes for it, and we don't know if this will remain the case later on. Enough of political and electoral opportunism”.

The KPW justifies its support to this measure not only as a civil rights issue, but as a direct consequence of its commitment to social equality and the dismantling of all forms of oppression.

“True communism cannot coexist with legal structures that perpetuate discrimination. The liberation of the working class must include all people, regardless of sexual orientation,”

stated Ewa Kapaw, spokesperson for the parliamentary group.

Since its foundation, the KPW has promoted a radically egalitarian vision of society following scientific socialism and the party views the current legal framework — which denies same-sex couples legal recognition — as a modern form of bourgeois exclusion that reinforces structural inequality.

“Civil unions are not merely a moral issue — they are a material one: access to social security, housing, shared labor rights. Denying these rights means denying a portion of the working class access to fundamental resources. And that, for a communist, is unacceptable,”

Kapaw added.

In their public statement, the KPW emphasized that LGBT rights cannot be postponed for political convenience. They argue that a truly popular and progressive government must act decisively to dismantle the remnants of the previous dictatorial order.

Chancellor Nowik has so far refrained from commenting directly on the matter of the ultimatum, but internal government sources admit that KPW’s pressure could force the issue onto the legislative agenda in the coming months as not to risk the fragile majority that holds the government, although he seems clearly offended by the KPW's use of his own sexuality against him for political reasons, and has mentioned so in private to both President Pietrzyk and leader Bernas. For the KPW, the message is clear:

"This government has one year to propose a bill to the Sejm to be voted. If it is not done by then, we will no longer be able to support them. Sovereign Valruzia has to decide where they want to stand, and Dignity and Progress has to decide if they are truly a progressist party and who are its allies". 

The KPW knows that they also have a last-resort way to pass a similar bill, via a Presidential referendum to be triggered by President Karolina Pietrzyk. The government also knows that, and internal sources claim that Chancellor Nowik would prefer to avoid such a situation.
