The fallout of the election two days ago continues to spread with Prime Minister Chandra Srirai resigning the post she has held since 5619 after a disastrous election for the New Elephant Worker's Party. Chandra, who had been given two separate mandates to rule, first narrowly and in 5625 with a larger majority, now occupied the prime minister's estate as a lame duck, her party holding less than a fifth of the seats in the National Assembly and her erstwhile alliance with the PIE seemingly ended.
Speaking to a small collection of supporters in Udon Nakhon Chandra remarked on the successes of her administrations, most notably as participants in an active foreign policy unprecedented under revolutionary regimes. This focus on foreign policy has been the subject of some criticism for Chandra, whose efforts to open South Dovani to refugees were unpopular and whose domestic policy was often seen most as the domestic policy of the PIE. The invite-only crowd received Chandra well, but protestors outside the event bore signs criticizing the refugee policy, the money committed by the foreign ministry to international aid programs like the Romulo Fund, the administration's response to the QDGSS fire, and for perceived lack of commitment to the NERI, a sticking point in relations with the PIE and with Finance Minister Vitaya Kongsangchai in particular.
The resignation means a caretaker government led by erstwhile Foreign Minister Anong Chavalit as interrim prime minister will take over until a coalition government is found. The Patriotic Alliance comprised of the UCF and HHP has been given right of first refusal and is said to be hard at work looking to forge such a government out of the chaotic South Dovanian political landscape.
