Patriotic Alliance Leader Prasert Thanomchai Announces Minority Gov't Coalition Agreement

Patriotic Alliance leader Prasert Thanomchai has announced that he has secured an agreement with several centrist, centre-right, and right-wing opposition parties to form a minority coalition government. The announcement follows weeks of tense negotiations following the November 5631 general election, with the sixteen parties now represented in the National Assembly having failed to reach a consensus on forming a new government. 

The announcement comes just one week after President Kob Suchinda personally intervened in the deadlock, warning that if an agreement was not reached by the end of the month, he would dissolve the National Assembly and call for new elections. Prasert’s deal appears to have narrowly averted that outcome, though the resulting government will likely be far from stable.

Under the agreement, 73-year-old conservative stalwart Prasert will assume the role of Prime Minister, leading a cabinet composed of leaders and appointees from five junior coalition parties. However, as the coalition will govern without a parliamentary majority, it will depend upon the external supply and confidence of  three opposition parties: the national conservative Strong Nation Party (SNP), led by Gen. Baroma Thannajaro; the minority-rights based United Communities Party (UCP), led by Puran Pramoj; and the liberal Civic Alliance (CA), led by Kantayot Chanpakdee. 

This support has been secured through negotiated agreements with each of the three parties, in which Prasert’s government pledges to make a number of key concessions. To satisfy the SNP, the government has agreed to increase funding for the military and border patrols. In exchange for the UCP’s backing, it has promised formal recognition of minority language rights. Meanwhile, the CA’s support hinges on the creation of an independent anti-corruption watchdog agency.

Several high-profile cabinet appointments have also been announced. Vitaya Kongsangchai of the Party of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (PIE), who served as Finance Minister under the previous government, will return to that role. PIE leader Rak Khemanich will serve as both Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence. Napat Chansiri, leader of the National Development Party (NDP), has been named Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, while Wichai Rattanakosin, head of the far-right Hanzen Heritage Party (HHP), will serve as Minister of Interior.

Wichai’s appointment has already drawn criticism from liberal circles, who express concern about granting the Interior Ministry—and by extension, oversight of policing and internal security—to a party known for its proximity to Hanzai nationalism and ultranationalist militia groups. The cabinet has also been criticized for its lack of gender diversity, with only one woman appointed: the NDP’s Chonnanee Suprija, who will serve as Minister of Public Health.

Other notable appointments include Anawin Jantarapong, leader of the Homeland Party (HP), who will take over as Minister of Education, and Sutep Saenamuang of the National Union (NU), who has been named Minister of Labour. Additionally, Muay Hanzai champion and national icon Pira Khadpo has been appointed Minister of Tourism and Sports. Pira first entered politics in 5630 by campaigning for President Kob at rallies nationwide,  formally joining the moderate conservative HP shortly after its founding in 5630.

Prasert’s minority government agreement marks a historic shift in South Dovani’s political landscape as the country’s first conservative-led government since the fall of communism nearly sixty years ago, and the dominance of successive left-wing and centre-left coalitions since then. For supporters, it represents a long-overdue return to traditional values and national strength, while critics have raised concerns about the rollback of democratic reforms and civil liberties hard-won in the post-communist republican era.

The newspaper has historically been tied to the Hanzenese monarchy and generally adheres to a conservative political stance.
